As the hunt for the next James Bond continues, many have weighed in with their dream casting, with names like Idris Elba, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Paul Mescal circling the role. For some, the role is overdue to be given to somebody other than a white British dude. But what about a female Bond? Well, the idea has been shot down across the board, most recently by the son of the franchise’s most consistent 007.
In a new interview, Roger Moore’s son, Geoffrey, suggested he’s not actively against a woman playing a vital role in the franchise but that it would be impossible for there to be a female Bond, saying the code number is assigned only to James himself. “Then it’s no longer James Bond,” and thus no longer a James Bond movie. “I mean, she could be 006, 008, or 009…Maybe there will be a ‘From the filmmakers...

Cannes frequently gets criticized for the paucity of Latin American representation in the main competition, so it was widely assumed that the new feature from festival veteran Amat Escalante, the 2013 best director winner for Heli, would be guaranteed a spot. Sad to report that watching Lost in the Night (Perdidos en la noche), it’s easy to see why it was shuffled off to a sidebar. The Mexican filmmaker moves out from the shadow of his former mentor, Carlos Reygadas, with his most accessible work to date in this revenge thriller, which is engrossing enough but also a bit meandering and underpowered.
Escalante’s fifth feature takes its cues more from his experience in television on Narcos: Mexico than from his previous big-screen work, which could in theory bring him to a wider audience. But it lacks the tight cohesion of that series at its best, and softens the jarring intensity,...

The search for the next James Bond continues, but Ana de Armas knows exactly who she would pick to play the secret agent. Of course, Ana de Armas has experience with the franchise as she played CIA agent Paloma in No Time to Die. While sitting down with Wired alongside Chris Evans to promote Ghosted, the actress was asked who should be the next Bond, and she replied… Paul Mescal.
Wired: Do you have someone you’d want to be the next Bond?
Chris Evans: I’ll do it.
Ana de Armas: Do you?
Evans: I thought you were going to say the next Bond girl. The joke would’ve been funnier then. Then you just said Bond.
De Armas: I think Paul Mescal should be the one.
Evans: Paul Mescal is great. I’m a big Aaron Taylor-Johnson guy.
Paul Mescal has a big career ahead of him...

Since her brief (and stunning) cameo in “No Time To Die,” Ana de Armas has been candid about what she thinks about the “James Bond” franchise. So, more women like her Paloma, perhaps?

Since her breakout roles in "Blade Runner 2049" and "Knives Out," Ana de Armas's star has ascended quickly. Over the years, she's played Bond girl Paloma in "No Time to Die" and Marilyn Monroe in the controversial movie "Blonde," a performance that garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the 2022 Oscars. She's also starring alongside Chris Evans in "Ghosted," a hybrid thriller-romance that hits Apple TV+ on April 21, 2023. Yet despite her high-profile persona, she's continued to remain low-key about her personal life over the years.
She has had one highly publicized relationship, though, with none other than Ben Affleck. The pair costarred in "Deep Water," an erotic thriller based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, which premiered on Netflix in 2020. In the movie, she and Affleck play Vic and Melinda Van Allen, a husband and wife who resort to dangerous mind games to keep their marriage interesting.
