The Hype House. The Sway House. The Clubhouse. The Not a Content House. If the rise of TikTok collab houses in late 2019 and early 2020 seemed swift, it’s because it was. Hype House co-founders Chase Hudson and Thomas Petrou even said that going from initial idea to signing a lease took just 13 days.
Even though these collab houses — homes where influencers, usually teenaged or twentysomething, live and create content together — seem novel, the concept of making physicals hubs for creatives to work together isn’t. The first collaborative social media house, The Station, was founded in July 2009 by a collective of early YouTubers including Shane Dawson, Phil De Franco, LisaNova and iJustine. Working out of various homes in Venice Beach, California, the group put together sketch comedy videos and quickly became the second most-watched web series on YouTube. Trisha Paytas is telling me about the last time she got yelled at on the internet.
It was after a Halloween episode of her podcast, Just Trish, in which the influencer and YouTuber dressed as her then-obsession, the Weeknd in the HBO series The Idol. Wearing pale-pink hospital scrubs, a fake soul patch, and a do-rag, Paytas argued to her co-host, Oscar Gracey, that being a “full-time stay-at-home parent is 10 times harder than someone who can leave.” She referred to the nonparenting labor of working moms as “a break.” The backlash was vicious.

Wyoming has the fewest residents among all U.S. states, but for a few hours on July 14, its population swelled considerably.
On that day, beauty influencer Jeffree Star drew a record-breaking crowd for the grand opening of a brick-and-mortar shop in Casper. The so-called “Jeffree Star Store” sells a unique combination of products: makeup and meat.
Star’s fans came from far and wide to check out the eclectic new store. “We came all the way from Bentonville, Arkansas — 14, 15 hours from here,” attendee Liset Garcia told Oil City News. “I’ve followed Jeffree Star since he was a YouTuber and went through my middle school and high school years being emo because of him.” A fan named Odessa Castillo told Business Insider that she drove from Wisconsin to catch the opening. “Jeffree means everything to me,” Castillo said.
According to Business Insider, some attendees waited over 12 hours for their chance to enter the store.

The 2023 Streamy Awards, which recognizes the internet’s top creators, is moving up its awards ceremony from its traditional December date to Aug. 27.
Like past years, this year’s Streamys will take place in Los Angeles. Nominations for the show have now opened and will include the new category of Rolling Stone Sound of the Year, which seeks to honor the song that dominated social media. Nominees will be announced in July.
Heading into this year’s awards ceremony, Jimmy Donaldson (best known as “MrBeast”) will be the creator to beat, given that he has clinched the top creator of the year prize for three years in a row. Past winners for the category have included Tana Mongeau, Shane Dawson and the Dolan Twins.

Horror’s technological evolution into Screenlife nightmares like Spree or Deadstream continues with Travis Bible’s #chadgetstheaxe, the latest skewer-happy examination of dangerous social media obsessions. It’s becoming a more challenging subgenre that requires intense authenticity in performances and digital details, especially since actual YouTubers are starting to become parodies of themselves. Bible and co-writer Kemerton Hargrove key into Logan Paul or Shane Dawson-type online personalities and their willingness to — for example — monetize videos that feature actual dead bodies. The attraction of infinite adoration from fanbases is too much for some to ignore, and #chadgetstheaxe is a fun-filled, sneaky-creepy reminder that sometimes internet superstardom isn’t worth the likes or attention.
The film starts by centering on “#Spicy” Steve (Michael Bonini), a likable-enough vlogger who teams up with mega-popular prankster Chad Ryan (Spencer Harrison Levin) for the ultimate video. Steve wants to prove he’s not a coward...

The YouTuber movie is one that's often been considered very specific. Usually, they are comedies that star and/or are made by a YouTube content creator specifically to appease their fanbase. None of these are what you can consider future Oscar contenders, but as long as they succeed in satisfying their target audience, they'll be perfectly fine. Right?
If the history of these movies is anything to go by though, a ton of YouTuber movies aren't particularly successful in winning this niche fanbase, let alone general audiences. In a way, it almost seems like the sheer amount of terrible movies with a YouTuber's name on them has set back one of YouTube's primary appeals in the first place. This is, of course, the platform's unique ability to allow creatives to find a platform for their work, eventually building up to bigger projects.

Scream queen and horror's current "It-girl," Jenna Ortega, has signed on to star and produce in a coming-of-age romantic drama that's being described as Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise" meets "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." The film, "Winter Spring Summer Or Fall," is the feature directorial debut of Tiffany Paulsen, who folks may know for writing the films "Holidate" and "About Fate." The script comes from Dan Schoffer, who wrote the script that was used in the Starz filmmaking competition show, "The Chair," which became Shane Dawson's "Not Cool" and A.M. Lukas' "Hollidaysburg."
In an interesting bit of casting news, Ortega will be starring opposite her "Wednesday" co-star, Percy Hynes White, who played Xavier Thorpe on the Netflix series. The duo will play a pair of teens who "meet and fall in love over four significant days of the year," according to a report from Deadline.

Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter made something special with "Deadstream," a thrilling and hilarious Pov horror film about a disgraced YouTuber desperately attempting to win back his audience by pulling the most ridiculous stunt imaginable. Joseph Winter stars as the fictional Shawn Ruddy, an insufferable online personality armed with all of the hot new technological gadgets viewers assume (and often demand) all creators utilize, who breaks into a notorious haunted house called Death Manor to livestream his overnight stay.
As this is a film starring a YouTuber-turned-streamer, Ruddy does just about everything a horror movie has taught us not to do in a haunted house, including destroying sacred items, performing a seance, reading Latin out loud, and talking wicked smack about the ghostly inhabitants as a means to keep his viewers interested. The comparisons to "The Evil Dead" and "Hell House LLC" are easy to make and not inaccurate, but...

After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual.
For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among...

Friends since St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering, outside of Toronto, the two figured they’d mostly talk about streetwear. YouTube is shedding additional light on its Creator Responsibility Initiative, a policy that delineates the ways in which creators -- like David Dobrik, Shane Dawson, and Logan Paul -- can get demonetized or suspended for causing harm to the community at large without expressly violating platform guidelines.
"Not to sound all dad-like here,” explains creator liaison Matt Koval in a new video, “but with great popularity comes great responsibility.”
The policy applies when massive creators engage in reckless or dangerous behavior -- whether on video or not, Koval says -- that YouTube and advertisers do not want to be associated with. The policy dates back to the Adpocalypse, and appears to have first been tendered against Paul amid his suicide forest controversy in order to protect the reputation and revenues of the YouTube's greater community of creators and advertisers. "When advertisers pull their spend," Koval says, "everybody loses."

Fourteen months after YouTube suspended right-wing commentator Steven Crowder from its Partner Program, the video giant has reinstated monetization on Crowder’s channel today.
Crowder was suspended on June 5, 2019, following his racist and homophobic harassment of former Vox journalist Carlos Maza, in which he referred to Maza in videos as a "lispy queer" and "anchor baby." Crowder was also punished for the sale of hateful merch touting the slogan, 'socialism is for f*gs'.
The decision to reinstate monetization for Crowder is bound to elicit outrage -- as did YouTube's initial handling of the situation. In this instance, the company is charged with balancing what it says is a consistent application of its policies with welcoming a creator back into the fold who has made comments that run afoul of its corporate values, and which were reprehensible in the eyes of many employees. Maza, for his part -- who left...

Morphe, a beauty brand and brick-and-mortar retailer that has made a name for itself largely thanks to close relationships with YouTube's top beauty vloggers, has today ceased all commercial affiliation with YouTube megastar and cosmetics entrepreneur Jeffree Star.
Morphe did not go into detail about the reasoning behind its decision to cut ties with Star, whose eponymous beauty brand is sold in Morphe retail stores as well as online, and who has also collaborated with Morphe on co-branded collections. That said, Star has become engulfed by controversy in recent weeks -- at least due in part to his association with Shane Dawson, with whom he collaborated on a blockbuster docuseries and top-selling makeup line called the Conspiracy Collection through his own company, Jeffree Star Cosmetics.
Morphe, which previously sold Jeffree Star Cosmetics, dropped Dawson and Star's collection after old videos of Dawson came to light that saw him donning blackface and making pedophilia jokes.

The statement arrives as many creators -- including Jenna Marbles, Shane Dawson, and even Dobrik’s ex-girlfriend, Liza Koshy -- are looking back on their past work with fresh eyes amid a racial reckoning about systemic inequality and police brutality precipitated by the killing of George Floyd at the end of May.

Tati Westbrook dropped an explosive video this Tuesday detailing the events that led her to post the consequential video "Bye, Sister" about James Charles. In an explosive forty-minute video -- marking her return to YouTube after a two-month absence -- beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook is shedding new light on her now-infamous feud with James Charles, which ignited the beauty community last year, and saw Charles lose millions of subscribers while dealing a substantial blow to his reputation.
Last May, in a video titled Bye Sister, Westbrook accused Charles of being a disloyal friend with an outsized ego, and for attempting to use his fame to seduce straight men.. Today, however, Westbrook alleges that Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star “used, coerced, and manipulated” her into making the Bye Sister video because they wanted to destroy Charles’ career.
Dawson, for his part, denied allegations that he orchestrated the Bye Sister video in a since-deleted memo posted to Twitter last week, where he announced his departure from YouTube's beauty community, explaining that the drama had become too much to bear.

Amid a firestorm of controversy, YouTube confirms to Tubefilter that it has suspended monetization on all three of Shane Dawson’s channels. Dawson operates flagship hub Shane, Shane Dawson TV (8.4 million subscribers), and a newer beauty channel, Shane Glossin'.
YouTube tells Tubefilter it takes such action in rare circumstances where a particularly newsworthy creator's bad behavior could have a negative impact across its collective community of creators, viewers, and advertisers. In opting to demonetize Dawson, YouTube said it took into account both the impact and nature of his previous videos, as well as his off-platform behavior. Demonetization was initiated last night on June 29, YouTube said, and the length of the punishment is indefinite.
In recent days, Dawson has apologized for numerous reprehensible videos that have surfaced from his past, including one where he pretended to masturbate to a photo of Willow Smith, as well as other instances of blackface, using the N-word,...

On Saturday, June 27, the mother of two wrote on Twitter, "To Shane Dawson ... I'm done with the excuses." Following his mother's tweet, Jaden took to his own social media...

YouTube star Shane Dawson wants his millions of fans to know that he's not the person he used to be. YouTube has canceled “Escape the Night” after four seasons, ending its longest-running original series, Variety has confirmed. The semi-scripted murder-mystery series was hosted by Joey Graceffa, who presided over the retro mega-collab in which a famous YouTuber got killed off in each episode.
But Graceffa isn’t letting “Escape the Night” fade to black.
In a video posted Tuesday, he said Season 5 of the show was not happening “this year” but he left the door open for the series to return (which would be under different auspices now that YouTube has dropped it). “I don’t know when there will be a Season 5,” Graceffa said, saying it was unable to go forward because Covid-19 production shutdowns.
Graceffa didn’t say that “Escape the Night” was canceled. However, a source tells Variety that YouTube declined to pick up “Etn” Season 5.
In lieu of a new season, Graceffa teased a new interactive...

Shane Dawson’s beauty aspirations have not subsided in the wake of his blockbuster collaboration with Jeffree Star or the sold-out makeup collection that the duo documented in their latest series.
On the Community Section of his flagship YouTube channel yesterday, Dawson announced the creation of a new channel called Shane Glossin' that he says will serve as a repository for creative makeup experimentation, slime videos, or deleted scenes from The Beautiful World Of Jeffree Star. Notably, Shane Glossin' is also the name of one of the products in Dawson’s 'Conspiracy Collection' -- a clear lip gloss.
“I know makeup related videos aren’t for everyone so I started a channel for that kinda stuff if you’re interested,” he wrote, adding that he didn’t intend to make an announcement but did so after a fake channel popped up. “Don’t worry, I’m not trying to be a guru or anything!

YouTube revealed its top videos of the year on Thursday, with Lil Nas X and Shawn Mendes being two of the standout performers when it came to music videos, while established creators like PewDiePie also made an appearance on its year-end roundup.
Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” which featured Billy Ray Cyrus, was the most-viewed music video in the U.S. this year. The video for the mammoth single, which was uploaded in early April, has racked up nearly 470 million views so far — even though it only includes the song and artwork of two horses galloping; the live-action music video that came out the following month, pulling in about 400 million views, ended up being the fifth most-viewed U.S. music video of the year.
Internationally, though, the song was “only” the fifth most-liked music video of the year, falling behind Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, who grabbed the top slot with “Senorita.

Killer Merch, the merchandise firm co-owned by YouTube luminary Jeffree Star, has unveiled its latest launch -- alongside the digital multi-hyphenate Cody Ko.
The company -- which furnishes ecommerce, design, production, and fulfillment services -- works with a variety of YouTubers on their merch ventures, including Shane Dawson, Danny Duncan, and Joey Graceffa. While the company has previously repped Tiny Meat Gang -- the comedy and music duo comprising Ko and fellow creator Noel Miller -- it has now opted to release collections with both Miller and Ko independently.
“We started with Cody’s podcast group Tiny Meat Gang about a year ago,” Killer Merch's business development manager, Stefan Toler, tells Tubefilter. “For Tmg, we handle their ecommerce and also their tour merchandise, which does very well. We also just launched Noel Miller’s store recently that was very successful. So now we’re finishing the year up with Cody,...

Though it was initially expected to comprise nine episodes, Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star have wrapped up their epic docuseries, The Beautiful World Of Jeffree Star, with seven total installments. The feature-length season finale, which dropped on Friday, clocked in at roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes.
The briefer-than-anticipated episode count initially left some fans nonplussed -- especially because the trailer for the series comprised scenes from Dramageddon 2.0 -- a so-coined event in the beauty community involving the explosive friendship dissolution between Tati Westbrook and James Charles. However, after Dawson's Conspiracy Collection hit shelves and sold out -- the creation of which was chronicled in Beautiful World -- Dawson appeared in a disheveled Instagram Live where he discussed his uncertainty about how to proceed with the series, expressing concern about dredging up old drama.
In the end, Dawson did briefly address Dramageddon -- though with surface-level treatment in which he showcased his...

Before there was SeatGeek and Honey, there was Seriously Digital Entertainment -- the Finnish mobile gaming company behind the Best Fiends franchise, known for its myriad sponsorship pacts with countless YouTube stars.
In 2016, for instance, Seriously said that it was allocating 90% of its marketing budget to influencer campaigns -- to the tune of 700 sponsored YouTube videos (at the time) that were created alongside the likes of Shane Dawson, NikkieTutorials, and Rcl Beauty. Accordingly, daily installs of its game increased six-fold in 2016 over the year prior, and daily U.S. revenues increased four-fold, the company said.
Three years later, Seriously is forging onward with its bold influencer strategy for the launch of its latest game, Best Fiends Stars, which bowed yesterday. In order to promote the launch of the match-three puzzler, which features a social component where players can team up with friends to earn rewards, the company has tapped topped YouTubers David Dobrik,...

Even casual Shane Dawson fans are likely familiar with Honey -- the browser extension that automatically aggregates online coupons, and which has served as the sponsor of many a Dawson docuseries. Headlines even swirled, back in January, when one of Dawson’s conspiracy theory videos -- which featured a custom Honey ad -- was demonetized for several hours, likely costing the YouTube star some $14,000.
Now, Los Angeles-based Honey -- which was founded in 2012 by entrepreneurs George Ruan and Ryan Hudson -- is under new ownership, having been acquired by online payments platform PayPal for $4 billion. The acquisition, paid for primarily in cash, per Techcrunch, marks PayPal’s largest to date.
Honey currently counts 17 million monthly active users -- most of whom are younger millennials -- and its extension works across 30,000 merchant websites. It says that it has helped users save more than $2 billion to date. PayPal, for its part, counts 300 million users,...

Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star aren’t the only YouTube creators who have a blockbuster makeup launch on their hands.
Beauty Og Tati Westbrook, whose profile (and subscribership) skyrocketed in the wake of her friendship dissolution with James Charles earlier this year, has provided a window into the massive success of her first color launch — an eyeshadow palette dubbed Textured Neutrals Vol. 1 — while teasing that more products from her Tati Beauty brand are right around the corner..
While Star and Dawson said they sold more than 1 million palettes in 30 minutes, and are currently readying a restock strategy after crashing Shopify, Tati also sold out of her initial launch — to the tune of 100,000 palettes (priced at $48 apiece) within 12 hours, for a total of $4.8 million in sales. While the initial run sold out quickly, Westbrook shared that customers could still tender preorders for the second printing of the palette, which are slated to be delivered in December.

Word to the wise: when one of the biggest creators in YouTube history makes a multi-part docuseries chronicling a collaboration with the platform’s biggest beauty channel, a staggering number of fans are going to want to buy it.

Shane Dawson, Jeffree Star, and the duo’s legions of fans are losing their collective minds on social media after the launch of their long-awaited Conspiracy Collection has hit a serious technical snafu.
The issue, which is preventing consumers from purchasing the collection, appears to be with the ecommerce host that powers the Jeffree Star Cosmetics (Jsc) website: Shopify. According to numerous users on Twitter, technical issues began to appear shorty after the launch at 1pm Et, and have been ongoing for roughly the past three hours.
