Even if you walked away from "The Super Mario Bros." disappointed in the flimsy story, there's one element that succeeded in spite of the movie's shortcomings: Jack Black as the diabolical villain Bowser. The "School of Rock" star brought his magnificent voice to the spike-shelled bad guy who has always been tormenting Mario, Luigi, Peach, the Mushroom Kingdom, and beyond. Black even got to belt out a ballad about Bowser's love for Peach in a scene-stealing musical sequence that is easily the best part of the entire movie. Now, he's gearing up to join another promising video game movie.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Pictures, Vertigo, and Legendary are close to starting production on the "Minecraft" movie, adapting the hit sandbox world video game from Mojang Studios, and Jack Black is taking one of the lead roles alongside "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa.

It's so weird to write the phrase "Rob McElhenney's Minecraft movie" and actually have it be a factual statement and not a bizarre fever dream, but it's true — the creator, star, and writer of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is actually directing a movie based on the mega-popular video game.

If the Minecraft movie is even half as popular as the video game, then Mojang will have a true, ahem, blockbuster on its hands. As anticipation builds for Minecraft's silver screen debut, we've decided to dig around for some more information.
From potential release dates and budgets, to storylines, directors and producers, here's everything we know about the Minecraft movie so far.
What's the Minecraft movie all about?
Plot details are thin on the ground, but Mojang COO Vu Bui told The Guardian that it will tell one of the countless possible stories from Minecraft's build-it-yourself game world. "When coming up with a story, we want to make sure it is just a story within Minecraft, as opposed to the story within Minecraft," he said.
Elaborating on his comments, Bui said that the company doesn't want to discourage players by coming up with an official story of the Minecraft universe.

Vu Bui, COO of Mojang, announced on Twitter Tuesday that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and co-creator Rob McElhenney will direct a movie based on the very, very popular video game Minecraft. Before you scoff at Hollywood's need and ability to make everything into a movie, remember that over the course of its short history, Minecraft has built quite a rich world for itself — it's not like they are making an emoji movie, or something. Oh, wait.

Many Minecraft video creators have been on edge the last few months, believing that changes surrounding the game’s studio of origin, Mojang, only foreshadow a tighter grip on licensing rights. In an interview with The Guardian, Bui assures the YouTube community the studio will stick to the approach outlined early on by the game’s creator Notch (who recently announced his departure from Mojang). Since the game’s inception, Notch allowed YouTube creators to upload any Minecraft footage and assets they wanted, without having to ask permission or provide Mojang a share of the ad revenue from the videos. “We have a whole slew of people who are making their entire living just off making videos about Minecraft.
