The Boston Horror Show is getting set for its one day run. The showing of four horror films will take place on January 24th, beginning at 2:00pm. The following films will show: Justin Benson's Spring, The Sins of Dracula, the zombie feature The Battery and Dys from director Maude Michaud. This film festival will run into the wee hours. A brief overview of three of the films is available here. Spring is a love story, set in mystery. A beautiful, young woman has a secret and it could be of the supernatural kind. As well, The Sins of Dracula is a satire on vampire films of the '70s and '80s. Finally, Dys is a zombie flavoured film. A flu-like virus is ravaging the city. A couple are forced to take refuge in their apartment, until the disease comes knocking. The terror begins in just a few days.

Montreal’s genre festival ran from July 17-Aug 6 and saw audiences of more than 129,000; its Frontières co-production market also drew a record attendance, up 30% on 2013.
With more than 129,000 people attending screenings and events over its 18th year, Fantasia International Film Festival co-director Mitch Davis (pictured) has marked the event as an “extraordinary” year.
Speaking to Screen, Davis was particularly pleased that the smaller films shone through.
“We showcased just over 160 feature films, which is more than our norm and is, frankly, no subtle number,” said Davis. “The worry in doing that is the chancing that certain so-called smaller films could somehow fall between the cracks.
“I’m thrilled to say that this didn’t happen. It’s often the smaller independent discovery titles that we have some of the strongest love for and we go the extra mile to make sure they stand out and even then, anything could happen. Happily, a good...

It's strangely fitting that the Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival premiered the same day as Toronto's first annual cold snap, and festival patrons were happy to cram into The Projection Booth's tiny lobby to escape the wind. Hiding from the cold isn't uniquely Canadian behavior, but when called upon to describe what it's like to be Canadian, it is an image that comes to mind, along with Mounties, beavertails and poutine.
Often, being "Canadian" is defined in contradistinction to the uber-nation just below us: the United States, I mean. We Canadians say it's cold because the weather in the States is milder. We say we're multicultural because we added an act to our Charter in 1988. But really, these things mean little in our day-to-day life in Canada. When I was a teen, being Canadian felt like a deficit of something; it meant driving to Buffalo to shop at T.

Montreal-based filmmaker Maude Michaud is one of the fastest rising talents on the indie horror scene. If you hang around here from time to time, you might have heard that after a string of award-winning short films, Michaud is preparing to shoot her first feature, a dark meditation on psychological terror called Dys-. But did you know that Michaud is also a life-long Halloween obsessive?
I recently persuaded Michaud to take a break from the business of shooting schedules and shot lists to kick back and answer a few questions about what she truly believes to be the most wonderful night of the year...
After seeing your all films, Maude, this almost seems like a silly question. But tell me, are you a fan of Halloween?
I'm crazy about Halloween! In my ideal world, Halloween would be 365 days a year! [laughs]
So that's a yes?
Seriously, I've always been obsessed with it,...

Planet Fury recently ran a piece titled "Ten Canadian Genre/Horror Filmmakers to Watch For," and while it was a fine overview of up-and-coming directors from America's neighbor to the north, one name was conspicuous in its absence: Montreal-based filmmaker Maude Michaud.
Over the last few years, Michaud has been going about the business of quietly building an estimable catalog of films that, though nominally horror flicks, might best be classified as Cinéma Fantastique. Since 2005, Michaud has co-produced an arthouse drama and written, directed, produced and shot eight dark, ambitious short films as well as a five-part documentary web series, all of which were lauded by critics and played extensively on the festival circuit.
It's true Michaud is still something of an indie darling, yet that's all the more reason she should've been included in a list of emerging filmmakers. But with production of her first feature, Dys-, set to begin later this year,...

When you look at Montreal-based writer/director Maude Michaud, you don't necessarily see a horror filmmaker. An ebullient young woman with a shock of red hair and a musical French-Canadian accent, Michaud seems more like a quirky art student than the creator of dark, often transgressive cinema. I recently sat down for an extended chat with the garrulous Ms. Michaud during which we covered a range of topics such as escaping reality through film, whether she's really a horror filmmaker and, of course, her "special squirrel genes."
Okay, Maude, let's deal with this up front. You are an extremely upbeat, cheerful person, but I think it's fair to say your flicks veer toward the dark side of the soul. How'd a nice girl like you get so twisted? I'm glad you are, but...

Excision
Written and Directed by Richard Bates Jr.
USA 2012 Fantasia imdb
There were two films at Fantasia this year that took me on trips that I didn’t want to go on. The first was the winner of Fantasia’s Satoshi Kon Award for Achievement in Animation The King of Pigs. The second was Excision. Both films are about outsiders in high school, bullying and school as hell. The difference is that The King of Pigs announces almost from its opening frames that this will not be a pleasant journey, while Excision promises a disturbing dream of a journey, only truly turning nightmarish in the final twenty minutes.
To put it another way, I quite enjoyed the trip that Excision was taking me on, until I reached its destination and I hated that arrival so much that it made me hate the journey – made me reevaluate and hate the entire film.

At age 16, when most of us are worrying about getting our driver's licenses, an aspiring filmmaker named Maude Michaud was getting busy establishing herself in the independent Canadian film world when she produced, wrote, directed and acted in her first short film, Finding Hope.
Since then, Michaud hasn't had time to look back as she's gone on to write, direct and produce over 15 short films and video projects under her Quirk Films production banner including several horror short films such as Red, T is for Toothpick, Snuff, The Portrait and Recessed.
Michaud also recently contributed to two horror anthology feature films called I Hate L.A. and Frankenstein Unlimited and is the mastermind behind the ongoing documentary web series Bloody Breasts: An Exploration of Women, Feminism, and Horror Films, which premiered online in April 2011.

So, you normally don't hear about what women are directing in horror, sci-fi, and fantasy? That's because other assholes don't write about it. Only this asshole does. And there's a lot of new films projects you'll want to check out, if you're a real fannerd.
Aside from German-language release Lollipop Monster by Franziska Riemann and Larysa Kondracki's thriller in mainstream theaters, The Whistleblower, there's a bunch of shit to check out this summer.
Also in theaters is director/writer Miranda July's fantasy film The Future (see our review) opening on August 5th, 2011. This is July's second feature as director, the first being Me and You and Everyone We Know, which everyone who loves arty movies said was amazing. There's a talking cat and romance and a goregous beauty to The Future. Watch the stunning trailer:

What began as a feature-length documentary two years ago has now evolved into a webseries about women and horror films directed by Montreal filmmaker Maude Michaud, debuting April 3rd, 2011.
When we first reported on the making of Bloody Breasts, interviews were still being conducted. Now, Michaud has changed the way we'll experience her exploration of the intersection of gender and horror films.
The first episode is titled “Women love horror?” and features interviews with directors and festival owners such as , Devi Snively, Reyna Young, Shannon Lark, Katt Shea, Kier-La Janisse, Denise Gossett, Heidi Martinuzzi and Elisabeth Fies.
A new webisode will be released each month on the official website for free starting tomorrow. We can't wait! Bloody Breasts is bound to be a scholarly, well-made take on a fascinating subject.

It's time for the big reveal, my friends. As promised, embedded below is Jen and Sylvia Soska's new PSA for the Massive Blood Drive. And embedded within this video is the actress they've chosen to star in American Mary, their sure-to-be-shocking follow-up to last year's absolutely-was-shocking Dead Hooker in a Trunk.
After a grueling search that took them from the hills of Hollywood to the canyons of Manhattan, the Twisted Twins finally found their Mary in their very own backyard. I'm excited to announce that talented Canadian actress Katharine Isabelle is the woman who will bring American Mary to life.
While I'm sure you all remember Isabelle from the 2000 film Ginger Snaps, you probably don't realize that she's more than a scream queen. In the years since that classic slice of Canadian horror was released, Isabelle has established a solid career as a well-rounded, hard-working character actress. But this...

Do you know what 'scopophilia' is? Be honest.
It means 'the love of watching'. But it isn't really pervy unless you apply it to sex (or death).
Horror director Maude Michaud's new sexually charged supernatural thriller Red is about voyeurism and snuff films, and will be released in February, 2011 in honor of Women in Horror Recognition Month, of which we are staunch supporters.
The Montrealean short film stars Cameron Hartl, newcomer Olga G., scream queen Isabelle Stephen and includes a special appearance by Viscera founder Shannon Lark. Watch the teaser!

Review by Maude Michaud
Leslie, My Name Is Evil, is not a horror film, but it is a film that horror fans can appreciate for the same reasons that a mainstream audience might not. It has been getting a lot of press recently, especially since John Waters publicly expressed his outrage at the film, which might be misleading as to what exactly is so shocking about it. Also, reviews are mixed in a 'love it or hate it' way; I personally loved it and will try my best to demystify the common misconceptions about the film...
First off, Leslie, My Name Is Evil does not claim to be an accurate historical film; rather it falls in the 'let's take an historical event/person and add a fictional story around it to retell it in a different way' category.

Review by Maude Michaud
Anyone who’s familiar with the films of Izabel Grondin knows she often tackles disturbing subjects matter. Fantasy, her latest short film, is no exception. The premise is straightforward: a man and a woman meet through an ad to fulfill a particular fantasy. Revealing what that fantasy is would destroy most of the mystery and tension of the first act, so I’ll refrain from doing so. I’ll just say that it involves something that is unpleasant for most of us, women...
From the start, there is an aura of unpleasant sensuality. We know something bad is going to happen, yet our inner voyeur urge compels us to watch as we are granted access to the small room where the two main characters play out their fantasy. There is a strong fetishist tone to the film,...
