The popularity of ghost stories are a cultural puzzle: They freak us out, but we can’t get enough of them. But the appeal of ghost stories goes beyond the thrill of being scared; it’s about finding the answers to life’s biggest question — what happens to us after we die?
“Ghost Stories” tackles this age-old question with a fresh and chilling take on the supernatural that offers up three tantalizing stories of the unexplained, building to a shocking twist ending. The anthology horror film, based on a stage play by the film’s co-writers and co-directors, Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, translates well to the big screen. The staginess of the source material steeps the film in an uncanny atmosphere, where the secrets of the past bleed into the present. Actual ghosts might not be real, but the memories we repress are, and they can haunt us in ways we might not expect.

A university professor is tasked with investigating three unsolved cases of paranormal activity in Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson’s unsettling feature debut.
Ghost Stories is the feature debut of Andy Nyman (character actor, magician, and Darren Brown’s bestie) and Jeremy Dyson (the unseen forth member of The League of Gentlemen), both co-directing and penning the screenplay adaption of their hit 2010 stage play. Phewy, that’s a lot of time and work. And then some, as Nyman plays the lead character Professor Phillip Goodman, who specialises in parapsychology – (basically, the study of paranormal stuff like ghosts, telepathy, and spoon bending). But he’s a kind-hearted skeptic, exposing overly quaffed and fraudulent spiritual mediums, and more likely to offer a possessed child a sympathetic ear than brutally exorcise them.
The good professor’s non-believer status is thrown into question, when his long presumed dead TV hero and fellow supernatural investigator,...

Martin Freeman and Paul Whitehouse star in a collection of chilling tales
Adapted with slippery agility by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman from their hit 2010 play, this collection of spooky tales expands from its stage origins to fill every corner of the screen with malevolent threats. Nyman stars as Professor Phillip Goodman, a professional sceptic whose job it is to debunk the mysteries of the paranormal. Eyebrow permanently raised, he drives a vintage Jaguar around the country, trailing exhaust fumes and a faint whiff of superiority. Then he is challenged to investigate three cases.
Paul Whitehouse plays a chippy nightwatchman who spins a tale of terror in an abandoned asylum; a jittery teenager (Alex Lawther) has a demonic encounter when he takes his parents’ car; and Martin Freeman plays a broker whose well-appointed home is plagued by a poltergeist. Each nervy little segment works chillingly well on its own, but...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Not an anthology of complete short tales but the highlights from much longer stories only briefly sketched and left maddeningly unfinished. Barely a movie at all, more a tease of one. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): I didn’t love the stage play (but I had completely forgotten I’d seen it before I saw this)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
Paranormal debunker Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Commuter) is good at what he does. We can see that from the opening sequence of Ghost Stories in which he reveals a stage psychic — one of those leeches who feed off grief by purporting to speak to our beloved dead — to be a total charlatan in front of his audience.

It’s no easy undertaking adapting a stage play for the cinematic screen; but when the writers behind one of the most successful plays are behind the transformation of their own story, anything is possible. The brainchild of The League of Gentleman’s Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, Ghost Stories first appeared on the boards back in 2010 under a veil of secrecy. Audiences and critics were urged not to divulge secrets of the play and only images of scared witless audience members adorned the marketing material. After moving from Liverpool to London and going on tour in Australia, this thrilling British horror story – with a few minor adaptations – is finally hitting the big screen with some familiar faces.
