Any Andrew Garfield performance is to be cherished – the British actor never fails to deliver, bringing emotion and commitment every single time. And his next role will be a different kind of expression than we’re used to from the star. He’s leading the impeccable voice cast of Audible’s new audio drama production of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984, playing the role of Winston Smith as he navigates the repressive society governed by Big Brother. Empire has an exclusive early peek at the audio drama, with a clip that sees Winston being confronted by the terror that awaits those going into Room 101. Give it a listen here:
Beyond Garfield’s Winston, you also heard Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, with Cynthia Erivo as Winston’s romantic counterpart Julia. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the cast here – also in the production you’ll find Tom Hardy...

Andrew Garfield and Cynthia Erivo will lead Audible’s audio adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984.
The Amazing Spider-Man and Wicked stars will play Winston and Julia, respectively, alongside Fleabag’s Andrew Scott as O’Brien and Inception’s Tom Hardy as Big Brother. The audio adaptation will also feature an original score written by Muse front-man Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri, which will be performed by a 60-piece orchestra at Abbey Road studio.
Destiny Ekaragha (The End of the F***ing World) directs the Audible Original adaptation, which is described as staying “faithful” to the original text, while drawing in more of Winston and Julia’s romantic relationship. The Orwell Estate has authorized and endorsed the adaptation.
The classic novel, published in 1949, is set in an imagined dystopian future in which Winston and his colleague, Julia, are dissatisfied with their totalitarian government and look to make a change. However,...

“It’s absolutely clear, there is a real appetite for British independent cinema in France,” said artistic director Dominque Green.
Sasha Polak’s Silver Haze scooped the top prize at this month’s Dinard Film Festival, the French seaside festival that spotlights UK and Irish cinema for French audiences, that ran from September 27 to October 1.
Berlinale Panorama title Silver Haze won the Golden Hitchcock for best film. Polak’s feature reunites the Dutch filmmaker with UK actor Vicky Knight, after working together on Dirty God in 2019. It is loosely based on Knight’s own experience as a child, in which she survived an arson attack.

The End of the F***ing World executive producer Dominic Buchanan has written a six-page open letter revealing that he is “shattered” after being told by BAFTA that he cannot purchase a statue following the show’s triumph at the TV Awards last month.
The Channel 4 and Netflix drama, produced by Clerkenwell Films and Dominic Buchanan Productions, was a surprise big-winner on the night, scooping best drama series ahead of competition including The Crown. Naomie Ackie also took home the prize for best supporting actress.
“I was shocked, I cried; 8 years of this personal journey on this project and our show wins a BAFTA! I won a BAFTA! My name is on the TV screen as a winner!” Buchanan wrote in the letter, which can be read in full here.
But Buchanan said his delight turned to anguish when he was told that he could not purchase an award. This...

Reciprocating an exchange which saw Series Mania 2019 Co-Pro Pitching winner “Capturing Big Mouth” participate at this year’s Berlin CoPro Series, German project “Transitniki” will make the return trip to Lille next month, having been selected by Series Mania representatives in Berlin.
From Germany’s Rohfilm Factory, “Transitniki” is set in 1985, behind the Iron Curtain, and tracks groups of thrill-seeking young East Germans, feeling trapped in their own country, who find a way to enter the Soviet Union illegally using transit visas. There, they are able to satiate their desires for travel and adventure in Russia’s untamed wilds.
The series is written by an experienced trio of TV screenwriters in Heide Schwochow, Constantin Lieb and Christian Mackrodt. There is no one creator, no showrunner and no head writer. In fact, when producer Karsten Stöter was putting his writers’ room together, some told him his democratic methodology for screenwriting would never work.

This is a spoiler-free series two review (contains season one spoilers) based on the first four episodes.
Inside the pages of Charles Forsman’s The End Of The F***ing World comics, outsiders James and Alyssa will be forever where they were left – James shot by the police and Alyssa carving his name into her arm with a pin. Frozen between the gutters of Forsman’s drawings, they’ll never grow older than 17, never get jobs or go to university or get married. They won’t have to learn about responsibility or face the consequences of their bloody road-trip.
Lucky them.
TV Alyssa can’t say the same. In season two, which is now streaming on Netflix, she’s been broken out of the frame and much to her dismay,...

In the intriguing new trailer for The End of the F***ing World Season Two, Alyssa (Jessica Barden) moves emotionless through ordinary life while being trailed by a mysterious new character.
The dialogue-free clip, set to a brooding acoustic cover of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” by Graham Coxon, plays out as one extended montage. It picks up with Season One’s cliffhanger ending, showing teenagers Alyssa and James (Alex Lawther) as they recline on the beach at sunset; moments later, James appears bloodied on the sand.
Season One ended on a note of confusion.

Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 2 of “The End of the F***ing World” Wednesday, which featured Graham Coxon’s cover of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” And yes, the show used the song in pretty much the most depressing way you could possibly imagine.
In the 1-minute, 31-second video above, you’ll see an even-more-depressed-than-usual Alyssa (Jessica Barden) is getting married, though we don’t get to see to who. And she’s obviously still grieving the apparent death of her boyfriend James (Alex Lawther) at the end of Season 2. For those of you who were hoping that cliffhanger meant he could still be alive, looks like that’s not the case. And based on a telling image in the trailer of Alyssa looking at a bullet with “James” engraved on it, we’re concerned she’s now considering taking her own life.
Here’s the description for the second season,...

“The End of the F***ing World” became an unexpected smash hit on Netflix in January 2018 thanks to the breakout chemistry between its breakthrough actors Jessica Barden and Alex Lawther. The premise was simple and addictive: Lawther’s sociopathic James agrees to run away with Barden’s reckless Alyssa with the intent of killing her at some point, but their blossoming relationship complicates things. Braden and Lawther’s connection was irresistible, which is why “The End of the F***ing World” faces a challenge in its upcoming second season.
The first season of “The End of the F***ing world” ended with James attempting to save Alyssa’s life by running off to attract the attention of armed police officers chasing them down. As James runs across the beach being chased, his voiceover reveals that his relationship with Alyssa has shown him the value of what human connection means. The...

In late October of last year BAFTA announced their 2016 Breakthrough Brits cohort. It is the fourth such contingent spotlighted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, providing invaluable support and a host of possibilities for those on the programme.
We spoke exclusively to the ‘Class of ’16’ shortly after the announcement was made, and the sense of potential the programme offered was tangibly felt. Part of the great work done by BAFTA is in the guidance offered to the new generation of creative artists. It is an essential part of their work, as much as it is an essential part of our cultural identity.
Today we are continuing our ongoing coverage of the BAFTA Breakthrough Brits programme by finding out exactly what made the initiative so important to emerging talent.

In his nine years Hunter has been with them BAFTA has become much more outward facing, and they have focused on the charitable aim of championing creative excellence. Announcement coincides with the unveiling of six films by BFI graduates.
The UK’s Department for Education has announced it will invest $1.4m (£1m) of funding to support the BFI Film Academy in 2016-17.

The move came on the day that 66 young filmmakers from the BFI Film Academy unveiled six short films to British film industry figures including producers Alison Owen (Suffragette, Saving Mr. Banks), Faye Ward (Suffragette, Jane Eyre) and Duncan Kenworthy (The Pass, Love Actually).

The UK industry has something to celebrate about women in film - at least compared to more dismal stats in the Us.
Across 11 top territories in the global film industry, women make up an average of 7% of directors, 19.7% of writers and 22% of producers.
But in UK independent film, women number 27.3% of directors, while in the Us last year, only two women directed films in the top 100.
Among writers, the UK has 58.8% female screenwriters, compared to 11.8% in the Us.
In UK independent films, 37.9% of characters seen on screen are female, but that drops to 23.6% when the UK collaborates with the Us.
Those were some of the stats presented by Madeline Di Nonno, CEO of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender In Media as part of the Institute’s Symposium at BFI Southbank yesterday (Oct 8), presented with the BFI and Wftv.
