It's life Jim, but not as we know it. True, that line above was never spoken in St:tos but it still holds water here. What if alien life was not little green men from Mars or Roswell Greys but something biologically more terrifying to look at? We have been long, long time fans of Fredrik Hana's work. The Norwegian filmmaker never ceases to amaze us and disturb our senses with their short film work. They are back with another film, their award-wnning 2022 short, From.Beyond. From.Beyond is an experimental short film consisting of different perspectives, referencing genres like science fiction, horror and found footage, a kaleidoscope vision portraying mankind's first meeting with alien life. What would be our first step in...

“No Me Sigas,” the directorial debut of “Anything’s Possible” writer Ximena García Lecuona, and “Malamuerte,” from Caye Casas, a rising star of pitch black Spanish comedy, both feature in a rich and far-ranging 2023 Blood Window Lab, the project platform of Ventana Sur’s genre forum, which unspools Nov. 27-Dec. 1.
The projects are joined by other buzz titles such as “Into the Spiral,” from Facundo Escudero Salinas, whose thriller, “Broken,” ranks as one of the top 10 most watched Argentine films of 2023.
Also anticipated is “Planet, billed as “a vast depiction of unprecedented worldwide alien contact, exploring different cultures and societal classes through their experiences with the phenomenon,” and directed by Fredrik S. Hana, a 2022 Meliès d’Or Award for “From.Beyond.”
The projects form part of 22 titles as submissions are up 20% this year on last, notes Javier Fernández, head of the Blood Window Program.

The Bucheon film festival’s Network of Asian Fantastic Films project market wrapped up three days of meetings and pitching sessions on Monday with a prize ceremony that disbursed cash, post-production support and invitations to related genre film events.
“The Passport,” a Tamil- and English-language Malaysian project about an Indian rockstar who is forced to confront cultural expectations and her interactions with an imaginary friend, won the headline Bucheon Award for director Ananth Subramanian and producer Bel Choo Mun. It was both a popular choice among other Naff participants and the unanimous decision of the jury.
The numerical winner was “Please Bear With Me,” which saw director Gabriela Serrano and producer Gale Osorio from the Philippines collect three prizes. The project is a sci-fi and social issues mash-up about a call center operative who gets paid in dream-time and uses it to relive her glory days as a pop star.

With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.

Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.
The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.

"Mesmerizing. You won't be able to shake it for days." Now what do we have here? What's hatching from that strange egg? There's a 60-second trailer for a new sci-fi short film premiering soon at the 2022 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal this summer. From Beyond is an extraterrestrial short film made by Norwegian filmmaker Fredrik S. Hana, with a running time of 14 minutes. There's some kind of alien creature involved, but exactly what it is is still a mystery. Here's the synopsis: "A kaleidoscopic vision portraying mankind's first meeting with alien life, told through faux archival footage combined with practical FX, miniatures and old school in-camera trickery." Sounds good, I really want to see it. Already sold me with this brief glimpse. There's a great quote in this trailer describing it as "District 9 by the way of Ingmar Bergman." Well, okay. We'll keep an eye out for this, waiting...

Contact with extraterrestrial life forms would be an event of Earth-shattering, Belief-shattering proportions, and there sure is no shortage of films about the subject. From intelligent thought-pieces to epic monster flicks, we've seen plenty of first contacts and last contacts. So it's a bit surprising to see a short film kind of sum it all up into one 13-minute package. Yet that is exactly what From Beyond does. Norwegian writer-director Fredrik S. Hana is known here favourably for his surprisingly playful documentary Codename: Nagasaki , which our Shelagh Rowan-Legg reviewed last November. Here, he channels a much different vibe. Using a combination of found footage, news clips, ominous sound and some unclear but very effective creature (?) designs, he creates a mood piece which leaves...

Probably most of us have imagined our lives in a particular genre: sometimes we see ourselves living in a romantic comedy, other times we imagine ourselves as a noir detective, or a cowboy, or we think about how we might handle a situation in our lives if we could live is via a particular mode of storytelling. And if there's a particularly large situation or predicament, it's often something of a comfort to view it through a certain lens, to process perhaps unexpected information. Norwegian filmmaker Fredrik S. Hana has been making waves in genre film for several years with shorts and videos, so it came as surprise that his first feature would be a documentary. But the end result has a lot of Hana's...

Over the course of running things here at Twitch for nearly eleven years now I've had opportunity to come across a pretty solid collection of talents working in the short film world, talents blessed with a force of vision and directing voice clearly and truly their own whose names I tend to file away in a little unofficial list of 'People Who Will Probably Have A Hard Time Making A Feature But Will Make A Really Damn Awesome One When They Do'. Norway's Fredrik Hana has been on that list pretty much from the first time I ever came across him.Gifted with enormous technical talents and a mind that presses him into strange and unusual directions, Hana is one of a kind - his work...

We've been keeping an eye on Norway's Fredrik Hana in these parts for quite some time now. We first wrote about his work back in 2009 with his short film Transsexual Express and checked back in in 2011 with time travel oddity Allfader before moving on to last year's Fantastic Fest selection, the appropriately titled Angst, Piss And Shit, which features plenty of all of the above. As you may guess from the titles, Hana is a bit of a restless sort, continuously reinventing himself from project to project and he has done so again with his latest short - the handsomely shot in black and white and very much classically composed Autumn Harvest. But this is no agrarian tale, no, there's something much darker...
