I understand the compulsion to find a fresh take on a classic tale. After all, you have the weight of literary history and beloved film adaptations to contend with, so a straight remake would be boring. But, when you tackle a Robin Hood tale, it has to be set in a plausible time and place, with characters that make sense.
The legend of Robin Hood dates back to the 13th or 14th century and in time grew in scope so it wasn’t just Robin versus the Sheriff of Nottingham, but came to encompass King John and the Crusades.
There are so many ballads and poems to draw from for inspiration that a nice, historically accurate film would have been welcome. Instead, Director Otto Bathurst and screenwriters Ben Chandler and David James Kelly went in entirely the other direction, creating a fantastical Medieval world that was visually stunning and entirely devoid of interest.

To state that Otto Bathursts’ reimagining of Robin Hood is a colossal failure would be to understate such a pathetic and lacklustre attempt at creating just whatever monstrosity this turned out to be in an excruciating two hour running time. That with just a reminiscent thought of having to experience such an event again brings a knott to my stomach.
For a film that has every asset at its disposal to create a thrilling and compelling piece of narrative Robin Hood begins and ends in the most cliched of fashions of literal fairytale bookending of a graphic novel, similar to that of the narrative of Shrek, a comparison i never thought i’d write. “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Creed II” are looking to have some of the most successful Thanksgiving turns of all time, edging the holiday weekend towards a potential new record.
Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” sequel should debut to an estimated $84.9 million for the five-day weekend from 4,017 locations, slotting in just behind 2013’s “Frozen,” with $93.5 million, for the best Thanksgiving opening of all time. It earned $21.7 million on Friday on its way to a forecasted $50.5 million three-day total.
“Ralph Breaks the Internet” just barely topped 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” which opened with $49 million over three days on its way to $189 million domestically and $471 million worldwide. John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman reprise their roles in the sequel, with newcomers Taraji P. Henson and Gal Gadot rounding out the cast.

Arriving just in time to win a place among the year’s worst films, Robin Hood — bursting with an entitled sense of its own non-existent coolness — falls flat on its fat one. It’s the umpteenth version of the heroic outlaw story, once more taking on the merry man that Kevin Costner played like a surfer dude in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and a glum Russell Crowe sucked the life out of in his 2010 downer. Still, this new Robin, played by Taron Egerton, is so bad he doesn’t...

“Forget history,” so says the new reboot of “Robin Hood” in the film’s opening narration. Although the critics reviewing “Robin Hood” weren’t so quick to forget previous installments of the legend, many hope to quickly erase this one.
The early reviews of “Robin Hood,” starring Taron Egerton (“Kingsman”) and Jamie Foxx in the action-adventure film opening Wednesday, have pegged Otto Bathurst’s (“Peaky Blinders”) film as a lazy retread of “Batman Begins” that borrows the worst traits from Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur” flop and the over-stylized action sequences of “300.”
“Rife with stereotypes, a terrible script, and odd ‘300’-esque cinematography that just doesn’t fit, this is not only a film nobody asked for, but also one that nobody should be forced to endure,” TheWrap’s Yolanda Machado says in her review.

In the opening sequence of the latest big-screen “Robin Hood,” Lady Marian breaks into Robin’s barn to steal a horse. Carefully pacing her steps, Marian is covered in a hood, with a scarf covering half of her face and a dress that covers her up entirely — except for her chest, due to a very deep, low-cut front that has no purpose other than to show off some cleavage.
But objectifying the only woman in the cast with a speaking role isn’t the only crime “Robin Hood” commits. Rife with stereotypes, a terrible script, and odd “300”-esque cinematography that just doesn’t fit, this is not only a film nobody asked for, but also one that nobody should be forced to endure.
The story is not new; it’s essentially the same one most of us have grown up with, thanks either to the animated Disney film, the Kevin Costner “Everything I Do” version,...

This year has seen a (small) handful of movies as bad as Otto Bathurst’s revisionist new “Robin Hood,” but none of them — not “Mile 22” nor “The Happytime Murders” nor even Dinesh D’Souza’s “Death of a Nation” — have been more in denial of their own badness. If nothing else, this accidentally hilarious, goofy train wreck of an origin story most definitely has the courage of its convictions. Alas, the film isn’t smart enough to recognize that its convictions are dumb, and it doesn’t have the goods to back them up in the first place.

Taron Egerton is ready to steal from the rich as Robin Hood in the first trailer for Lionsgate’s upcoming movie “Robin Hood.”
“You were a lord, but now you get to become a thief, and I’m going to show you how,” he’s told by Jamie Foxx, who plays Little John.
Egerton’s character asks, “When do I actually get to, you know, steal?”
Egerton’s Robin Hood is a war-hardened crusader, while Foxx portrays a Moorish commander mounting a revolt against the corrupt English crown. The trailer, released on Tuesday, shows a gritty, violent version of England with plenty of swordplay and archery.
Eve Hewson stars as Maid Marian. “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Jamie Dornan will portray Will Scarlett — Robin Hood’s half-brother — and a snarling Ben Mendelsohn plays the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Lionsgate has released the official trailer for Summit Entertainment’s Robin Hood, its updated take on the legendary bandit of Sherwood Forest that stars Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn and Eve Hewson.
From this look, the film directed by Peaky Blinders helmer Otto Bathurst dives head-first into the “steals from the rich” part of the tale with a heist/buddy-movie vibe after Robin of Loxley (Egerton), war-hardened from fighting in the Crusades, comes back home to find it rife with corruption and evil personified by the Sheriff of Nottingham (Mendelsohn).
Spurred and trained by his Moorish commander Little John (Foxx) — “You were a lord, but now you get to become a thief, and I’m going to show you how,” he tells Robin — they form a band of outlaws and plan an epic heist of the royal treasury in a revolt against the corrupt British crown.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Steven Spielberg are currently in early talks to reunite on a blockbuster biopic of Ulysses S. Grant for Lionsgate.
The film would be adapted from the Ron Chernow biography after Lionsgate and Appian Way acquired movie rights to Grant towards the end of 2017. Spielberg is said to be more than keen to direct DiCaprio in the biopic which is being adapted by David James Kelly. This would mean it’s the first time DiCaprio and Spielberg have worked together since 2002’s Catch Me if You Can.
DiCaprio and Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson will be producing at Lionsgate.
Grant was one of the most complicated military leaders-turned politicians in American history. After resigning from the Army due to alcoholism, he had another turn under Abraham Lincoln, becoming his most trusted Army General. Grant led the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy under the supervision of Lincoln.

Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio are looking to team up on another film project together. They are in early discussions to join an epic biopic that will tell the story of Ulysses S. Grant. The movie will be based on the biography written by Ron Chernow, and it will be adapted by David James Kelly, who recently worked in the upcoming Robin Hood movie with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx.
Spielberg obviously still has some interest in exploring the Civil War. He did a fantastic job with his film Lincoln and I have no doubt that he and DiCaprio would make a solid movie about Grant. I hope this works out because it would be great to see these two talented individuals work together again. The last time they worked together was on the film Catch Me If You Can. Here's a description of the book that the movie will be based on:

Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio are in early talks to collaborate on a Ulysses S. Grant biopic at Lionsgate.
There’s no deal in place for Spielberg to direct, and Lionsgate had no comment on the report. The Grant project was set up last year at Lionsgate with DiCaprio and Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson producing a movie version of the Ron Chernow’s 2017 biography “Grant.”
Grant has been widely recognized as a superior military tactician for leading the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy during the Civil War under the supervision of President Abraham Lincoln, winning key battles at Shiloh and Vicksburg. He won two terms as President as a successor to Andrew Johnson and stabilized the economy along with attempting to remove the last vestiges of slavery, which included working to crush the Ku Klux Klan. Just last week, we brought you the news when it was reported that 20th Century Fox was looking to hire Joe Carnahan (The Grey) to helm their forthcoming Daredevil reboot, which is being penned by David James Kelly, who is reportedly adapting Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Born Again storyline for the film.
Within that story, there was also a rumor about Marvel Studios and Fox working on a trade-off, which would give Fox more time to make Daredevil (because the studio’s rights expire in October) in exchange for returning some of it’s character’s movie rights back to Marvel. Last month, we brought you the news when director David Slade exited the director’s chair on 20th Century Fox‘s forthcoming reboot of Daredevil, being penned by David James Kelly, who is reportedly adapting Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s comic storyline Born Again for the film.
Now, Variety reports that the studio is looking to hire Joe Carnahan (The Grey) to helm the project, and seems to be in a hurry to get filming underway, as the studio’s rights to the character expire on October 10th of this year and revert back to Marvel if they aren’t in production.
Rumor has it that Marvel and Fox are working on something of a trade-off, which would give Fox more time to make Daredevil in exchange for returning some of it’s character’s movie rights back to Marvel. The trade say that characters being mentioned are Galactus...

Even without Daredevil's super-enhanced senses, it's reasonable to conclude that 20th Century Fox's planned reboot of the franchise is a slow-developing idea, rather like Fantastic Four and Deadpool.
That's unless we start to hear any fresh updates during San Diego Comic-Con or as part of the press interviews for other Fox releases.
David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) is the man tasked with directing the reboot of Marvel's blind lawyer turned crimefighter.
And he caused a stir on Twitter last week when he appeared to confirm Josh Hartnett was set to star as the new Daredevil.
A Twitter follower had suggested that "I hope David Slade gets back to the Daredevil stuff soon and I hope maybe Josh Hartnett could finally get a Marvel role" and Slade responded with "You and me both."

A Twitter exchange between David Slade and a fan has led to speculation as to who could end up playing Daredevil in his upcoming reboot. Empire was able to take a screenshot of the conversation and you can view it below.
It’s more than likely that Slade was talking about the first part of the tweet as the director has been taking on other projects, leading fans to wonder if everything was going well with the movie. What we do know about it though is that it will be based on the Born Again storyline by Frank Miller and that David James Kelly is working on the screenplay.
That being said, Josh Hartnett and David Slade have worked together previously on 30 Days Of Night, which could imply that Slade wants to work with him again on Daredevil. Or, he could’ve simply agreed with the thought that Hartnett should...

About two years ago, we told you that 20th Century Fox was looking to develop a reboot of Daredevil, and David Scarpa (The Last Castle, The Day the Earth Stood Still) was hired to pen the script. About a year after that, the studio hired director David Slade (Awake, Hannibal) to helm the reboot.
When Slade was brought on board, Scarpa’s previous script was jettisoned, and the studio and director were seeking seeking a writer to work closely with Slade. The following summer, Brad Caleb Kane (Fringe) was brought on to pen an adaptation of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s comic storyline Born Again for the film.
Now, Deadline reports that David James Kelly has been brought on board to do yet another rewrite of the Born Again adaptation, which sees The Kingpin uncovering the superhero’s secret identity, and turning Matt Murdoch’s life upside down.

Determined not to let Marvel own all the Marvel movies just because it created the characters or whatever, Fox is still pushing forward with X-Men sequels and even possible New Mutants spinoffs, and long-planned reboots for Fantastic Four and Daredevil, despite the lattermost 2003 Ben Affleck version marking the over-saturation point for comic-book movies for a while. Nevertheless, Fox is still so determined to try again and/or reprise that mutually assured destruction that it's hired yet another writer to draft its Daredevil reboot: David James Kelly, who will take over a project that's already passed through David ...

Well, it's not a casting announcement, but it's a start!
Fox's planned "Daredevil" reboot has slowed down a bit in recent months, with director David Slade going so far as to publicly state that "there is no update" on the project just yet. Well, now there is an update: according to Deadline, writer David James Kelly has been hired to take another pass at the "Daredevil" script.
It's long been reported that Slade's "Daredevil" reboot would take much of its cues from Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's "Born Again" story arc, wherein The Kingpin learns Daredevil's true identity and uses that information to cut to Matt Murdock's core. As it stands, that story seems in place, even with Kelly's impending rewrite.
Between the announcement of Kelly's hiring and Tom Rothman's recent confirmation that Josh Trank is developing "Fantastic Four" for the studio, it appears that Fox is going...

Deadline are reporting that 20th Century Fox’s ‘Daredevil’ reboot, which is to be directed by David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 30 Days Of Night, Hard Candy) has found itself a new writer in the form of David James Kelly.
He will re-write the original script from Fringe writer Brad Caleb Kane which director Slade last year called “amazing”. So hopefully the re-write is to bring down the budget or tighten the dialogue or something as it sounded like they had a sold story worked on.
The untitled reboot is supposedly going to follow the “Born Again” run of Daredevil comics which ran from issue #227-233, written by Frank Miller and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli. In this classic story arc Daredevil falls to insanity and poverty at the hands of the Kingpin, who after learning of Daredevil’s secret identity sets out on a path of destruction to ruin Matt Murdock’s life – slowly,...

... who? Let me explain: David James Kelly is the guy who as been hired to do a new draft of the Daredevil reboot, and while he does indeed have representation his only IMDb credit thus far is that of being a post-production assistant on Sunshine Cleaning. Which to be fair tells us nothing about his writing ability, as everyone trying to make it in Hollywood often has to work a job or two or six that has little to do with their main talents ("Party Down"...

The new Daredevil movie still seems quite a way away, as a fresh writer is brought in to take a stab at the script...
There had been rumblings over the past week or two that all was not well with the script for the planned reboot of Daredevil. And those rumblings may have been proven to be true.
The film, which is being developed by 20th Century Fox under the guidance of director David Slade, is seemingly getting a rewrite now, with the news that David James Kelly has been hired to take a fresh stab at the project.
According to Deadline, the planned basis for the storyline will be the Born Again arc, originally penned by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. In that arc, Matt Murdoch's secret and double life is uncovered by The Kingpin, and thus used against him.
There's no word yet on a timescale for the movie,...

Remember when Ben Affleck was Daredevil, the super-blind, super-reddish superhero? (No? It was only in 2003. But still no?) Okay, cool. There's a reboot coming, and two years after it found its writer, it has found its re-writer in David James Kelly, who hails straight from the storied post-production department of Amy Adams's Sunshine Cleaning (?). David Slade (30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) has been tapped to direct, and Guy Pearce is not interested.

Fox has been quietly developing a new Daredevil film for a couple of years now. 30 Days Of Night and Twilight: Eclipse director David Slade has been attached since last spring, and there have been screenplays by David Scarpa (The Day The Earth Stood Still) and Brad Caleb Kane (Brooklyn's Finest). Now though, there's word of yet another draft, this time by David James Kelly. The plan is still to adapt the Frank Miller saga Born Again, first published in Daredevil issues 227-233, in 1986. The story sees Matt Murdock outed as Daredevil by his former secretary Karen Page. She has, shall we say, fallen on hard times since leaving the Nelson & Murdock law firm, and sells the info for a shot of heroin. It eventually reaches crime boss The Kingpin, who proceeds to creatively dismantle Murdock's life and send supervillain Nuke into Murdock's stomping ground of New York's Hell's Kitchen. In the comic,...

Back in 2010, 20th Century Fox hired David Scarpa (The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Last Castle) to write the script for the studio's "Daredevil" remake. A year later, David Slade (30 Days of Night) was on board to direct. Since then, Slade updated his Twitter account with news that the film is moving forward. But a few days ago, he revealed that his focus has shifted to the upcoming "Hannibal" TV series, hinting that "Daredevil" may be dead. Then just recently, Fox CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that development is still moving forward. And now comes word that the studio has hired David James Kelly to re-write the script. The idea is to adapt Frank Miller's "Born Again" storyline, which ran in "Daredevil" #227-233 in 1986 and involves an intense personal attack on Matt Murdock's friends and family following Wilson Fisk (aka The Kingpin) learning his true identity.

David Slade's (30 Days of Night, Twilight: Eclipse) reboot of 20th Century Fox's Daredevil has found a new writer. Deadline reports that David James Kelly has been tapped to rewrite the script, his first big writing gig. The studio is reportedly basing the screenplay off of Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli's story arc Born Again, "as The Kingpin uncovers the superhero’s secret identity, and uses it to turn blind lawyer Matt Murdoch’s life upside down."
Fox has another cool superhero reboot in the works for Fantastic Four from Chronicle helmer Josh Trank. It will be interesting to see how a newcomer like David James Kelly brings a fresh perspective to the story. I am not sure if there is really a need to reboot Daredevil, but am interested to see how it turns out.

Last we heard on the topic of “30 Days of Night” director David Slade’s impending reboot of Fox’s “Daredevil”, a writer had turned in a script. Apparently it wasn’t a very good script, or the studio wasn’t very enamored with it, because Fox has since hired another writer to take yet another crack at the reboot. Scribe David James Kelly has been hired to rewrite a previous script by Brad Caleb Kane (“Fringe”), with the idea still being an adaptation of the Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli “Born Again” story arc in the “Daredevil” comic book from the ’80s. In “Born Again”, Daredevil’s archnemesis, the Kingpin finally uncovers the superhero’s civilian alter ego, crusading (and blind) attorney Matt Murdock. The bad guy, as bad guys are wont to do, uses that information to make the man without fear’s life, and the life of those around him,...

It has taken a little while for the Daredevil reboot to get going. First announced over a year ago, the project hired director David Slade to helm and then, a few months later, brought Fringe writer Brad Caleb Kane on-board to write the script. Apparently what has held the project in development is the script, and we know that now because 20th Century Fox has just brought on a writer to replace Kane. Deadline says that nearly five months after Kane was hired, the studio has now gotten David James Kelly to do a rewrite of Daredevil. The movie will actually be the first writing credit for Kelly, whose only previous work in the film industry includes being a post-production assistant on the 2008 indie dramedy Sunshine Cleaning. There have been reports that the new story will follow the "Born Again" arc created by Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli in which the...

The proposed live action Akira being developed over at Warner Bros. is slowly and steadily becoming the most talked-about film project of all time. The ups and downs of bringing this beloved story to the big screen have been well documented, but the most recent news made it look like this project might finally be ending its wild ride. Reports came in last week that all work on the film had been halted, the entire thing was being rethought, and maybe it could get scrapped indefinitely. But that was last week. This week, Variety is reporting that a new strategy for resuscitating director Jaume Collet-Serra’s project is being hatched. It sure didn’t take long to get the roller coaster going again. Last week’s reports said that the main reason for Akira being halted was that it needed to, yet again, go through some budget cuts. But according to a source that talked to Variety...
