Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this year we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and today, Variety has unveiled the first official image of Bernhardt in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Produced by the late Roger Corman, the low budget sword and sorcery film Deathstalker was a hit in theaters back in 1983 and went on to become a cult classic through home video and TV airings, and it was followed by three sequels released between 1987 and 1991.
Decades later, Deathstalker will return with a fresh remake, and Variety has shared a first look image from director Steven Kostanski’s (The Void, PG: Psycho Goreman) new movie.
The website notes that the Deathstalker remake is now filming in Canada, with Raven Banner Entertainment launching sales in Cannes. Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick, Nobody, Barry) will star as the titular Deathstalker in what’s being described as “a newly reimagined installment of the cult sword and sorcery series of the same name.”

Raven Banner Entertainment has launched sales at the Cannes Film Festival’s market on the reboot of Roger Corman’s cult sword and sorcery film series, “Deathstalker,” which is currently shooting in Canada.
Daniel Bernhardt stars as the titular character in this reimagined instalment, directed by Steven Kostanski. Bernhardt plays a barbarian cursed by a magical talisman, leading him into conflict with a malevolent wizard and monstrous assassins.
The original “Deathstalker” films, produced by Corman in the 1980s, followed the success of John Milius’ “Conan the Barbarian.” Kostanski’s reboot focuses on the fantasy setting, utilizing creature suits, prosthetic FX make-up and stop-motion animation from his Action Pants FX shop, which recently completed work on upcoming horror-comedy “Frankie Freako,” which is also being sold by Raven Banner at Cannes.

Raven Banner Entertainment will launch international sales at the Cannes Film Market for Steven Kostanski’s latest feature “Frankie Freako.”
Kostanski’s previous feature “Psycho Goreman” premiered at SXSW in 2020 and gathered a cult following worldwide. Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman described the film as “‘The Toxic Avenger’ remade by the Robert Rodriguez of ‘Spy Kids.'”
“Frankie Freako” is described by Raven Banner as Kostanki’s homage to the practical-fx-driven monster horror-comedies of the 1980s like “Gremlins 2” and “Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College.” It tells the story of workaholic yuppie Conor Sweeney whose perfect life is turned upside down when he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the trio and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip,...

Manborg. Father’s Day. The Void. Leprechaun Returns. Psycho Goreman. There’s been a throwback element to all of the feature films we’ve gotten from director Steven Kostanski so far, and his next feature will be no different. “I’ve always been a huge horror fan, especially going back to the days when horror movies actually scared the hell out of you,” Slash said in a statement. “I want to get into the heart of the producing business so I can try and make movies that I’d like to see.”
Slash, Raven Banner and Gudiño recently partnered on the Nick Cutter-scripted film “The Breach,” which was produced by Patriki at Hangar 18. Slash has credits on the picture as composer and executive producer.
His new act, BerserkerGang, is being hatched in partnership with horror genre professionals Michael Paszt, James Fler and Andrew T. Hunt of Raven Banner; Rodrigo Gudiño, filmmaker and founder of Rue Morgue magazine; and producer Pasha Patriki of Hangar 18 Media.

Emergence from pandemic lockdowns and the promise of in-person festivals has excitement brewing for the future of film, and the genre industry is no exception. The official selection of the 2022 Frontières Platform at the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes is in, and it displays bullish trends for the future of genre.
“There’s a lot of horror, and it kind of goes back to practical effects, and I love that,” says Frontières executive director Annick Mahnert. “Practical effects are coming back, which is great.”
Highlighting this trend is potential standout “Gnomes!” from the Netherlands, a horror film about gnomes who murder curious humans and turn them into sausage while they’re still alive. The film boasts producer and art department master Richard Raaphorst (“Frankenstein’s Army”), who brought the gnomes to life.
Other possible standouts of practical effects are “Requiem for a Robot, “Street Trash” and “Serial Kitten,” which blends costumes and CGI.

Actress Lora Burke has been on something of a roll when it comes to genre films – she was astonishing in 2017s Poor Agnes, amazing in 2018s Lifechanger and now she’s back with For the Sake of Vicious, a cross between a home invasion thriller and the John Carpenter classic Assault on Precinct 13.
Set on Halloween (when else?) For the Sake of Vicious opens with kindhearted nurse Romina (Lora Burke), after a long shift at the hospital, coming home and finding a hostage in her house! Ian Hodgkinson, a.k.a. pro-wrestling’s Vampiro, is still undead — try as he, his opponents and the industry might.
In feature-length documentary “Nail in the Coffin: The Rise and Fall of Vampiro,” the semi-retired Lucha Libre legend “reveals the harsh realities behind the glamour of being in the world of wrestling.” That’s according to the doc’s logline, having seen the film, but we can attest to the harshness of Hodgkinson’s wrestling style — and his lifestyle.
You’ll still have to wait a few days to watch the movie, but readers will immediately see what we mean via the video above. In TheWrap’s exclusive sneak peek, his doctor wonders “How are you even f—ing walking?”

Over the span of three films from 2012–2014, the V/H/S franchise helped resurrect the horror anthology format with a wide range of found footage frights from some of the biggest names in indie horror. Now, at the dawn of a new decade, the V/H/S franchise is being rebooted with V/H/S 94.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, V/H/S 94 will feature segments directed by Simon Barrett, Timo Tjahjanto, and Chloe Okuno, with more directors to be revealed.
V/H/S 94 was written by David Bruckner (director of the upcoming Hellraiser film and the festival hit The Night House), who is producing alongside Bloody Disgusting co-founder Brad Miska, Cinepocalypse Productions' Josh Goldbloom and Parinda Patel (in conjunction with Studio71), and the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence.
Also onboard the movie's production team are Michael Paszt, James Fler and Andrew T Hunt, who will executive produce.
