Durban (Sa), Aug 28 (Ians) Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the T20I series against South Africa after he hurt his ankle during a team’s training session here.
Maxwell’s absence opens the door for Matthew Wade to earn a recall to Australia’s side, with the veteran receiving a call-up for the series against South Africa and could provide another wicket-keeping option alongside Josh Inglis.
While the 34-year-old is expected to recover from the ankle concern in time for Australia’s World Cup campaign, national selector Tony Dodemaide said no risks would be taken with Maxwell given his injury history that includes the freak leg injury he picked up at a friend’s party late last year.
Dodemaide is confident Maxwell will return to national colours during Australia’s Odi series against India at the end of next month and be fully fit for the World Cup.

Dropping out of the list is recently retired former white-ball captain Aaron Finch and spinner Mitchell Swepson, while Matthew Wade, Matthew Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Matthew Kuhnemann have also been overlooked for a contract.

New Delhi, April 3 (Ians) Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack will be under focus in a bid to bounce back in Ipl 2023 in the comfort of their home ground when they host Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
The two teams have met only once in Ipl, during last year when Gujarat emerged victorious by 14 runs. Tuesday’s match is also the first time Gujarat will play an away match as part of the tournament returning to the home-and-away format.
Back to playing at their home base for the first time since 2019, Delhi will be itching to put up a much-improved show in all departments of the game after being underwhelming in a 50-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants in their tournament opener.
Their bowlers lacked the cutting edge with the ball, ground fielding was sloppy, and the batting line-up was blown away by Mark Wood’s raw pace.

Melbourne, Dec 28 (Ians) Left-handed batter Alex Carey on Wednesday scripted history as he became the second Australian wicket-keeper after legendary Rod Marsh to score a Test century at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (McG), on the third day of the second Test against South Africa, here.
Carey celebrated a brisk maiden Test hundred (111) in typically understated fashion. He carved a wide ball through the off-side with only an ear-to-ear grin giving away the fact he had just reached the rare milestone.
Infact, his batting partner Cameron Green showed even more elation, raising both arms as he ran from the other end before exchanging an embrace with Carey. The 31-year-old, who took 131 balls to bring up his century, was, however, visibly emotional after his achievement.
“As is Alex Carey’s way, there was a real humility in the way that he celebrated that,” his former Test coach Justin Langer told Channel Seven.

Melbourne, Nov 5 (Ians) Cricket Australia (CA) selectors might have to take some tough calls in the wake of the defending champions’ unimpressive performance in the Icc T20 World Cup at home, with former skipper Mark Taylor advocating for more youngsters to be blooded into the side.
Australia’s semifinal qualification hopes hinge on the England vs Sri Lanka match currently underway at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Jos Buttler’s team’s loss can only bring joy to the Australians.
But, given the way they have played in the tournament, losing the Super 12 opener to New Zealand by 89 runs, would have given the selectors food for thought. With the next T20 World Cup, to be hosted jointly in the Caribbean and the United States, the selectors have their task cut out and Taylor said one of the steps could be to bring in youngsters, as T20 cricket is not a game of 37 year olds.

Adelaide, Nov 4 (Ians) Australia managed to survive a late cameo from Rashid Khan to edge Afghanistan by four runs in their final Group 1 match in Super 12s of Men’s T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
After Glenn Maxwell made an unbeaten 54 off 32 balls to carry Australia to a competitive 168/6, Gulbadin Naib and Ibrahim Zadran were leading Afghanistan to a famous win with their 59-run stand off 46 balls for the third wicket.
But Australia made a comeback, triggering an Afghanistan collapse from 99/2 to 103/6. But Rashid kept the fight alive for an improbable victory with a 23-ball 48, hitting three fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 208.7.
But he had too much to do in the end for a famous victory, even though he gave Australia an almighty scare as Afghanistan ended at 164/7 in 20 overs. Australia now need Sri Lanka to beat England at the Sydney Cricket...

Brisbane, Oct 31 (Ians) Australia captain Aaron Finch returned to form with a fluent 63 against Ireland to keep their T20 World Cup campaign alive but hamstring injuries to three different players including him is a cause for concern for the defending T20 world champions.
A comfortable win was soured by multiple injuries including one to Aaron Finch after the captain had put in a match-winning hand at the Gabba.
Finch, who will go for medical scans on Tuesday, batted for all but 19 balls of Australia’s innings and then took to the field for the start of his side’s stint with the ball, before pulling up in discomfort after a sprint and came off the field.
Australia finished their bowling innings with Matthew Wade handed the captaincy reins, while they required three separate substitute fielders for Finch (right hamstring twinge), Tim David (left hamstring) and Marcus Stoinis (unknown).

Brisbane, Oct 31 (Ians) Lorcan Tucker’s fighting knock (71 not out off 48) went in vain as Australia produced a clinical all-round performance to hammer Ireland by 42 runs in a Super 12 game and keep their semifinal hopes alive in the ongoing Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at the Gabba, here on Monday.
With this win, Australia pushed their net run rate up to -0.304, still below that of England, but they moved to the second spot in Group 1 standings with five points in four matches. On the other hand, Ireland are in fourth spot with three points.
Australia skipper Aaron Finch played an excellent knock of 63 from 44 deliveries to guide his team to a commanding total of 179/5 in 20 overs, after they were invited to bat first. T20 World Cup: Australia coach McDonald fears more Covid-19 cases in squad ahead of must-win matches
Sydney, Oct 29 (Ians) Australia coach Andrew McDonald believes more Covid-19 cases could crop up within their T20 World Cup squad ahead of must-win matches against Ireland and Afghanistan.
The sight of a masked-up Matthew Wade on Friday evening interacting with teammates from a distance at the McG during rain delays may have been jarring for some in a country that had, until recently, enforced some of the world’s strictest bio-security rules.
Speaking about the rising number of Covid-19 cases amongst players at the ongoing Icc Men’s T20 World Cup, McDonald said it’s possible that more cases could crop up in his squad.
“He’s been tucked away in a change room by himself, which he would hate because he needs people around him to keep him entertained,” captain Aaron Finch told the host broadcaster on Friday.

Sydney, Oct 24 (Ians) Australian middle-order batter Marcus Stoinis has said his side revels when the chips are down and promised a comeback following the defending champions’ massive 89-run defeat against New Zealand in the Icc T20 World Cup Super-12 game at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 22.
Riding on a flourishing start from Finn Allen (42) and Devon Conway (92 not out), New Zealand blazed to 200 for the loss of just three wickets and then demolished the last edition’s champions for 111 runs in 17.1 overs to complete the rout.
“I saw ‘Wadey’ (Matthew Wade) spoke about that as well,” Stoinis was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au, referring to the wicketkeeper-batter’s comments he had always performed at his best when the chips were down.

Sydney, Oct 21 (Ians) The Super 12 stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup will open up with the re-match of the 2021 final at Dubai between Australia and New Zealand at a full-house Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg) on Saturday.
As another chapter of the trans-tasman rivalry awaits cricket fans, the eyes of both Australia and New Zealand will be on the skies apart from the pitch and on-field conditions with 90 rain forecast threatening to disrupt the proceedings.
“We haven’t seen the pitch either. It was covered all this morning. We won’t confirm an 11 just yet because, if it’s short, then it will be likely to change. So we just have to wait and see tomorrow much closer to the match and have a look at the pitch,” said New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson on rain being a factor in the pre-match press conference.

Sydney, Oct 21 (Ians) In the likelihood of regular Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade getting injured during the course of the Icc T20 World Cup, opener David Warner will take over from him, said skipper Aaron Finch ahead of the opening Super-12 match against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
With reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis ruled out of the tournament due to a freak hand injury suffered on the golf course, Wade is the only specialist glovesman in the side and Finch said in the event of the 34-year-old too getting injured, Warner would be the next in line for the role.
Finch ruled himself out for the role because of knee issues, adding that Warner had begun ‘keeping during training.

Sydney, Oct 21 (Ians) Tall Australian allrounder Cameron Green, who was included as a replacement for the injured Josh Inglis in the 15-member squad, will not be included in the playing XI for the opening Icc T20 World Cup Super-12 opener against New Zealand on Saturday, indicated skipper Aaron Finch, adding he had taken the “risk” of going with just one wicketkeeper in the showpiece event.
Australia lost their reserve wicketkeeper Inglis to a freak injury on the golf course and brought in Green in the 15-member squad. The defending champions go into the tournament with just one specialist wicketkeeper, Matthew Wade.
Asked if Cameron Green will come into the side for the opening Super 12 game against New Zealand straightaway, Finch said he doesn’t think so.

Sydney, Oct 21 (Ians) Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has said the loss of back-up wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis due to a freak injury on the golf course just a couple of days before the commencement of the Super 12 stage of the Icc T20 World Cup is “significant”, and added young allrounder Cameron Green is the right replacement for the injured player.
Green beat the likes of Alex Carey, Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott and Nathan Ellis for the spot that unexpectedly became available in the 15-member squad.

Sydney, Oct 20 (Ians) Ahead of their first Super 12 match in Icc Men’s T20 World Cup against New Zealand here on Saturday, Australia have announced all-rounder Cameron Green as a replacement for injured Josh Inglis in their 15-man squad, with the approval of the Event Technical Committee.
Inglis, the wicketkeeper-batter who has played nine T20Is for Australia and was seen as a backup to the main keeper Matthew Wade, suffered a freak injury while playing golf in Sydney on Wednesday. He sustained a deep cut in his right hand when his golf club snapped at the shaft and sliced through, resulting in surgery being needed for the same and requiring stitches.

Sydney, Oct 20 (Ians) Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the Men’s T20 World Cup after suffering a hand injury, which head coach Andrew McDonald called “an incredibly freak accident” while playing golf in Sydney.
Inglis, who has played nine T20Is for Australia, sustained a deep cut in his right hand when his golf club snapped at the shaft and sliced through. His exit from the tournament now sees Australia in a conundrum on who would be the preferred injury replacement.
“An incredibly freak accident to Josh, unfortunately. Playing the second hole at New South Wales, a short par three, he hit a six iron and as he made contact with the ground, the shaft snapped around the grip area and cut into his hands. It’s not looking good for Josh,” said McDonald on Sen Radio’s Whateley show.

Melbourne, Oct 19 (Ians) Australia’s back-up wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has suffered a bizarre mishap on the golf course, with the 27-year-old left hospitalised just three days ahead of the Icc T20 World Cup Super-12 opener against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg) on October 22.
The cricketer had to be treated on the fairway before being rushed to hospital after his golf club broke on impact with the ball, leaving Inglis with a deep cut in the right hand at the New South Wales Golf Club, according to a report in cricket.com.au.
The report added that Inglis would likely require a few stitches, with Cricket Australia (CA) issuing a statement on Wednesday saying the injury was being assessed. “Inglis did not appear likely to feature in Australia’s first match against New Zealand at the Scg anyway unless there was an injury to first-choice gloveman Matthew Wade,...

Hosts Australia are the defending champions and they will be keen to retain their title on home soil. However, the likes of England and India will be their biggest challenges.
No doubt, there are Sri Lanka, Pakistan who have also played impressive cricket in the build up to the World Cup, but it will be interesting to see if they can maintain the momentum in high-pressure events like the World Cup.
Australia, England and India also had their fair share of hiccups before the World Cup, but these professional teams know what it takes to deliver at the big stage. As the mega event is all set to begin, Ians takes a look at the aspects which make them top contenders to lift the...

How wrong one was, as the first cricket legend, Dr. W.G. Grace, when bowled out by the first ball he faced, decided to put the bails back and continue batting. His retort to the umpire was that the crowd had come to see him and not the bowler and certainly not the umpire!
The Ashes battle between England and Australia soon developed into a fierce encounter in which winning became a very important factor. The spirit of cricket was tarnished in the 1932/33 series by the England captain, Douglas Jardine, when he introduced the ‘Bodyline’ to stop the run-scoring Australian machine, Sir Donald Bradman.
The Bodyline series buried the spirit of the game completely. Jardine, if looked at in the present context, played according to the rules. His strategy after intense research and detailed planning could have been made into a Harvard case study. However, his tactics even though he was successful,...

Perth, Oct 10 (Ians) England skipper Jos Buttler has said he did not appeal Australia batter Matthew Wade obstructing bowler Mark Wood as he tried to take a catch in the opening T20I here on Sunday because it would have soured the atmosphere too early on the trip Down Under.
Australia wicketkeeper-batter Wade, who scored 21 as the hosts lost the first T20I by eight runs chasing 208, seemed to obstruct Wood as the England bowler tried to take a return catch.
There has been much talk in the media that Buttler should have appealed afterwards, but the England skipper said, “I didn’t really see what happened and we’ve only just got to Australia so I thought just carry on in the game.”
“I was asked if I wanted to appeal, and I thought, ‘We’re here for a long time in Australia. It would be a risky one...

Perth, Oct 9 (Ians) England beat Australia by eight runs in a thrilling first T20I to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series at the Perth Stadium, here on Sunday.
The win marked England’s first victory in men’s T20Is in Australia in 11 years. Their first and only win in Australia in a T20I came in 2011 in Adelaide when they won by one wicket. Since then, England lost all six T20Is they played in Australia until the game on Sunday.
Put in to bat, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales treated Australia’s second-string attack – none of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell made the long trip west – with disdain and recorded a 132-run opening partnership to put England on course for a big total.
It was the highest men’s T20I first-wicket partnership in Australia, and England’s second highest in the format.

Carrara Oval (Queensland), Oct 5 (Ians) A collective brilliant effort from pace quartet of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cameron Green followed by the crucial contributions of Aaron Finch (58 runs) and Matthew Wade (39 not out) guided Australia to a three-wicket win over the West Indies in the first T20I of the two-match series, here on Wednesday.
Captain Finch’s surprise demotion down the order paid off as the home team chased down the target of 146 with just a ball to spare.
Chasing a modest target, Australia didn’t have a smooth sailing. They lost the wickets of David Warner, Green, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Tim David were dismissed inside the first eight overs of the innings.
In the second over, Warner was dismissed by Cottrell. In the same over, he also induced Marsh to edge one behind. Green and Finch then calmed down the nerves in the...

Dubai, Oct 5 (Ians) India’s left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel on Wednesday was named as one of the three nominees for Icc Men’s Player of the Month award, following a series of impressive and restrictive bowling displays in the month of September.
Apart from Patel, Australia all-rounder Cameron Green and Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan are also nominated for the honour.
So often a key threat in India’s bowling attack, Patel enjoyed a prolific September to earn his first nomination for Player of the Month awards. Since the time senior left-arm spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to knee injury and subsequent surgery, Patel has brilliantly filled in the void during a run-fest T20I series between India and Australia.
Claiming a total of nine wickets at an average of 11.44 and with a superb economy rate of just 5.72, he most notably excelled...

Carrara (Gold Coast), Oct 5 (Ians) An almost full-strength Australia squad, including David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, will be up against the West Indies in a short two-match T20I series beginning at the Metricon Stadium here later on Wednesday, with both sides looking to give final touches to their preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup, beginning on October 16.
Dashing opener Warner, who was rested from the three-match T20I India tour, will be back along with Marsh — who was sidelined due to an ankle injury — and pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, who was tending to a knee issue.
However Ashton Agar and Kane Richardson, who are both members of Australia’s 15-member T20 World Cup squad, are not part of the series.
“We have and are taking a cautious approach with the World Cup on the near horizon,” National Selection Panel (Nsp) Chair George Bailey was quoted as saying by cricket.

Hobart, Oct 4 (Ians) Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine is set for Sheffield Shield return with the wicketkeeper-batter confirmed to play for Tasmania in their fixture against Queensland on October 6.
This will be the 37-year-old Paine’s maiden first-class outing in 18 months. A report in cricket.com.au said on Tuesday that while the player “was not offered a state contract by Tasmania for the 2022/23 season after walking away from the game last summer, he will line up for the Tigers against Queensland at the Allan Border Field (in Brisbane) on Thursday”.
The report added that Paine will be the wicketkeeper as Matthew Wade is with the Australia squad for the T20 World Cup, while other wicket-keeping options, Ben McDermott and Jake Doran, will play as batters.
“He (Paine) has been training with us the last couple of months,” Tasmania coach Jeff Vaughan was quoted as saying in the report.

Sydney, Sep 29 (Ians) In the absence of swashbuckling David Warner, all-rounder Cameron Green smoothly delivered in his new role as an opener in the T20Is against India, hitting two stunning half-centuries in Mohali and Hyderabad at a whopping strike-rate of 214.54.
Green’s eye-catching knocks saw him land a spot in Australia’s upcoming two-match T20I series against West Indies on the Gold Coast and Brisbane on October 5 and 7 respectively. But with Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc returning, Green may not be in the playing eleven.
Marsh, the all-rounder who was critical in Australia winning Men’s T20 World Cup at the UAE last year, believes that though the cricket fans and critics were taken by surprise on seeing Green’s onslaught with the bat, none of the members in the side were left astonished.

Dubai, Sep 28 (Ians) Stylish Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav moved one position ahead to attain a career-best-equalling second position, closing gap on No 1 Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan in the latest Icc Men’s T20I Player Rankings, released on Wednesday.
In the latest weekly update that considers performances in the second and third matches of the India-Australia series, Suryakumar is at second position with 801 rating points after smashing a match-winning 69 off 36 deliveries in the third T20I in Hyderabad on Sunday that helped hosts clinch the series 2-1.
On the other hand, Pakistan opener Rizwan has retained his top spot in the batting charts after his brilliant displays in the ongoing seven-match series against England.
The 30-year-old Rizwan has notched up scores of 88 not out, 8 and 88 in the second, third and fourth T20Is against England, helping him maintain his position at the top. His performances helped Pakistan win the second and the fourth T20Is,...

Melbourne, Sep 28 (Ians) A full-strength Australia will take on the West Indies in the two-match T20I series beginning at the Carrara Oval on October 5, with the likes of David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, and veteran pacer Mitchell Starc returning to the fold for the fixture just weeks ahead of the start of the Icc T20 World Cup at home.
The quartet had missed the three-match T20I series against India due to various reasons and their return to the side will add the much-needed firepower ahead of the global showpiece event, of which Australia are the defending reigning champions.
Besides the return of the four stalwarts, young Cameron Green will get another opportunity to prove his T20I credentials as he has also been included in the 16-member squad.

Melbourne, Sep 27 (Ians) Australia wicket-keeper and middle-order batter Matthew Wade could be their choice for skipper for the Icc T20 World Cup at home next month, should regular skipper Aaron Finch suffer an injury or his string of poor scores continues, said a report in Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday.
Wade, who is currently not in Cricket Australia’s contracted list, was first tipped to lead the Kangaroos when Finch missed a T20 game against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2020, but his reported disciplinary record went against him at that time, despite him being a “seasoned state captain” and “one of the most critical members of the side”.
Wade’s name has cropped up at a time when another seasoned cricketer, David Warner is being talked about as someone who can fill up the captaincy slot in the Australian One-day International side left vacant by Finch’s recent retirement.

Hyderabad, Sep 26 (Ians) Having played only one T20I before the three-match series against India and not opening the innings before in any T20 cricket, Cameron Green turned out to be the surprise package for Australia. In the absence of David Warner, Green smoothly delivered in his new role as an opener in T20Is by smashing two stunning half-centuries at a whopping strike-rate of 214.54.
After his exploits on Sunday in the third T20I at Hyderabad, where he smashed a sensational 52 off 21 balls, including reaching his fifty in just 19 balls, Green, 23, earned rich praise from head coach Andrew McDonald on performing exceedingly well throughout the series.
“He’s certainly embracing the challenge of opening. We’ve asked him to show great intent at the top of the order and I think everything we’ve seen so far shows that he’s doing that. It’s probably opportunistic the way...

Melbourne, Sep 26 (Ians) Australian cricket legends Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh have opined that power-hitter Tim David should be in the side for the upcoming Icc T20 World Cup at home and believe the team management should take a call on whether to include either of Steve Smith or Marcus Stoinis in the XI for the showpiece event beginning on October 16.
Though David managed just 18 and two for Australia in the first two matches of the T20I series against India, the 26-year-old was in blazing form in the third match, smashing a half-century in the final game in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Australia got off to a blazing start and ended in whirlwind fashion but the Indians did well in the middle overs to peg them back.
Green (52 off 21 balls) gave the innings the early momentum as he blasted the third fastest fifty for Australia in T20 cricket, racing to his half-century off 19 deliveries while David, the big-hitter who started his career with Singapore before moving to Australia, gave the innings the much-needed push towards the end as Australia recovered from 117/6 in 14th over to post a respectable total.
Tim David and Daniel Sams raised 68 runs for the seventh wicket off 34 balls as Australia went for the leather in the final four overs, hitting 21 runs off the 18th over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and 18 off the 19th bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. But Harshal Patel bowled a superb final over, conceding only 7 runs and sent back the dangerous David as Australia ended with 187/7 in their 20 overs.

Hyderabad, Sep 25 (Ians) India won the toss and elected to bowl first against Australia in the series-deciding third and final Twenty20 International at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
This is the first international match at this venue since the 2019 match between India and West Indies.
India made one change in the team that won the 2nd match in Nagpur, bringing in Bhuvneshwar Kumar in place of Rishabh Pant.
“A lot of noise on the ground. It’s good to be back in Hyderabad and play in front of this crowd. We look to keep winning games, it’s important to maintain your momentum in this format of the game, so it was a good win for us. Australia have always been challenging, they bring in a different kind of challenge,” said Rohit Sharma during the toss.
“We need to keep doing the basics right if we have to get success.

Nagpur, Sep 24 (Ians) Apart from India captain Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 20-ball 46 guiding India to a series-levelling six wicket win over Australia in eight overs a side affair at Nagpur, left-arm spinner Axar Patel’s brilliant spell was very crucial in giving the hosts an early upper hand.
Patel’s two overs, one of which was bowled in the powerplay, went for only 13 runs. He kept things tight while ratting the stumps of Glenn Maxwell and Tim David and also bowled four dot balls to Matthew Wade, who had two unsuccessful tries at reverse sweeping him before getting a boundary on third attempt.
“We were waiting in the dressing room for a long time. But even then, we were discussing plans and talking about the game being a small one (in terms of overs), and remaining switched on for the match. When you know it is a shortened game, the...

With Australia posting 90/5 in their innings in the match reduced to eight-over-a-side after a 2 hours and 30 minutes delay due to a wet outfield, Rohit and Rahul came with aggressive intent in order to take early control of the game.
Rohit started the fireworks as he blasted Josh Hazelwood for back-to-back sixes in the first over — the second one a superb effort as he pulled it over the deep square boundary when the bowler chased him to the leg side.
On the last delivery of the over, Rahul whipped a half-volley on the leg stump from Hazelwood over the mid-wicket as India scored 20 runs off the first over.
Though India lost a couple of quick wickets, the early onslaught kept them ahead of Australia, Rohit continued to blaze away, leading from the front with a 20-ball 46 not out as India defeated Australia by six wickets in the second T20I truncated...

With the match reduced to eight overs, Australia were looking to put up a big total after being asked to bat first by Rohit Sharma after winning the toss.
The visitors were reduced to 46/4 in the fifth over when skipper Aaron Finch departed for 31 as he became Jasprit Bumrah’s first victim on return to action after an injury. With India chasing a target of 91 in a match delayed by two hours and 30 minutes, Rohit came out with aggressive intent and blasted Josh Hazelwood for two back-to-back sixes in the first over. He continued in the same vein as he ended with 46 runs off 20 balls, hitting four fours and four sixes.
Adam Zampa caused a big scare in the Indian dressing room as he sent back Virat Kohli (5) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) off successive balls but Rohit steadied the nerves as he continued to score runs from the other end. Dinesh Karthik blasted a six and a four off two deliveries in the eighth and final over as India romped to a six-wicket win.
Earlier, Matthew Wade continued to prove a thorn in the side for India in the ongoing series as he blasted an unbeaten 43 off 20 deliveries to help Australia post 90/5 in eight overs in the match truncated due to a wet outfield.

Nagpur, Sep 22 (Ians) The experience of playing in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) in India came in handy as Tim David, who played 14 Twenty20 Internationals for Singapore, made his debut for Australia in the first T20I of the three-match series against India at Mohali on Tuesday.
Because of his familiarity with the Indian conditions and having played against most of the Indian players in the Ipl, David did not feel much pressure as he along with wicketkeeper Matthew Wade guided Australia to a four-wicket win against India at the Punjab Cricket Association Is Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
David struck a 14 -ball 18, hitting one four and one six, and raised 62 runs for the sixth wicket partnership with Wade (45 off 21 balls) as they guided Australia to the verge of victory.
Having made his name in franchise cricket all over the world, David was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021 before being...

Nagpur, Sep 22 (Ians) One of the videos that went viral at the start of this week was from Australia’s nets session in Mohali ahead of the first T20I against India and had Tim David tonking the ball far and wide, getting ready for what was eventually a memorable debut for Australia.
Playing Twenty20 cricket for Singapore a few years ago, David had never imagined that one day he would be playing for Australia and on the brink of getting picked for a T20 World Cup to be hosted by the country next month.
David made his debut for Australia in white-ball cricket against India in the first T20I of the three-match series on Tuesday and along with Matthew Wade helped the visitors emerge winners by four wickets and take 1-0 lead in the series.
David was born in Singapore to Australian natives who moved there in the early 1990s.

However, on the eve of the second T20I of the three-match series that will be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium at Jamtha near here on Friday, middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav came out in support of the bowlers.
Yadav said a lot of factors played their role in the match on Tuesday. "You will have to consider things like the match into the final over, there was dew (that played a role) and credit should also go to the Australian batters as they kept attacking from the start, Harshal is coming back from an injury, so we have to cut him some slack. We are trying out best," said Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Friday’s 2nd T20I at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium here.
He denied that opposition batters are easily picking Harshal Patel’s off-cutters and claimed seasoned pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar was as deceptive and effective as ever.

Going into the opening match, the Indian team management wanted some more inputs on the opening and middle order batting and the quick bowling options as senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah is still not ready to play while senior bowler Mohd Shami had to withdraw from the series due to a Covid positive test before the start of the series.
Though former India skipper Virat Kohli struck his 71st international century in the match against Afghanistan in Asia Cup Super Fours, the batting still did not have a settled look as opener K.L Rahul had just returned from a lengthy injury break. The question of the all-rounder in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja too was looking.
The first T20I match against Australia was to provide some answers to these conundrums. But that did not happen in the end as India lost the match by four wickets to concede a 0-1 lead in the three-match series.
