Netflix has in many ways hijacked the industry, and for the most part, they have a specific type of K-dramas that work on the platform; however, in 2023, we’ve seen them bring in more and more shows in the Netflix original category that venture into the typical K-drama atmosphere. My Demon is reminiscent of the old fantasy...

Without any further delays, let’s get straight into the shows you...

When it’s all said and done, historians may look back on 2022 as the year TV’s bubble finally burst. The industry’s collective reevaluation of streaming is already leading to tighter budgets and “moderated” spending. Networks that once competed in the originals space are now pretty much out of the game. Broadcast continues to bank on sports and reality TV. If these trends continue, the scripted TV count could recede to, well, not reasonable levels — we’re still facing hundreds of series every year for the foreseeable future — but perhaps an output that doesn’t feel quite so crushing.

Exclusive: Filippo Scotti, the Italian actor known for his critically acclaimed breakout role in the Paolo Sorrentino film The Hand of God, has signed with Artist International Group for management.
The 2021 drama set in 1980s Naples had Scotti playing Fabietto, a football-loving kid whose uncertain but promising future as a filmmaker is shaped when a family tragedy strikes. While the 22-year-old had merely a few credits when he was picked to star in Sorrentino’s autobiographical film for Netflix, the project propelled him into international recognition. When it made its world premiere at the 78th Venice Film Festival, he found himself recognized with the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Emerging Actor.
The up-and-coming actor is currently featured in Prada’s Men’s Fall Fashion 2022 campaign, alongside Oscar- and Emmy-winner Rami Malek, Jeff Goldblum, Damson Idris, Asa Butterfield and more.

After portraying Charles, Prince of Wales on the third and fourth seasons of “The Crown” and winning the 2021 Best Drama Actor Emmy for the latter, Josh O’Connor has passed the role on to Dominic West. That means that he won’t be eligible to collect a bookend trophy this year. However, two former champs – Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) and Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) — do have that chance. Scroll down to see our 2022 Emmy predictions for Lead Actor (Drama Series).
Brown is the only 2021 drama actor nominee who could return in 2022. “The shows we’re focused on, they’re all made with love, they’re all made by hand and we pour our hearts and souls [into them],” proclaims executive producer Michael Ellenberg about what keeps a producer up at night — not whether a show will be a success or a failure, but what if nobody cares? “The greatest fear,” he says about the prospect of a project getting lost in the noise of an overcrowded market. For our recent webchat, Ellenberg adds, “if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? You know, that’s the fear everyone has right now,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As the former head of drama at HBO, Ellenberg founded Media Res, an independent studio that develops prestige scripted content for multiple streamers and networks. Since branching out on his own in 2017, the producer has been busy, shepherding numerous high-profile projects,...

During his lengthy career as an agent, David Unger saw there was a future in representing actors from the growing international marketplace. That’s what led to the creation of the Artist International Group in 2019.
Judging by the success of everything from Shang-Chi and Lupin, to Parasite, Narcos, Squid Game, Money Heist and Fauda—and the flood of talent those projects introduced to Hollywood—the move has certainly been validated. Unger and other reps who have leaned into global talent management are finding their clients in high demand, thanks to the need by streamers with stagnant domestic subscription growth to make indigenous series and films.
“I spent 25 years nurturing international voices, and they have never mattered more in this streaming economy,” says Unger, whose international sensibilities came from growing up in London and observing the business from that side of the pond. His father produced Don’t Look Now, and his...

Exclusive: Ukrainian-Canadian-American filmmaker Vadim Perelman has inked with Artist International Group for management.
Perelman made his directorial debut in 2003 with House Of Sand And Fog, which went on to be nominated for three Oscars including Best Actor Ben Kingsley, Best Supporting Actress Shohreh Aghdashloo and Best Original Score James Horner.
The pic, which also starred Jennifer Connelly, repped Perlman’s first screenplay credit. Drawn to the story, having been shaped by his own immigrant experience, Perelman adapted the screenplay alongside Shawn Otto from Andre Dubus III’s international bestseller of the same name. DreamWorks acquired domestic distribution rights and released the film to great critical acclaim.
Perelman’s second feature film, The Life Before Her Eyes, starred Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood. Also an adaptation, the pic followed a woman whose survivor’s guilt from a Columbine-like event twenty years ago causes her present-day idyllic life to fall apart.

Want to see the idea of the “period epic” shaken up? Look no further than “Pachinko.”
Hot off the success of the recent Season 1 finale (and Season 2 renewal), some of the cast and crew of the Apple TV+ hit sat down with IndieWire’s Steve Greene at the IndieWire Consider This Brunch today for a discussion about the hit series. The panel included director Justin Chon, stars Jin Ha and Minha Kim, and executive producers Theresa Kang-Lowe and Michael Ellenberg.
“Pachinko” is based on the New York Times-bestselling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee. It follows multiple generations of a Korean family who emigrate to Japan, jumping back and forth in time to tell their story over the course of a century.
The “century-spanning” nature of the story created major production challenges, but it also spurred the essential creative vision for the production team. It was important...

The multigenerational saga of Pachinko will continue at Apple TV+, which has renewed the family drama for a second season. The series comes from creator/showrunner Soo Hugh and executive producers Theresa Kang-Lowe and Michael Ellenberg.
The renewal comes before the season one finale, titled “Chapter Eight,” will be available to stream globally Friday on Apple TV+.
Pachinko, based on the 2017 bestseller by Min Jin Lee, stars Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung, Minha Kim, Lee Minho, Jin Ha and more. The drama follows four generations of a Korean immigrant family who fight to realize their dreams across Korea, Japan and America. The main protagonists are Zainichi Koreans, ethnic Koreans who came to Japan during Japanese colonial rule of Korea, and their descendants, who faced discrimination and marginalization. “Pachinko,” the new Apple TV+ drama series about a Korean immigrant family that spans generations, is earning widespread love from critics. The epic saga comes from the Min Jin Lee novel of the same name and centers on Sunja, who grows up in Japanese-occupied Korea, tracking her life through old age, as well as her family’s lives. Academy Award winner Yuh-Jung Youn stars as the older version of Sunja, in her first onscreen role since winning Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” The raves for Youn’s performance and the series as a whole might just make “Pachinko” the next Apple project to score with awards voters.

With Lee Min-Ho on our screens in Apple TV+'s "Pachinko," all feels right in the world again. The actor, who previously starred in hit K-dramas like "The King: Eternal Monarch," "Legend of the Blue Sea," and "Heirs," is now playing Hansu in "Pachinko" - a role that's quite a bit darker than those he's taken on in the past. Lee is a top actor in his home country of Korea and across Asia, and the Apple TV+ series will doubtless show an even wider audience exactly why that is. Now that your interest is piqued, you might want to get to know him better and find out a bit about his past - and who he's dated. Here's what to know.
Who Has Lee Min-Ho Dated?
As is the case for many top actors, it's regularly speculated that Lee is dating his costars, but the rumors rarely, if ever,...

Apple TV+’s newest drama Pachinko, based on the award-winning book by Min Jin Lee, offers poignant takeaways about family, survival and love. But, viewers should also expect to walk away with The Grass Roots’ “Let’s Live For Today” stuck in their heads.
The psychedelic anthem scores the series’ title sequence, which weaves together a visual tapestry with the past and present of Korea’s sprawling history. (You can watch it below.) As The Grass Roots sing of living and loving for today, age-worn images of Korean women and men in traditional wear lead to baby photos from the late 20th century, which transition into footage of a bustling Shibuya Crossing in Japan. A convergence of old and new, the high-energy opener is just one of the ways Apple TV+’s Pachinko highlights the link between the present and the generations that came before.

A mother tearfully packs her teenage daughter’s few belongings, sending her off to a new life in a strange land in 1931. This wrenching moment is intercut with a scene nearly 60 years later, when the daughter is now a wizened grandmother, packing to return to visit her native country of Korea. Such echoes are common in Pachinko, creator-producer Soo Hugh’s shimmeringly gorgeous and emotionally engrossing adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s acclaimed 2017 novel about Koreans displaced by the Japanese occupation of the early 20th century. The central character, played by three remarkable actresses over a roughly 70-year span, is Sunja, the only surviving child of peasant parents who operate a boarding house in a Korean fishing village. A carefree but observant youth (Yu-na Jeon), Sunja becomes a pensive, hardworking adolescent (Minha Kim) who allows herself to dream, falling under the spell of Hansu (Lee Min-ho), a smitten fish merchant...

Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg formed their own two-person film club during the pandemic.
“During the lockdown he encouraged me and I encouraged him, we found movies we had never seen before and we let each other know what they were,” Spielberg said. “So the lockdown was literally spent watching movies, getting on text and talking for hours about the film. He knows more about films than Martin Scorsese.”
Spielberg’s remarks came after “The Shape of Water” director honored him Saturday night at Lacma’s 10th annual Art + Film Gala at Lacma.
Spielberg admitted he was anxious about being recognized by a museum because he has never called himself an “artist.”
“I never know what to feel when people refer to me as an ‘artist’ or call what I make ‘art’ because I don’t think I’ve ever referred to myself in that way,” the “West Side Story” director said.

The final installment of director-screenwriter Ha Yoo’s “street series” trilogy (Once Upon a Time in High School and A Dirty Carnival the other two) entailed all the reasons to become a great film, both commercially and artistically. Elaborate story, based on actual sociopolitical conditions, a general theme that seems to produce, constantly, masterpieces all over the world, a cast that combined popularity with accomplished acting, stylized cinematography, action, violence, sex and a little of melodrama and politics. However, in the end the result was disappointing, at least according to the initial expectations.
The film takes place in the ’70s, in the Gangnam district of Seoul, where two orphan friends, Jong Dae and Yong Gi try desperately to earn their living by selling whatever they manage to find in the streets, including trash. Nevertheless, the money they earn is not even enough to heat the building they live in,...

The Korean Film Council (Kofic) is launching an initiative to promote the country’s acting talent on the world stage. It will roll out from March, ahead of the year’s major film festivals.
The Korean Actors 200 campaign, akin to the Shooting Stars operation backed by the European Film Promotion program, is described as a “methodical project” that sees the selection of 100 men and 100 women who represent the present and the future of Korean film.
Kofic says that the selection process takes into consideration the performers’ box office power over the last decade, awards earned at festivals in Korea and abroad, their contribution to independent cinema, and their participation in international projects.
A dedicated website will contain filmographies, new portrait photography, show reels, biographies and a list of particular characteristics and strengths for each. Portrait images will be supplied by two leading photographers Kim Jung-man and Ahn Sung-jin.
