A sex-obsessed writer reveals her many erotic encounters to a complete stranger in this shallow, unfunny comedy
A sex addict re-enacts every one of her 169 conquests on a road trip across America with a man she’s only just met – he’s got testicular cancer – in this shallow, dismally unfunny comedy from Nico Raineau. Brittany Snow does her best to make the character convincing but not only is the movie (clearly inspired by Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck) a comedy dead zone, it is virtually devoid of recognisably real human beings.
In a nicely tuned performance, Snow plays Darla, a cynical sex columnist sacked from her job on a magazine after being caught shagging an intern in the editor’s office. (The firing is nicely spiky: “You’re not the only nympho who can form a sentence.”) An earlier sexual harassment complaint means that Darla is forced to attend a sex...

The last place you’d expect to find a meet-cute is in the hallway between a sex addiction support group and a cancer support group. That’s where the paths of Darla (Brittany Snow) and Bailey (Sam Richardson) cross in the new rom-com Hooking Up. What ensues can be loosely defined as a sex comedy, but one that doesn’t rely on raunchy gimmicks.
Both Snow (Pitch Perfect), who also served as a producer on the film, and Richardson recently spoke with Den of Geek about making a sex positive comedy that also dives into the nuances and grey areas of sex addiction, and touches on themes of companionship and coping with hardships.
Hooking Up is now available on digital and on demand. Read on below for the full Q&a!

An elementary school classroom may seem an odd place to launch a romantic comedy that soon finds its protagonists coupling with abandon in a slew of quasi-public spaces. But in the rom-com “Hooking Up” — available digitally and on demand — that’s precisely where magazine writer Darla emerges from, having had an afterschool special with a stranger on a teeny desk.
Then again, a school proves perhaps too apt a location. There’s a rudimentary feel to “Hooking Up,” which stars Brittany Snow and Sam Richardson as a twosome who embark on a road trip with benefits. Genres often provide refuge to first-time feature filmmakers. Director Nico Raineau and co-writer Lauren Schacher hug the familiar beats of the form while rubbing up against its conventions with some naughty, sometimes endearing tweaks.
That school turns out to be a busy one. There’s a sex addiction group in one room and a cancer survivors’ gathering in another.

Even in trying times, a great movie can do wonders for you. The prospect of watching Sam Richardson and Brittany Snow in a romantic comedy already offered up some glowing potential, but nothing will prepare you for how wonderful this film is. A charming, funny, and sexy rom-com, Hooking Up even manages to get serious at times in a way that never betrays its core entertainment value. With terrific performances by Richardson and Snow, who display absolutely phenomenal chemistry, this is one of the year’s most pleasant surprises. Coming to VOD on Friday (an initially theatrical run is obviously out of the question right now), it deserves to find a place in your hearts. The film is a romantic comedy couched around a road trip. When Bailey (Richardson) and Darla (Snow) first meet, they’re in a school entering very different support groups. He’s a survivor of testicular...

Exclusive: Jordana Brewster, Vivica A. Fox, and Anna Akana are set for supporting roles in the indie film Bailey and Darla, which stars Brittany Snow and Sam Richardson. First-time feature helmer Nico Raineau directed the pic from a screenplay he wrote with Lauren Schacher.
The plot centers on Darla (Snow), a cynical reporter whose sex addiction is getting in the way of her sex column, and her evolving relationship with Bailey, a well-meaning sweetheart who’s been dumped by his fiancé Elizabeth (Akana) and learns he has testicular cancer (again). Together they embark on an impromptu cross country road trip, recreating Darla’s myriad trysts from state to state. She’s looking for a story and he’s looking for a last hurrah; what they find is something neither expected.

Writer and director Nico Raineau impressed me greatly last year when I had the chance to look at his latest action drama, Brix And The Bitch. It also earned the approval among festival crowds around the world, garnering eleven wins in the last two years, and this Valentines' Day, the shortfilm is finally releasing online for your viewing pleasure. Among those wins includes several Best Actress nods earned on behalf of actress Dre Swain who stars in the title role as an underground fighter held captive with only one way out, forcing her to make the toughest decision of her life. Swain shares her acclaim with award-winning actress, stuntwoman Alex-Marshall Brown, both of whom I've enjoyed covering on my own site between their respective acting...

With submissions ranging from countries like Italy and Nepal to as short as several minutes to feature length films, every aspect of storytelling has been covered within the 2015 Soho International Film Festival . It only seems fitting that the festival wraps up its sixth annual festival with a number of prominent presenters including The Avengers’ Robert Clohessy and Rescue Me’s James McCaffrey. With awards given to the best of the best at the festival, it was a great close to another successful year for the festival.
There was an even greater presence among the jurors of the festival, with people have worked as actors on shows like Dexter to writers and directors having worked on films like On Golden Years. The jurors included Emmy Award nominee journalist and educator Ernabel Demillo, or ABC Network Casting Head Marci Phillips. David Zayas, an actor on Gotham and Donna McKenna, a casting director and producer,...
