As timely as last night’s episode of “ESPN Sports Center,” and as riveting as a well-crafted tick-tock suspenser, “National Champions” adroitly avoids most of the pitfalls common to conventional “message movies” by raising and debating issues in the context of a solid and involving drama that can be enjoyed even by people who couldn’t tell an offside kick from a cheerleader’s cartwheel. It’s intent on exposing the inner workings of college football, but don’t expect a lot of gridiron action here. Except for a few — very few — highlight clips sprinkled here and there, the focus remains on the interactions of players, coaches, media scrums, well-heeled boosters, freelance fixers, and NCAA movers and shakers during the countdown to the fictional Snickers College Football Championship.

If recent memory serves, it’s tough to put a play onscreen without it feeling like a play onscreen. Hit films from last year like “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami” featured stellar performances, but struggled to break out of their singular location narratives. “Tick Tick Boom” chose to embrace the artifice and shoot obvious theater sets, and basically no one can compete with the way Steven Spielberg’s camera dances in the new “West Side Story.” While the dramatic conflict is ripe in “National Champions,” a timely sports drama based on the play by Adam Mervis, the movie fails to rise above its weighty premise. Still, with complex characters and fantastic performances, “National Champions” offers a vital take on a developing issue.

National Champions stars Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk and Selma), Academy Award winner J. K. Simmons, Alexander Ludwig (Lone Survivor), Lil Rel Howery, Tim Blake Nelson, Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, and Emmy Award winner Uzo Aduba.
Three days before the college football national championship game, star quarterback LeMarcus James (Stephan James) and teammate Emmett Sunday (Alexander Ludwig) ignite a player’s strike declaring they won’t compete until all student-athletes are fairly compensated. With billions of dollars at risk and legacies on the line, the stakes could not be higher.
Now, with only hours until kickoff, the head coach (J.K. Simmons) and various power brokers must race against the clock to protect or destroy the prevailing collegiate athletics system.

To mark the release of 21 Bridges on 30th March, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) stars in STXfilms’ 21 Bridges, an action thriller produced by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (Avengers: Infinity War) and directed by Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones). Thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers, a disgraced NYPD detective (Boseman) uncovers a massive and unexpected conspiracy. As the night unfolds, lines become blurred on who he is pursuing, and who is in pursuit of him.
When the search intensifies, extreme measures are taken to prevent the killers from escaping Manhattan as the authorities close all 21 bridges to prevent any entry or exit from the iconic island. Boseman and Logan Coles will also produce the film, with Mike Larocca serving as executive producer. The screenplay for 21 Bridges is written by Adam Mervis with revisions by Matt Carnahan.

Black Panther‘s Chadwick Boseman stars in this New York-set thriller produced by the Russo Brothers. Fast-paced and impressively acted, it’s a pleasingly old-fashioned thriller, providing you can side-step the occasional plot hole.
Directed by TV veteran Brian Kirk, 21 Bridges centres on a drug heist perpetrated by two small-time crooks (Stephan James and Taylor Kitsch) that goes badly wrong, leaving 8 cops dead at the scene. Theorising that the culprits will need to stay in Manhattan to get rid of their drugs, homicide detective Andre Davis (Boseman) is given until 5am to chase them down, with all traffic routes out of the city (i.e. the area within the 21 Bridges of the title) shut down until then.

Once upon a time, a movie like 21 Bridges was known as a “programmer” for the bigger film studios. A thriller with an established star at the center and a digestible runtime, released in between tentpoles to generate some solid, if not stratospheric, box office receipts. Not surprisingly, this kind of mid-budget project barely exists on the big screen anymore. And what a shame.
Directed by television veteran Brian Kirk, 21 Bridges follows brooding detective Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman) as he shuts down the island of Manhattan (including the bridges!) in the wee small hours of the morning to hunt a pair of cop-killing thieves. One of them is a tactical kill machine (Taylor Kitsch), while the other (Stephan James) is too smart to be in this position. As the chase burns on towards sunrise, the plot thickens. Soon, Davis is not sure who of his brothers and sisters in blue he can trust.

“Frozen II,” Disney’s follow-up to the pop culture phenomenon “Frozen” from 2013, brought in $8.5 million at the box office in Thursday night previews beginning at 6 p.m. It opens on over 4,300 screens this weekend.

For those who discovered Chadwick Boseman in the role of “Black Panther,” it’s about time the actor showed audiences what else he’s capable of. Sure, Boseman was back on the big screen a few months later in “Avengers: Infinity War” — but Marvel obviously underestimated his potential, giving Boseman far too little to do, then snapping him away for most of the sequel. Now, with “21 Bridges,” the actor who’d previously shown such potential as Jackie Robinson (in “42”) and Thurgood Marshall (“Marshall”) gets a chance to branch out, proving what someone of his caliber can do for an otherwise routine police thriller.

Deep in the basement of a swanky Brooklyn restaurant, stacked up high in a walk-in freezer, is a bounty: kilos and kilos of uncut cocaine, just waiting to be taken. At least, that’s the hope of small-time crooks Ray (Taylor Kitsch) and Michael (Stephan James), who arrive at said restaurant late one night, eager to make off with some coke, sell it to the crime boss who hired them for the gig, and move on with their lives. Exploring what it’s like to be a black cop in conflict, especially in the #BlackLivesMatter era, has become popular fodder for filmmakers. But while it’s an interesting topic to pursue, the films that have dared to do so have been unsatisfying.

‘Dolemite Is My Name’ Writer Larry Karaszewski Recalls 10-Year Journey to Make Rudy Ray Moore Biopic
“Harriet” writer-director Kasi Lemmons was in a reflective mood at Tuesday night’s “Behind the Scene” event at the Formosa Cafe in West Hollywood, sponsored by the Writers Guild of America West.
The biopic, starring Cynthia Erivo as slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman, has been receiving buzz since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s Lemmons’ fifth movie in 22 years, going back to “Eve’s Bayou.”
“To make movies, I have to have that incredible focus,” Lemmons explained. “So Harriet was my anchor. She’s easy to love.”
“I wanted to do a movie that felt big even if it wasn’t and I wanted to do with the scope it deserved,” she added. “I wanted to research, feel who she was and bring all that detail into it. At first, I didn’t really understand the textures of Maryland and I didn’t get that it was a...

“I wanted to do a movie that felt big even if it wasn’t and I wanted to do with the scope it deserved,” she added. “I wanted to research, feel who she was and bring all that detail into it. At first, I didn’t really understand the textures of Maryland and I didn’t get that it was a...

Exclusive: Stx and Agbo are moving their Chadwick Boseman-starrer 21 Bridges from September 27 to November 22 on the release date calendar.
The Brian Kirk-directed cop thriller, which also stars Sienna Miller, Stephan James, Keith David, Taylor Kitsch and J.K. Simmons, is stepping into a Thanksgiving corridor and a weekend where the other films are the Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers movie A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, Frozen 2 and the Reed Morano-directed revenge thriller Rhythm Section from Paramount. But it moves out of a crowded September field and away from the R-rated Joker, which Warner Bros opens October 4.
The decision was made after 21 Bridges got a strong response when its trailer was included in the Hall H Comic-Con panel where Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo unveiled their early slates under their Agbo banner. Boseman, among the stars of that all-time top-grossing film, in 21 Bridges plays an embattled...

The Philly Kid
Stars: Wes Chatham, Devon Sawa, Sarah Butler, Neal McDonough, Michael Jai White | Written by Adam Mervis | Directed by Jason Connery
Upon seeing the title of this movie, I thought it was just going to be some lame Rocky knockoff. (A Rockoff?) Pleasantly enough, however, The Philly Kid stands its ground as a movie all its own, albeit one that has plenty of The Italian Stallion and The Fighter in ts DNA.
The story’s pretty simple, and told simply: an Mma fighter lands himself in jail on a manslaughter charge after accidentally killing a mugger. Upon his parole, he’s forced to take part in cage fighting matches to make ends meet and save his friend from getting macked by loan sharks. It goes right until it goes wrong, there’s a girl, there’s some bloody fight scenes and, of course, a good couple of training montage.
