Undeterred by the pandemic, the Zurich Film Festival kicks off this month with an impressive lineup that includes its biggest ever film, James Bond pic “No Time to Die,” which is set to screen just minutes after its Sept. 28 world premiere in London.
Zurich was one of the few major fests to have a full physical event last year during the Covid crisis. Despite concerns about new variants, organizers are confident that health safety measures will ensure a welcome return to cinemas. Zff artistic director Christian Jungen says the festival is working with embassies to safely bring in guests from other countries while relying on a verification process that includes vaccination certificates, current negative Covid test results or proof of recovery from infection.
“Here in Zurich to date, 70% of the population is vaccinated,” he says. “The city of Zurich has the highest rate in all of Switzerland and I am...

The British branch of Women in Film and TV has launched a campaign to highlight the huge number of freelancers who have been left unable to claim for either of the U.K. government financial schemes, leaving them in financial hardship.
Each day the organization, part of an international network of more than 13,000 women working in the entertainment business, will post across Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn the story of a freelancer who has fallen through the gaps of the schemes.
Liz Tucker, chair of Wftv (U.K.), said: “We already know from our recent survey that around two thirds of freelancers have been unable to claim under the government schemes, but when you read the individual heart-breaking stories of these individuals, the true personal impact of those left with no financial support real hits you. It is simply wrong and deeply unfair that these freelancers have been left with nothing.

Docs like 20 Feet From Stardom have shown us how delightful it can be for music fans to hang out with the unsung performers who back up famous musicians. The best of these usually zero in on a certain scene — à la Muscle Shoals or Standing in the Shadows of Motown — exploiting a community-building narrative as a way of getting us to care about players we don't know. Fran Strine's Hired Gun, on the other hand, is scattershot, introducing instrumentalists who've played everything from heavy metal to Disney kid-pop, and rarely doing much to capture its subjects' individual quirks....
