Last weekend's Equality March in Washington D.C. got me to thinking about how far we have — and haven't — come in the fight for gay equality. But since AfterElton.com focuses on pop culture, I'm going to look at things through that lens and leave the political analysis for Pam's House Blend, Americablog, Bilerico and the other assorted gay political websites that cover the topic.
One of the very first times American television addressed the subject of gay men (bisexuality was almost never addressed) was way back in 1954 when the L.A. based tabloid talk show Confidential File presented "Homosexuals and the Problems They Present." Hmm, I'm guessing it wasn't terribly flattering unless it was about how boring straight people looked in comparison to us 'mos.
San Francisco's public TV station did the first ever documentary, The Rejected in 1961 and it wasn't until 1967 that a television show first featured a gay storyline.

Newly eliminated Top Chef contestant Ash Fulk is convinced that Padma Lakshmi doesn't like him...and never really has. When he was eliminated last night he said he'd like to cook again some day for the judges, but just not Lakshmi. "Through the whole season, she was not a big fan of mine," Fulk told me this morning. "The whole season, I kept running up against her. Her and I definitely didn't get along. I don't think she liked anything I made the whole time." But while he and Ms. Lakshmi might not be breaking bread together anytime soon, read on to find out about the bromance that seemed to be brewing between him and tattooed hottie Michael...

Someone was getting hitched and someone else went home on Wednesday’s Top Chef after the cheftestants were split into teams along conventional gender lines and asked to cook for a bachelor and bachelorette party with the men serving up food for the ladies and vice versa. Equally conventional: the entire wedding setup! Where were the Elvis impersonator, the drive-thru chapel and the “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” approach to late-night, last minute nuptials? Clearly this wedding was planned! Quickfire: Guest judge Todd English sidled up to a craps table as Padma explained the chefs' task: They had to roll dice and cook a dish in 30 minutes using the number of ingredients that matched the number they rolled. The winner would receive $15,000 and immunity. Last week's elimination challenge victor [1] Kevin impressed with his plate, as did last week’s runner-up Jennifer Carroll. But neither took the prize. Instead,...

Get ready to unpack your knives and stay for a while. Top Chef is back, baby. The sixth season of the popular reality cooking competition premieres tonight. This season, 17 chefs compete to see if luck will be a lady for them in Las Vegas. Please, TV gods, find a way for the producers to get show host Padma Lakshmi in a showgirl outfit.
As in past seasons, the show features two out lesbian/bi chefs among the 17 competitors. They are:
Preeti Mistry, a 33-year-old Executive Chef for the Bon Appetit Management Company at Google just south of San Francisco and Ashley Merriman, a 32-year-old chef at Branzino in Seattle.
Preeti Mistry (left) and Ashley Merriman
I'm glad to see they're dutifully helping to fulfill the show's faux hawk and tattoo quotas.
From their Bravo bio videos, Preeti started off in film before moving to London with her partner of 13 years...
