Rob Ford was always going to have his story come to the big screen one day. It’s just too juicy and larger than life. Somehow, the story of how Ford, the Mayor of Toronto, was finally caught up in a scandal that stuck, is brought to dull life in Run This Town. Instead of a riveting journalism procedural or an over the top political drama, we get things somewhere in between. The film thinks that it’s smarter than it is, more interesting than it is, and more important than it is. It all adds up to a major disappointment, especially if you saw the potential in this story. The movie is a drama about how the 2011 Rob Ford scandal came to be international news. At the beginning, we meet two of Ford’s top aides in Ashley (Nina Dobrev) and Kamal (Mena Massoud), who more or less run...

A24 is ready to milk the weekend with their new film First Cow from director Kelly Reichardt. The film isn’t about a presidential cow, but it is about a special bovine creature.
Set in the 19th century, the film follows a lone cook (John Magaro) as he travels west with a group of fur trappers. Out of all of them, he connects with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) and they collaborate on a lucrative business that hinges on the participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow. Through her distinct vision, she tells what seems like a peculiar story but is, in fact, a tale about America and the sensitive depiction of the friendship between two men. All the while, First Cow builds suspense in its own special way.

Questionable journalism and problematic civil service collide in “Run This Town,” writer-director Ricky Tollman’s dramatization of former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s final year in office.
Ben Platt plays a milquetoast stand-in for the actual journalists who exposed Ford’s transgressions in a film that collects too many characters and too few clear ideas on how to treat — or connect — the concentric circles around misbehaving politicians, their protectors or enablers, and members of the would-be media trying to do their job in an increasingly inhospitable economic climate.
Platt plays Bram Shriver, a recent college graduate and award-winning student journalist who lands an entry-level job at The Record, a print and online publication in Toronto. While his parents fret over his finances, Bram bemoans the listicle grunt work assigned by David (Scott Speedman), his editor, while gingerly seeking challenges doled out to senior reporters.

Back before Donald Trump took the idea of political controversy and pumped it full of steroids, one of the most shocking scandals in politics involved Rob Ford, the then-Mayor of Toronto. And in the film “Run This Town,” the Rob Ford scandal gets put under the microscope through the point-of-views of a journalist and the Mayor’s right-hand man.

"Everyone's story is always a good story until it's not." Quiver has released a second official trailer for Run This Town, an indie dramedy that premiered at the SXSW Film Festival about a year ago. The first trailer was very clever, this one is just as good. A young journalist and a young political aide become entangled in a larger-than-life political scandal as they struggle to navigate life in Toronto. Like all their friends, Bram and Kamal are struggling to climb the ladders at their respective workplaces: Bram at a newspaper, Kamal at City Hall. When Bram learns of a scandal involving Kamal's larger-than-life boss, he seizes the moment. Starring Ben Platt, Mena Massoud, Nina Dobrev, Scott Speedman, Gil Bellows, with Jennifer Ehle and Damian Lewis. I must admit - both trailers have me very intrigued to see this, got my attention. Here's the second trailer (+ new poster) for Ricky Tollman's Run This Town,...

There is much to admire but a lot to admonish in “Run This Town,” writer-director Ricky Tollman’s aggressively cluttered drama about ambitious millennials, circulation-famished editors, and other not-so-innocent bystanders who cross paths in Toronto during the scandal-rocked 2010-14 mayorship of Rob Ford.
It doesn’t help much that Tollman takes far too long during the rapid-fire crisscrossing of storylines throughout his movie’s first third before making it clear which individuals should be paid primary attention. And it doesn’t help at all that Mayor Ford — who looms large, literally and physically, despite his status as a supporting character — is played by a heavily latexed Damian Lewis in a less-than-convincing fat suit. Lewis so closely resembles Mike Myers’ Fat Bastard character in the “Austin Powers” franchise that it’s practically impossible to fully appreciate his spot-on portrayal of a man with an unstable id checked only sporadically by an image-conscious superego.

A superbly entertaining new thriller from Ricky Tollman, Run This Town offers a fictionalized account of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s well-documented issues battling addiction and megalomania. As a disclaimer, the story was largely broken by Robyn Doolittle of the Globe and Mail. Tollman’s fictionalization of the events focuses on Bram (Ben Platt), who writes listicles for a local paper while dreaming of making his way in the world. We’re first introduced to him when he finds out that because he didn’t register, he won’t technically be able to graduate from journalism school despite completing all course requirements.
Run This Town balances a fledgling Bram’s entry into the world of journalism with a story of Ford staffers, including aide Kamal (Mena Massoud) and new addition Ashley Pollock (Nina Dobrev), who operate a spin machine that keeps embarrassing details out of the news. It can...

Ansel Elgort is a star on the rise. Still fresh from his breakout turn in indie tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars, the up-and-comer has already teed up roles in both Billionaire Boys Club and Edgar Wright’s ensemble drama Baby Driver. Now, Elgort has been tapped to headline Bill Oliver’s new feature Jonathan.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Oliver will direct from a script he penned alongside Peter Nickowitz. Randy Manis and Ricky Tollman, meanwhile, are attached to produce with Neal Dodson executive producing.
But perhaps the most intriguing facet of Jonathan is that, in the vein of the Tom Hardy-fronted Legend, it presents a dual role for Ansel Elgort, who will portray two wildly different twin brothers. That means Bill Oliver’s feature will tell the story of “a successful architect who lives a normal life dictated by a strict routine. Jonathan’s twin brother John,...
