Many teenagers and young adults in modern culture are embracing the ideals that are driving the political correctness that’s changing the way humanity as a whole is interacting with each other. That’s certainly the case for the sensitive and socially conscious millennials who make up the ensemble protagonist group in the upcoming horror movie, ‘Triggered.’ […]

You have to say one thing about the hapless characters in the new horror film directed by Alastair Orr (House on Willow Street, Indigenous): They at least know exactly what kind of movie they’re in. Turning homicidally on each other in the woods with bombs attached to their chests, they manage to throw in joking references to the Saw movies and John Wick, among other things. The problem is that these occasionally clever throwaway gags in Triggered mostly remind you of far better viewing experiences.

What should be a relaxing camping trip in the woods turns into a fight for survival for nine friends when they wake up with countdown bombs strapped to their chests—and cruel rules to keep them from blowing up—in the new movie Triggered. Ahead of the horror thriller's November 6th digital and VOD release from Samuel Goldwyn Films, we caught up with Triggered director/editor/executive producer Alastair Orr to discuss the movie's inception, filming mostly at night, making the vest bombs as believable as possible, and working with a dedicated cast and crew to create their explosive film.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Alastair, and congratulations on your new movie Triggered! When did you first read the screenplay by David D. Jones, and what made you want to bring this story to life on screen?
Alastair Orr: Thank you for checking out Triggered!

Friendships are put to the test when nine former classmates on a reunion camping trip awake to find they’re locked into explosive vests with countdown timers on them. The only way to get more time? Kill each other…
Sometimes it’s unfortunate for filmmakers that the cast they put together can be, ultimately, unlikeable in the eyes of the audience. However in some cases, especially in horror films, having an unlikeable cast actually adds an extra dimension to your movie. Case in point, Triggered.

A slice of high concept horror with nicely drawn characters, Triggered is the latest work by Alastair Orr, the man behind 2016 genre hit From A House On Willow Street. It makes use of some familiar tropes but draws them together into a story that stands up well in its own right, with tight pacing and explosive energy.
It begins with that old genre staple, a weekend trip to the woods, where a group of young people get together - some of them meeting for the first time since high school - and sit around a campfire to talk and drink. Exactly how they all came to be invited on this trip is a bit of a mystery, however, as they weren't all close friends. They don't have long in which to start figuring it out before gas starts drifting around their camp and they all pass out - only to.

Ahead of the UK premiere of Triggered, his cat-and-mouse slasher, Alastair Orr talks about being inspired by old console games and why he loves working in South Africa.
We last saw you at FrightFest with From A House On Willlow Street, how’s life been treating you since that time?
It’s been great. I got married, had a kid, got into massive amounts of debt with Bitcoin – I’ve made a lot of great life decisions since FrightFest 2016.
How did David D. Jones’ Triggered script end up in your capable hands?
I was working on a bigger film with David that we couldn’t raise the money for. So he pitched something way cheaper that we could do. It’s eleven characters in the woods, so it seemed super easy on the page, but was quite a nightmare to shoot.
Was the script really inspired by retro video games from the 1990s?...

It’s a wonder there are any kidnappings at all these days. After all, anyone who routinely watches genre movies knows that they never turn out well. Unfortunately for them, the hapless villains in the new horror film by Alastair Orr (Indigenous) apparently aren’t cinephiles, and they’ve made a serious mistake choosing their victim who resides at the titular abode in A House on Willow Street.

No Bad Deed Goes Unpunished at the ‘House on Willow Street’O. Henry’s “The Ransom of Red Chief” gets a devilish upgrade.
It’s not easy being a kidnapper. From a House on Willow Street is changing its name, again. This time, for the United States' Video-on-demand launch, this title is going back to its original title: House on Willow Street. From Alastair Orr (Rancid, 2011) and writers: Catherine Blackman and Jonathan Jordaan, this title involves a kidnapping and a demonic possession. "You should really let me go... Or you're all going to die tonight." IFC Midnight has released the official trailer for an indie horror film titled House on Willow Street, formerly From a House on Willow Street (the full title when it premiered at FrightFest last year). They soon find out they chose the wrong person to kidnap, as the girl is actually a demonic killer herself. Sharni Vinson stars, along with Carlyn Burchell, Steven Ward, Zino Ventura, and Gustav Gerdener. This film actually looks totally crazy and freaky and violent and everything. Prey, also known as Indigenous, follows a group of tourists as they travel to the paradise of Panama for their post-graduation vacation. After meeting a few locals, the five friends decide to check out a supposedly magical waterfall deep in the jungle, despite others warning them of the lurking indigenous Chupacabras. After their guide vanishes, the group soon find they have fallen prey to something stalking them in the jungle.
In this day and age of instant gratification, the fact that a movie has taken two years to finally see the light of day in the UK – especially given how fast non-theatrical titles hit VOD these days – is usually a bad omen. And that’s totally true of Prey; a film which wastes 25 minutes of its already short, less than 80 minutes,...

A particular sub-set of travel horror exists to scare people away from real-life attractions with no regard for whether any threat actually exists. Films such as The Ruins, Chernobyl Diaries, and As Above, So Below gladly exploit a Mayan temple, the long-abandoned city of Pripyat, Ukraine, and the Paris Catacombs, respectively, as forbidden sites harboring contained evils lying in wait for unsuspecting victims – nevermind that countless tourists have managed to visit these places without incident.
The latest victim of this trend is the Darién Gap, a dense rainforest region located between Panama and Colombia. The area has bedeviled explorers and Pan-American highway developers alike, who have all battled its inhospitable landscape to varying degrees of success. But if Indigenous, a monster movie set in the Darién Gap, has anything to say about, it’s not the harsh terrain, swamps, insects, and other hazards keeping people from the natural wonder – it’s the Chupacabra,...

As horror films go, until you start killing off your cast you should at least have something going on up on the screen that will keep out attention until then. Some do it with clever banter. Some do it with jokes and humor. Others do it with lots of fit and trim kids appreciating the heck out of life while they're young and beautiful before someone or something starts picking them off for our additional pleasure. That is where Alastair Orr's creature feature Indigenous comes in. Here is his young and hot cast enjoying themselves and each other at a secret hideaway in the jungles of Panama. Enjoy them while you can because something is preparing to pick them off one by one. Shame. A group of...

Indigenous
Written by Max Roberts
Directed by Alastair Orr
USA, 2014
Alastair Orr’s latest film, Indigenous, is a tropical creature feature about a group of hot American tourists who get lost in the Panamanian jungle and hunted by a mysterious beast. While the film won’t make it onto any of 2015’s top ten horror movies lists, Indigenous’ choice in movie monster and haunting setting make for a film just slightly outside of the standard scary movie norm.
Indigenous utilizes a familiar horror movie template. The film centers on a group of American twenty-somethings — they’re as vapid as they are hot — getting together to party it up one last time before the harsh responsibilities of the adult world transform them into Dockers-wearing, minivan-driving lame-o’s forever. The group travel down to Panama, and early on in their trip everything is aces. The weather is hot, the booze is plentiful,...

Fear the chupacabra! The chupacabra comes to theatres in Tribeca April 20th, 2014 as Indigenous. At the Tribeca Film Festival, Indigenous will have its World Premiere. For trivia buffs, the chupacabra is a strange looking, fictional creature (seen left), which eats goats and cattle. In Alastair Orr's (Expiration) film, Indigenous, the chupacabra goes after a group of noisy revellers. The film stars Zachary Soetenga, Lindsey McKeon, Sofia Pernas and Pierson Fode. And, horror fans can preview the premiere here, with the film's official trailer. Stop me if you have heard this before, but several friends head out on vacation. In Panama, they meet some locals, who take them out to a secluded waterfall. Here, people begin to disappear into the brush. And soon, a creature emerges from the woods - the chupacabra! Who lives and who dies depends on who can run faster, or slower. Indigenous will show at the...

Chupacabra sightings continue to ran rampant throughout the country, and we suspect the only time anyone's really gonna see one of these beasts (or at least someone dressed as one) is in Indigenous, which will be playing at this year's Tribeca Film Festival!
Check out a few stills and the trailer for Indigenous, which premieres as part of Tribeca's Midnight section. Its screening schedule can be found below the synopsis.
Written by Max Roberts and directed by Alastair Orr, the film stars Zachary Soetenga, Lindsey McKeon, Sofia Pernas, Pierson Fode, Jamie Anderson, and Juanxo Villaverde.
Synopsis
A group of five American friends on the cusp of adulthood travel to Panama to relax and reconnect. They befriend a local woman in their hotel bar, and despite some ominous whispers, she goes against the specific instructions of her brother and takes the Americans on a day trip into the pristine falls at the nearby jungle.

Though the mythical blood-sucking creature Chupacabra is the central antagonist in Alastair Orr's horror film "Indigenous," the main antagonist in the film's production seems to have been the exotic shooting locations that provided the director with as many obstacles as the characters in his movie. Tell us about yourself. I'm a 29 year old director from Johannesburg, South Africa. I got my start editing documentaries and soon moved on to cutting music videos and commercials. After a couple of years I got tired of cutting other peoples' work and started working on my own short films. The opportunity came up for me to direct a $50k zombie feature film and I attacked it with everything I had. After a gruelling shoot, I sent the film out to anyone in La who would give me the time of day, which was not too many people. I got some bites from various...

A group of friends travel to Panama to reconnect and relax when they meet a local who offers to show them the real Panama. The set-up sounds a whole lot like Aftershock but I'm hoping that director Alastair Orr can deliver a more interesting, and frankly better made, tale of vacations gone wrong.
Indigenous follows the five friends into the jungle where their guide disappears and they quickly come to realize they are now prey for the blood sucking Chupacabra. Ah, jungle monsters. What more could you ask for?

*there are spoilers here. Director: Alastair Orr. Writers: Jonathan Jordaan and Alastair Orr. Expiration is a film that completed in 2011, under the title Rancid. Since then, this film has received a release date through Grand Entertainment Group (April 19th, 2013). This low budget indie film was shot in South Africa and Expiration features a few characters stuck in a research lab. Fans of film will become familiar with these hallways as they are shot over and over again. Much of the film involves cat and mouse chase sequences, which create few thrills. Expiration is a fairly average zombie styled feature and most horror fans will likely be disappointed by this outing. The budget for this film was small and so is the story. The plot involves four participants in a research experiment. Unknowingly, they consent to allow the scientists to clone them. Then, their clones are given an experimental drug, called...
