Patti Smith isn’t one to get cabin fever, but this past year has been the exception, as the pandemic left her grounded in her home city. “I haven’t left New York in over a year, which is the longest I’ve been rooted since my children have grown,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I’m not used to being rooted in one place. But I’ve spent most of my time writing.”
Now that the world is in the process of reopening, the globe-trotting artist and musician is ready to get back onstage.

Patti Smith has launched a new weekly newsletter via Substack.
In an intro letter, Smith said she hoped to use the newsletter to “form an inter-connective body of work for a responsive community.” She plans to post “weekly ruminations, shards of poetry, music, and musings on whatever subject finds its way from thought to pen, news of the mind, pieces of this world, free to all.”
There will also be a subscriber tier, through which Smith will release a new serial, The Melting, every Tuesday (the first few installments will...

It felt like church. Sure, more of a nondenominational, Unitarian-Wiccan gathering rather than a holyroller revival. After all, we were gathered in the Brooklyn Museum Beaux-Arts court — with its dramatic skylight and brass chandelier — on a gorgeous March afternoon that felt like spring. That felt like hope.
When Patti Smith and Tony Shanahan entered the space, applause from the 40-plus in attendance echoed throughout the atrium. As she explained, March 9th marked three “anniversaries” for her: the passing of Robert Mapplethorpe (who died on March 9th, 1989); the day she met her husband,...

Patti Smith performed a spare and tender cover of Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush” on The Tonight Show Thursday.
Smith opened the performance with a short poem, in which she enumerated the chaos engulfing the world, while still ending on a hopeful note: “Yet I still keep thinking that/Something wonderful is about to happen/Maybe tomorrow/A tomorrow following a whole succession of tomorrows.”
As she brought the verse to a close, musician Tony Shanahan began playing “After the Gold Rush” on keys and Smith proceeded to...

The annual Tibet House benefit is a New York City musical tradition, always well-curated by composer and downtown arts ambassador emeritus Philip Glass. The organization’s mission is to preserve, protect, promote and advance Tibetan culture — and with its focus on peace (inner and outer), meditation, healing and happiness, that mission couldn’t be more timely. So the event, billed as the 32nd annual (give or take a few; no one seems to recall exactly), was especially welcome this year. And as usual, the music captured the spirit of the moment.

Patti Smith has never shied away from life’s tragic side. But when she calls up Rolling Stone in October, she’s in an upbeat mood.
“On the road, they have these LG televisions and when you turn them on, it says: Life Is Good. I love that,” Smith says. “Actually, I say it out loud when I turn it on: ‘Life is good.’ Because there’s a million reasons why we can say that things are terrible in the world, but when you get down to it, you know,...

Patti Smith held her daughter Jesse Paris Smith’s hand as she walked onto the small stage of the Minetta Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village on Monday night. Rather than the rock & roller, she appeared as the sweet mother, long silver hair plaited into two braids, a woman meant to deliver wisdom. It was the final night of Patti Smith: Words and Music, an intimate performance that included poetry, passages from her two critically acclaimed memoirs — Just Kids and M Train — and nine songs spanning more than 40 years of creative output.

Two chords of Patti Smith’s brilliant and multifaceted career harmonize and ring out in Patti Smith: Words And Music, a three-night-only Off Broadway production that, like the show uptown starring her old Jersey pal and “Because the Night” cowriter, combines storytelling with well-chosen samples of a 40-year-plus rock & roll repertoire.
The performances (the third and final is set for tonight) are being recorded by Audible, the Amazon audio books division that has made Greenwich Village’s Minetta Lane Theatre its home base for public recordings as varied as these evenings with Smith and an upcoming star-packed reading of a new Billy Crystal play.
Whether reading short excerpts from her award-winning memoir Just Kids or recounting some wonderfully shaggy and moving anecdote about loved ones she’s lost – husband Fred “Sonic” Smith and photographer friend Robert Mapplethorpe, chiefly – Smith creates an immediate and intimate rapport with her audience. First-night jitters...

Director Stephen Sebring will premiere his second documentary about punk icon Patti Smith tonight at the Tribeca Film Festival. “Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band” bows at New York City’s Beacon Theatre as one of the festival’s special screenings. A decade ago, Sebring’s feature debut, “Patti Smith: Dream of Life,” picked up a cinematography award out of Sundance before earning a Primetime Emmy nomination following its PBS “P.O.V.” broadcast.
Executive produced by Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine, “Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band” captures one of the final concerts of the 40th-anniversary tour celebrating Smith’s first album, “Horses.” The venue was Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theater, in January 2015. In the trailer, posted Monday and filmed in a muted palette consisting of much black-and-white footage, Smith growls her song “Land.” She is also seen brushing her teeth before showtime, hopping around onstage, and whipping imaginary stallions during that song’s chorus.
