From The Good The Bad And The Ugly.Ca, Sneak Peek 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in director Michael Mann's new thriller "Blackhat", starring Chris Hemsworth, Wei Tang and Viola Davis:
Michael Stevens For 'The Good':
"In director Michael Mann's "Blackhat", furloughed convict 'Nick Hathaway' (Hemsworth) with American and Chinese partners, hunts down a high-level cybercrime network connecting Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Jakarta.
"Mann delights in exploring CG 'digital trails', plunging into physical networks, following power surges while mapping out a glowing high-tech world, in contrast to the grimy digs used by a sweaty, terrorist hacker.
"Thor" actor Hemsworth, looking every inch an action star, knows how to use a gun (as opposed to a hammer) and effortlessly takes out gaggles of baddies, using 'MacGyver'-like prison smarts to street-fight his way out of confrontations.
"Actress Wei Tang as 'Chen Lien', is also good,...

One of the unexpected controversies this week was that Harry Gregson-Williams, one of the credited composers on "Blackhat," took the Michael Mann-directed cyber-thriller to task.
The composer had worked on the score of the film for several months, and was aware Mann had hired others before and after his work. Yet in a Facebook posting earlier this week, one which has since been deleted, he reportedly expressed shock and displeasure that the final film "contains almost none of my compositions... I was not the author of most of what is now in the movie."
Variety got in touch with Mann about the posting and here's his response: "Harry's a talented composer whose music needed editing and remixing to fit the very contemporary subject and ambitions of my picture. He was one of (several) composers who contributed to the score - along with Atticus and Leo Ross, Ryan Amon and Mike Dean.

Elysium features some impressive technology that not only includes improved health care (who doesn’t want to lay down in one of those “fix everything” beds?), but also features extraordinary Bluetooth range (allowing you to easily make calls from space to earth) plus weapons, shields, and exoskeletons not to be trifled with. But perhaps the most remarkable form of technology related to Elysium happened through YouTube and Skype. Composer Ryan Amon created the score for Elysium which features a captivating mixture of found sounds and instrumentation, but more notable is the fact that this was Amon’s first time composing for a feature film. Hailing from the world of film trailers, Amon was certainly familiar with the film world, but it was actually one of these trailer tracks (as posted on YouTube) that caught director Neill Blomkamp‘s eye (and ear) and caused him to reach out to Amon. The Society of Composers and Lyricists hosted a...

Here at Sound on Sight (and, by extension, Sordid Cinema), we often complain about the faceless, semi-identical blockbusters that ruin our moviegoing experiences for much of the summer and make us wish we’d stick off the beaten path for good. But a few years back, writer-director Neil Blomkamp managed to stick out from the pack with the relatively low-budget District 9, which led Edgar, Ricky, Simon, and guest Josh Spiegel to hope that his follow-up,Elysium, might prove to be another auteurist exception. After they reveal whether or not that was the case, they take on one of the year’s most divisive movies, Nicolas Winding Refn’s ultraviolent art-thriller Only God Forgives.

Recently I caught up with Ryan Amon, who’s composed the score for Elysium. This is an extended interview and we shot the breeze for around 20 odd minutes. Ryan covers alot of ground in the chat including what its like working with Neill Blomkamp (he worked “blind” on the score) and how Blomkamp chose Ryan over everybody else. He also speaks about his work process and plenty more (including District 10), so grab the interview on iTunes by clicking here. Elysium
Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Cast: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley
Running Time: 1 hrs 49 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 9, 2013
Plot: In 2154, the extremely wealthy live in an exclusive floating space station called Elysium where there is no crime or sickness. After being exposed to deadly radiation at work, a secondary citizen on an dystopic Earth (Damon) leads a charge to get up to Elysium with hopes of changing the paradise’s selfish health care system. He is pursued by the bossy leader of Elysium security Delacourt (Foster) who hires a ruthless sleeper agent named Kruger (Copley) to take him down.
Who’S It For? If you liked Blomkamp’s previous science-fiction actioner District 9, then this movie might be of some fun to you at the very least. If Obamacare bothers you, Elysium probably will too.
Expectations: Blomkamp’s previous District 9 was a bit overrated in my book,...

The creation of the Elysium soundtrack was unconventional from the start. Director Neill Blomkamp found composer Ryan Amon on YouTube, e-mailing the then-Bolivia-based musician, who was working on scores for movie trailers, with a simple question, "Is this you?" and a link to one of Amon's early tracks, posted on the site. Story: 'Elysium' Premiere “I had to Google ‘Neill Blomkamp’ because I didn’t recognize his name, which is really embarrassing now,” Amon told Wired, adding that he was sure the message was a prank from one of his friends. But he responded "just in case.

When Neill Blomkamp’s debut feature, District 9, arrived in 2009, it felt like one of the single most exciting moments in recent film history. This was science-fiction with a voice, science-fiction with a purpose, and science-fiction with an utterly singular, immediately gripping style. A genre co-opted by Hollywood blockbusters, with the same small set of narrative and visual parameters churned out over and over again ad naseum, had been forcefully reclaimed by a filmmaker with a deep, passionate understanding of what science-fiction can achieve, and fans and filmgoers rewarded that vision with universal critical and commercial success. For at least the briefest of moments, wickedly smart and endlessly thrilling science-fiction with a social conscious was popular again, and that was a tremendously invigorating moment to live through as a lover of cinema.

The email was unexpected and short--a single sentence: "Is this you?"--with a YouTube link and a signature from a name Ryan Amon didn't recognize: Neill Blomkamp. "It's a little bit embarrassing," Amon says of his first reaction to the message: "I had to Google his name!" When he did so, of course, he found the up-and-coming South African-born director who had catapulted to international acclaim with his 2009 film "District 9." (Our "Elysium" review and roundup here.) Amon was sure it was a joke. "I didn't have any experience in film scoring or any connections in that world," he says. But it wasn't a prank, and on a Skype interview with the director soon after, Amon quickly realized Blomkamp hadn't reached out about just another commercial, the director was calling about "Elysium," his sci-fi actioner set in a 22nd century Earth of haves and have nots. A classically-trained pianist who went...

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

One of our most anticipated movies still left to see this summer is Neill Blomkamp's Elysium with Matt Damon, out in theaters this August. As a big fan of composers, I always keep an eye on who's scoring what, but interestingly the one on Elysium isn't one I recognize - Ryan Amon. However, the Hollywood Reporter published a piece with a brief introduction to the composer, who created an "organic" and "nontraditional" score for the new sci-fi movie and admits that, "I haven’t done anything before this," but Blomkamp knew that, and that's why he chose him. I really like this choice already, I'm just anxious to hear some of his score. There isn't much revealed in the THR piece that we don't know about Elysium from the first teaser trailer already, but it's interesting to hear anyway. Ryan Amon is an up-and-coming composer whose only other work was for trailers,...
