- Pablo Calvillo was born in Malinalco, a small, ancient town in Mexico where nature is still a fundamental part in everyone's life and growing process. His father, an architect specialized in ecological building, and his mother, a graphic designer, have influenced his work since he started drawing. Pablo moved to Mexico City to finish his lower academic and artistic education, and after finishing high school he worked as a freelance illustrator while he traveled around the world for a couple of years.
In May 2007 Pablo graduated from the Animation Program at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles where he created several short films combining different techniques such as 3D computer animation, film, video, and traditional 2D animation. Since then he has worked in several graphic design, animation, and film studios in Mexico, the Czech Republic, and the United States. Pablo has worked as a 3D Generalist, Animator, and Art Director for commercial and music video studios like Right Hemisphere Films, TDE, and National Television. He has also worked as a Previs and Layout artist in feature films like the Night Fisherman, and Astroboy.
At the same time he has been working on his personal films that have won several awards like the "Jules Engles" grant, the "Full CalArts Scholarship", the "Latin Cinemateca" award, and the "Super Hero" scholarship, an award in which he illustrated one of the comics for the 75th Anniversary of the Kellogg Foundation with 75,000 published copies in the U.S. His work has been screened in several film festivals and venues (i.e. LACMA, Stuttgart 2008 Int. Animation Fest., Platform Int. Animation Fest., UCLA's shorttakes Film Fest., Burning Man, Valencia Int. Film Fest. in Spain, Festival Internacional de Filmets, Barcelona, etc.), and featured in television shows in Mexico and the U.S. (i.e. Abrelatas, Canal 11, MTV, BFOC, etc.)
Pablo's most recent work includes a music video for Fever Ray and a couple of commercials for RedBull that he directed and created with a team of artists that under the MaliArts name have been working together for a couple of years on several projects. He is currently freelancing in Los Angeles while finishing "Mandorla", a film that combines live action and 3D computer animation and that plays with the Jungian concept of "The Shadow".- IMDb Mini Biography By: PABLO CALVILLO
