Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders has captivated audiences worldwide with the tumultuous world of the Shelby family, as they navigated the treacherous landscape of gang warfare and political intrigue. Loosely based on the real-life urban youth gang of the same name, the series incorporates elements from historical figures and addresses prevalent themes such as anti-Irish sentiment.

Update: Soon after this story was published, a source reached out to Variety to confirm that “Daisy Jones and the Six” will not be getting a Season 2 because “it was always planned as a limited series.”
Despite the success of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” star Riley Keough says the band isn’t getting back together anytime soon.
Despite fans hoping — and demanding — a second season of the Prime Video miniseries adaptation of Tara Jenkin Reid’s best-selling novel, Keough tells me, “I would love to but I don’t know if it’s in the cards…I haven’t heard anything.”
The series followed Daisy Jones (Keough) and her bandmates as they make their way through the Los Angeles music scene of the 1970s. The series premiered just over a year ago to positive reviews. Keough and Morrone earned Emmy nominations as did the show for outstanding limited or anthology series.

The banner outside the Majestic Hotel said it all.
“The Last Dance” read the message on the banner from Turkish-based television sales group Global Agency, a farewell gesture to the international TV market MIPTV, a fixture on the industry calendar since its launch in 1965, which will wrap its final edition this Wednesday.
The billboard summed up the wistful mood of many industry executives who made the final trip to the Mediterranean to say farewell to Mip.
“It feels like a funeral march,” quipped one German channel boss, as he strolled down the streets past the mostly empty restaurants and cafes. In MIPTV’s heyday, when more than 10,000 international executives crammed into Cannes for the annual Spring market, it was a battle to find a free table.
Those days are long gone and Mip’s demise, as a TV market designed for the pre-streaming era, was a long time coming. Event...

The boss of Mediawan has praised the “very smart” buying community who in recent years have moved on from a domineering TV rights position.
The industry has changed in the past three or four years due to various “constraints,” Elisabeth d’Arvieu explained at MIPTV, as she also delved into detail about how her Count of Monte Cristo seller has become more “agile.”
“Commissioners have been very helpful,” she said. “Three to four years ago they were taking all rights worldwide and we had no other solution [than to accept], but now because of the constraints they have been very smart and are willing to work on windowing or a geographic split.”
D’Arvieu, whose French major owns the likes of Brad Pitt’s Plan B, cited examples such as Netflix co-producing with Finland’s Yle, which “we wouldn’t have seen maybe three years ago.”

During the festival, Paramount+ and France Télévisions also announced they had teamed up for an eight-episode adaptation of Zorro (working title) starring Jean Dujardin, the Oscar-winning actor of The Artist. Jeremy Irons and double-Palme d’Or winner Bille August are gearing up for their highly-anticipated Count of Monte Cristo series but when offered the chance to work on the project, they had certain red lines.
“I wouldn’t have taken it if it was a movie, it had to be TV,” Danish director August told Deadline at Series Mania. “The story is so rich and deserves TV. For this one it was obvious.”
Oscar-winner Irons said TV series can do “these great novels justice” in a way that some movies can’t, referencing his breakout work on 1981’s Brideshead Revisited, which was across 13 episodes. Both stars have skewed towards movies during their decorated careers and Count Of Monte Cristo has never been made for TV. A 2002 movie version saw Richard Harris play Irons’ role.

Hollywood icon Alan Ritchson, renowned for his memorable performances across numerous films, has captivated audiences with his versatile talents. Despite his widespread popularity, even a star of Ritchson’s magnitude has encountered setbacks in his career trajectory.

After 20 years in the business, Alan Ritchson is finally having his moment. The actor is perfectly suited to his starring role in Prime Video's "Reacher," so much so you'd swear he was engineered in a lab for the sole purpose of bringing Lee Child's brawny blonde bruiser to life on the screen. It didn't come easy, though. After making some waves on "American Idol" and then popping up as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in a handful of "Smallville" episodes, Ritchson seemed primed to break out thanks to his role on the cult college football sitcom "Blue Mountain State." Instead, he spent most of the next decade serving as a third-tier player in various network shows and a handful of big-budget pictures.
Things might've gone very differently, had Ritchson landed the role of another blonde superhero beefcake. Not that long after being cast as the brash football captain Thad Castle on "Blue Mountain State,...

Alan Ritchson is opening up about why he lost two major roles in Thor and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
In a new interview, the Reacher actor is looking back at his career and talking about what led Marvel to not cast him in the titular role that ultimately went to Chris Hemsworth.
“I didn’t take it seriously,” Ritchson told Men’s Health of his audition for the superhero movie. “I was like, ‘They’ll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting.'”
Following his audition for the 2011 film, casting told his team he didn’t show had “the craft” for the role. Ritchson had previously played the DC superhero Aquaman in the Smallville series. The Marvel Cinematic Universe could have looked slightly different, Alan Ritchson revealed this week.

Disney+ isn’t wasting any time getting Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 underway.
While the renewal announcement came just a few days ago, executive producer Jon Steinberg says “there’s a couple of scripts” already in the works.
“They’re in really good shape. I think starting to boot up this machine again is an undertaking. There’s a lot of trains leaving the station all at the same time. But I think we’re feeling really good about creative and about how to plan for how to tell the stories,” he added during the Disney+ series’ panel at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
As with Season 1, Steinberg and executive producer Dan Shotz assured that they are leaning heavily on the book to tell the story. They will also rely on author Rick Riordan and his wife, executive producer Becky Riordan, to adapt Sea of Monsters.

The team behind Netflix’s hit Fool Me Once is reuniting for a new series — at a different streamer.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered Lazarus, a limited series from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst. The drama will star Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six) as a forensic psychologist who returns home after his father’s suicide and becomes entangled in a set of cold case murders. Bill Nighy, playing the lead character’s late father, and Alexandra Roach, as Claflin’s sister, also star.
Lazarus is based on an original idea from best-selling author Coben and Brocklehurst, who are writing the series together. The limited series will be Coben’s second at Prime Video, which ran (and then canceled) Shelter last year.
“Lazarus is a gripping series that captures your attention from the very beginning,” said Heather Curtis, current series executive, pan-English scripted SVOD TV at Amazon MGM Studios.

How did “Daisy Jones and the Six,” the 10-part Amazon Prime Video Series, come together? Executive producer Lauren Neustadter, who serves as film and television president at Hello Sunshine – the production company in which she’s partnered with Reese Witherspoon – credits her husband Scott Neustadter for finding and wanting to adapt the Taylor Jenkins Reid novel in 2019. “He read the book and fell madly in love with it,” she recalls., “and he bet on our production company . I remember he received it on Friday of that Fourth of July weekend. By the time we had dinner, he’d finished it. I stayed up well into the night reading and I remember emailing Reese and saying, ‘I know you’re on vacation, but I need you to take your iPad to the beach. By the time I woke up, she was halfway through the book and we were like, ‘We have to do this.

“Goodfellas” may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” but the Martin Scorsese crime drama served as inspiration for Nzingha Stewart, who directed four of the Amazon Prime Video series’ final five episodes. The back half of the limited series showcased the titular band at the height of its fame in the 1970s. More money meant more drugs, more problems, more messiness. It’s a far cry from the first half of the series, when the upstart group was just trying to land its big break, and showrunner Scott Neustadter encouraged Stewart to make her block completely different from the first one.
“I think it was always probably floating in the ether because I did watch ‘The Last Waltz,’ which was Scorsese’s documentary on a rock band just in me doing research on shooting live concerts. So it might...

"Hunger Games" fans returned to Panem in 2023 with the release of the prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," about the teen years of future President Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) and his ill-fated romance with folk musician Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). The movie did well enough at the box office and was mostly praised by critics (/Film's review was more mixed) — but is all that enough for a sequel?
Upon the release of "Ballad" in November 2023, several members of the cast and creative team sat down with People magazine to answer this question. The main takeaway from their answers? It depends on Suzanne Collins, author of "The Hunger Games." For reference, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" is adapted from Collins' eponymous novel (published in 2020), and she's given no indication that she's writing a sequel. Without literary source material, there won't be a film sequel either.

The cast of Daisy Jones and The Six was supposed to go on tour to perform the music from the Prime Video series. Star Riley Keough shared a video of those rehearsals before heading to the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on January 15, saying the 2023 Hollywood strikes ended that dream. Co-star Sam Claflin confirmed as much on the Emmys red carpet but said hope isn’t lost. “We were rehearsing to do live performances, but then the writers’ strike happened. We wanted to be in solidarity and support of the writers, and then the actors’ strike happened, so, of course, we couldn’t get involved,” Claflin told Variety (see below), adding that “maybe one day” they can get the band back together. Daisy Jones & The Six follows is loosely inspired by the creation of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic Rumours album. Keough plays the titular Daisy Jones, with Claflin playing The Six...

Sam Claflin Is ‘100%’ Open to Returning to ‘The Hunger Games’: ‘I Would Be All in for Finnick’s Dad’
Sam Claflin told Variety that he would be “100%” open to returning to “The Hunger Games” franchise.
Speaking with Marc Malkin during Variety On the Carpet, presented by Directv, Claflin opened up about his reaction to the prequel film “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and the potential for his widely beloved character Finnick to make an appearance in future “Hunger Games” projects.
Though he is willing to return to the dystopian world of Panem, Claflin fears his age might be a detriment: “I don’t know if there’s room for me to go back. I’m too old now.”
The actor did add, however, “I’ve heard rumors that people are asking for a Finnick prequel, and all I’m gonna say is that I would be all in for Finnick’s dad.”

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards TV nominations were announced January 10. While Gold Derby correctly predicted 75% of the nominees, more than a few seemingly safe bets failed to materialize (see the complete list of nominations). The Golden Globes have been and gone with “Oppenheimer” and “Beef” the night’s biggest winners in film and TV, respectively. Now, our attention turns to the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards. We’re taking a last-minute tour through our odds to finalize our predictions but, along the way, we’ve come across several performers who could secure their first-ever SAG nominations. Now, some thespians have been nominated for Best Ensemble before but never secured a solo bid. We are solely looking at performers who have never even been nominated for Best Ensemble, let alone an individual prize. So here are just four such names that we are heavily tipping to do just that and land their first SAG nominations.
Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) — Best Actor
Surprisingly, Cillian Murphy has never been nominated for a SAG award before — not even as part of an ensemble, despite starring in several Christopher Nolan movies including “Batman Begins,...

He went on to thank his family, Netflix, A24 and Beef’s cast and crew. “God bless you all,” he said.
Yeun won over a field that included Matt Bomer (for Fellow Travelers), Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & The Six), Jon Hamm (Fargo), Woody Harrelson (White House Plumbers) and...

Every year, some breakout names emerge victorious at various awards groups on just their first nominations. Last year, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won Golden Globes for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Austin Butler also won on his first bid, for “Elvis.” This year, several performers are in with a good chance of following in these performers’ footsteps and triumphing on their first nominations, too. Here are the most likely to win.
Lily Gladstone — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Lily Gladstone stars in Apple Original Films’ “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which tells the true story of the murders of Osage tribe members in the south of the USA in the 1920s. Gladstone demonstrates quiet power and searing intelligence in her heartbreaking role as Mollie Burkhart, who is one of the victims of the plan concocted by her husband (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his uncle (Robert De Niro). FX’s “Fargo” is facing some tough competition at the Golden Globes this year in the form of Netflix’s “Beef.” Noah Hawley‘s anthology limited series follows a different cast and storyline every season with the latest installment, the fifth season, featuring the likes of Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This story follows a kidnapping gone wrong that leads to implications for many.
This season has fared well, garnering three Golden Globe nominations: Best Limited Series/TV Movie, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for Hamm, and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for Temple. These two acting bids add to the Golden Globes history of “Fargo,” which has often done well in snagging nominations for its cast. Here’s the breakdown.
The first season saw Billy Bob Thornton win Best Limited Series/TV Movie in 2015 while co-star Martin Freeman was also nominated in the same category.

Sam Claflin as Billy Dunne, Daisy Jones & the Six (Prime Video)
Claflin had no trouble slipping into the intense feelings of ’70s-era singer Billy Dunne. “Emotions were so on the edge for me at the time,” says Claflin. “Previously when I’d shot emotional scenes, I’ve needed a tear stick to help push me over the edge. But on Daisy, I didn’t need one ounce of help.”
For Claflin, it was partially his own divorce that still loomed over him, but also the fact that star-crossed love was not an unfamiliar concept. “I have experienced unrequited love, the chasing and the inability of making certain decisions in certain moments,” he says. “There were so many conversations between Billy and Camila (Camila Morrone), or Billy and Daisy (Riley Keough), that I have experienced firsthand or seen friends go through.”

“Succession” made sure to make history on it’s way out, earning a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes for its farewell season. Those final nominations helped HBO score 17 overall, the most of any network at the 81st ceremony; the network netted 16 nominations and its streaming service Max landed one. It won a neck-and-neck race with Netflix, which earned 15 total, with Apple TV+ just missing out on double digits with nine.
In addition to those nine “Succession” nominations, HBO had success with its other drama series “The Last of Us,” which earned three bids. “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “The Diplomat” led the way for Netflix, which also got a boost by dominating the new Stand-Up Comedian on Television category with five bids out of the six total slots. “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” all contributed to the Apple TV+ tally.
