Now, here’s a crossover we did not know we needed!
The excitement for House of the Dragon season 2 is palpable. All brands are jumping onto the marketing bandwagon and benefitting from the vast popularity of the dragon-laden HBO show. While basketball certainly has no place in Westeros or King’s Landing, that did not stop NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal from meeting a majestic dragon.
Shaquille O’Neal Offers BBQ Chicken to a Dragon
We always knew how powerful and majestic the Targaryen dragons are, but we never anticipated that they would burn a popular NBA legend to a crisp. On the sports commentary show NBA on TNT, Shaquille O’Neal presented a culinary gift to a member of the House of the Dragon cast. It turned out to be none other than a dragon that perhaps thought the chicken was not well done.

One of the major turning points in Targaryen’s history was Aegon’s Conquest. Aegon I rose to power and decided to consolidate the seven kingdoms. Thus, he became the first king of the seven kingdoms and forged an Iron Throne. We already have a Game of Thrones spinoff around this in the works, and the writing seems to be going well.

Romania-based filmmaker and writer Mattson Tomlin is currently working on scripting Aegon’s Conquest. The show will dive into the historical events that made House Targaryen one of the most fierce and courageous families in the world. Though there is no dedicated book written on this significant event, Tomlin claimed that he is crafting the show based on the pages of Fire & Blood dedicated to this narrative. Set in George Martin’s massive World of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones has a vast and yet untapped spin-off potential. Apart from House of the Dragon, there have been countless ideas and projects in discussion over at HBO in the past few years, and one of the most prominent ones — Aegon’s Conquest — is already in early development, with George Martin being actively involved in it.
Aegon’s Conquest’s Writer Gives Update on the Project
Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin isn’t a stranger in the industry by any means. The Terminator franchise, Keanu Reeves’ Brzrkr, Robert Pattinson’s The Batman: Part Two — he’s working with many prosperous titles. But the one that specifically tickles Game of Thrones fans’ nerves is Aegon’s Conquest, the potentially upcoming prequel about the greatest Targaryen conqueror who created the Seven Kingdoms.

Author George R.R. Martin created the global phenomenon Game of Thrones when he wrote the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. Set in a medieval fantasy realm where Seven Kingdoms fight to be the ruler of the lands, the novel series spawned the popular HBO show which won multiple Emmys and was one of the most-watched series.
After the show ended with season 8, which was largely considered to be disappointing, HBO commissioned multiple prequels, of which only House of the Dragon has seen the light of day. However, among the multiple prequels in development is Aegon’s Conquest, which sees the origins of the Seven Kingdoms. Writer Mattson Tomlin mentioned that Martin instructed him to avoid one mistake from Game of Thrones creators.

Mattson Tomlin, showrunner and writer of the Terminator Zero anime series at Netflix, was not very comfortable writing some parts of season 1 consisting of eight episodes. Amid a few hurdles, the writer had to overcome the biggest problem, and that was eliminating guns from the show. Can you imagine Terminator without guns?
Terminator Zero
The live-action Terminator saga has been action-packed with continuous gun blazing and several explosions. But Netflix, Skydance, and animation studio Production I.G. were all in favor of Terminator Zero to have a Japanese angle. However, Japanese culture is very different from the United States. Japanese gun law has limited the accessibility of guns over the decades, and even the police would first engage in hand-to-hand combat before using guns.

Terminator Zero is all set to take us back into the world of Skynet, this time in the form of an anime series. Despite being set in the universe created by the legendary filmmaker James Cameron in 1984, the upcoming Netflix show will present a new take on the popular franchise.
A still from Terminator Zero
Following the renowned Arnold Schwarzenegger 1984 film, Terminator has spawned several movies, series, and video games. However, the franchise has seen a steady decline in its popularity over time with some of the worst films like Genisys and Salvation.
Several fans hoped that the upcoming series might use its classic time-travel trope to give justice to the underwhelming Terminator films in some ways. Unfortunately, such a thing is now impossible as the showrunner revealed that Terminator Zero will not mess with the canon in any way.

Despite decent reviews, the last Terminator movie, Dark Fate, was the latest instalment in the franchise to underperform at the box office, and it will probably be a very long time before we see the war against the machines continue on the big screen.
While the saga may be taking a (possibly permanent) break in live-action, a new 8-episode Netflix anime series titled Terminator Zero is on the way, and is set to premiere on August 29.
If that date sounds familiar, we were told that the Judgment Day event occurred on August 29, 1997 in the movies.
The streamer (via EW) has debuted the first official promo images for the show, which will take the classic sci-fi franchise in a completely new direction by moving the story to Tokyo, Japan, and, for the first time, shifting away from Sarah and John Connor, who have (together or separately) featured in all previous Terminator movies.

There used to be a time when sequels and part-2s were a rare commodity, and you’d be lucky to get one in the same decade. But we are living in the age of spin-offs and sequels. Production houses are churning out spinoffs of their most popular franchises, and Game of Thrones couldn’t not be one of them.
The massively popular TV series, enraptured a whole generation of audiences right from the pilot episode and left us wanting more. And 2024 brought tons of news in the developments of several new Game of Thrones prequel and spin-offs. Here’s all we know about them so far.

The first two "Terminator" movies are amongst the greatest works of science-fiction in American cinema — which makes the fact the original "Terminator" almost did not happen baffling. These films gave us groundbreaking special effects and iconic lines of dialogue, along with some rather scary predictions of the future.
Of course, the "Terminator" franchise has also given us some very mediocre sequels. Now, after six movies and a live-action TV show, the property is finally entering animation, with "The Batman 2" writer Mattson Tomlin spearheading the anime "Terminator Zero" for Netflix. After the streamer, Skydance, and Production I.G decided they wanted the show to have a Japanese component, Tomlin decided to set the anime in Japan. That decision brought with it a big problem, however. As Tomlin told Entertainment Weekly, "I was aware that there aren't really guns in Japan, and I don't think I quite appreciated how real that was.

In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Mattson Tomlin sheds light on the creative process behind the highly anticipated Terminator Zero anime, revealing how the production team navigated the challenges of adapting the iconic franchise for a Japanese audience.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Terminator Zero is the series breaking away from its American roots and incorporating Japanese elements, a decision influenced by studio Production I.G.
Tomlin revealed that he took this idea a step further and decided to set the eight-episode anime entirely in Japan. This, however, led to an unexpected cultural clash. Notably the absence of firearms in Japanese society.
He recounts his realization of this difference when his initial scripts included scenes of violence in Tokyo, only to be informed by Production I.G that guns are not prevalent in Japan. This revelation prompted Tomlin to rethink his approach and adapt the storyline accordingly.

There have been a few different dates for Judgment Day in the Terminator series, but for fans of James Cameron's blockbuster 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day , that date is August 29. That's also when Netflix, Skydance and anime studio Production I.G's Terminator Zero animated series is set to premiere this year. Terminator Zero showrunner and executive producer Mattson Tomlin shared a first look and some additional details in an exclusive summer preview with Entertainment Weekly . According to Tomlin, the eight-episode series keeps all of the main films as canon while moving the story to Tokyo. A wholly original cast—devoid of the Connors who typically stand at the center of the saga—will be in the spotlight in a story set in 1997, on the bleeding edge of Judgment Day. After multiple attempts at kick-starting new trilogies of films have failed, the live-action Terminator film series is, understandably, taking a bit of a break… but the franchise is set to continue with an eight-episode anime series called Terminator Zero, which is coming our way from Japanese animation studio Production Ig and the Netflix streaming service. Terminator Zero is set to start streaming on August 29th – and to start building the hype, a batch of first look images have arrived online today. You can check them out right here in this article.
August 29th was chosen for the release date because the Terminator films told us that the Judgment Day event occurred on August 29, 1997. Coincidentally, that was also the day Marc Randolph and Reed Hasting launched Netflix as an online DVD rental service.

Originally announced back in 2021, “Terminator: The Anime Series” over at Netflix is now titled “Terminator Zero,” and Entertainment Weekly has an in-depth preview this week.
“Terminator Zero” comes from Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, The Batman II), and Tomlin explains to Entertainment Weekly that the upcoming series will return to the horror vibe of James Cameron’s original sci-fi slasher.
Tomlin explains, “There’s a completely valid version of the Terminator franchise where the Terminator is synonymous with Jason and Freddy, where he is this unrelenting serial killer. There’s a little bit of Friday the 13th in here. There’s a little bit of Michael Myers in here.”
The outlet’s preview piece today also makes it clear that “Terminator Zero” is in-canon with every previous film in the franchise, and that the Connor family is not part of the storyline.

Keanu Reeves is making headlines again after joining the cast of Paramount‘s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog by engaging in talks to star in Triangle of Sadness director Ruben Östlund’s next feature, The Entertainment System Is Down.
Variety broke the news on Friday. Still, details about the plot remain a mystery. Östlund says The Entertainment System Is Down is a social satire set on a long-haul flight with a faulty entertainment system. As boredom spreads throughout the cabin, rage starts to overwhelm the passengers. Chaos ensues. The idea for Östlund’s next feature is something he’s been building for years. The filmmaker says he’s been collecting anecdotes to use as inspiration for The Entertainment System Is Down, with several years of material at his disposal. Though it likely involves dark comedy and sharp humor, Reeves’s role remains a mystery.

Chloë Grace Moretz and Dominic Sessa are joining Michelle Pfeiffer for a little Christmas cheer.
The two actors will star alongside the screen icon in Oh. What. Fun., an Amazon MGM holiday comedy that hails from director Michael Showalter, who is behind the studio’s upcoming Anne Hathaway romantic drama The Idea of You.
Described as both a love letter to moms and tonally a cross between Home for the Holidays and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the story centers on a woman named Claire Clauster (Pfeiffer) who organizes a special Christmas outing, but her family forgets her in the shuffle. By the time they realize their mistake, she’s gone missing and their Christmas is in jeopardy. Luckily, nothing will stop Claire from giving her family the holiday they deserve.
The studio did not comment on the roles, but sources say the duo will play two of the woman’s grown children.

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Debunking fun and exciting rumors is a dirty job sometimes, but someone has to do it. It stands to reason that a movie like "The Batman: Part II" would attract plenty of attention and interest, given the accolades that rolled in immediately following star Robert Pattinson's highly-anticipated introduction as the grungiest and most emo version of Bruce Wayne/Batman we've seen on the big screen yet. Director Matt Reeves didn't just helm another successful reboot for the most popular DC superhero while putting his own unique spin on it, but he did so by assembling a cast full of our greatest actors around. With stars like Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and even Paul Dano surrounding Pattinson, it's no surprise that fans would look forward to what other talent might be coming on board for the sequel.

Amid a couple of big date announcements, Warner Bros has delayed Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II into 2026 following challenges bought on by last year’s strikes.
We’re almost a year on from the beginning of the writers’ strike, the labour shutdown that pre-empted US actors also withdrawing their talents in one of the most contentious labour disputes ever to hit Hollywood. The highly-anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman has been pushed back from its original Oct. 3, 2025 release date on the Warner Bros. slate. The movie will now release Oct. 2, 2026. That means there will now be an over four-year gap between the first film, which saw Robert Pattinson don the cape and cowl, and Part II.
This will of course come as disappointing news for DC fans who have been awaiting the second installment in what’s meant to be a whole trilogy of Batman movies from Reeves and Pattinson. But it isn’t all bad news for Batfans, especially if (weirdly) you also happen to be a fan of The Dark Knight. Taking over the Oct. 3, 2025 spot on the slate is another WB production, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, which is a reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein, starring Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, and Penelope Cruz. Gyllenhaal...

Originally set for release in 2025, it has been announced by Warner Bros. today that hotly anticipated sequel The Batman Part II will now be releasing in theaters much later.
Robert Pattinson’s Batman returns to theaters on October 2, 2026.
Matt Reeves will return to write and direct the sequel. Additionally, we recently learned that the sequel’s script is being written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin (The Batman).
The Batman was a huge box office hit for DC & WB back in 2022, the latest live action take on the iconic Caped Crusader crossing $770 million at the worldwide box office.
No plot details for The Batman 2 are available at this time, but a deleted scene from the first movie suggests we could be seeing more of Barry Keoghan‘s Joker down the road.
A spinoff series centered on Colin Farrell’s “Penguin” is also coming soon.

The Batman Part II is flying off to a new date. The film will now open Oct. 2, 2026. That’s back a full year from its previous date.
Batman 2 wasn’t the only notable change made to Warner Bros. release calendar on Tuesday: The Maggie Gyllenhaal-directed The Bride!, starring Christian Bale, will take Batman 2‘s old date of Oct. 3, 2025; Barry Levinson’s gangster pic Alto Nights is being delayed from Nov. 24, 2024, to March 21, 2025; and Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled, star-studded event pic has landed an Aug. 8, 2025, release date. All of the titles will be offered in Imax.
The sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2022. In August of that year, Mattson Tomlin boarded to co-write with Reeves, and in late January 2023, DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran gave the film a title and date of Oct. 3, 2025. After hitting the brakes due to last year's actors' and writers' strikes, "The Hedge Knight" is back on track, with the latest "Game of Thrones" spin-off series getting a release window. The show was announced just a year ago with the title "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight".
In case you aren't aware of the intricate history of George R. R. Martin's Westeros, "The Hedge Knight" is based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas. They follow Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall, a hedge knight who goes on adventures, and his young friend and esquire "Egg," who happens to be Aegon V Targaryen — a future king and the brother of old Aermon Targaryan (who the late Peter Vaughan portrayed in "Game of Thrones"). The novellas detail Dunk's attempts at becoming a respectable knight and even finding love. For those with trepidations of "The Hedge Knight...

Dunk and Egg keep journeying closer to their HBO debut.
On Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav gave an update on the next Game of Thrones spin-off series: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (a title that seems destined to be changed to something that doesn’t have “Knight” twice).
“[Creator and executive producer] George R.R. Martin is in pre production for the new spin off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere in late 2025 on Max,” Zaslav said.
The show is expected to begin production sometime this year.
Given that House of the Dragon is launching its second season this year (likely sometime this summer), the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms date next year raises the possibility of HBO settling into a flow of having a Thrones drama on each year (assuming both shows can turn around their next seasons within two years).
As reported earlier this month,...

HBO is returning to Westeros!
The network that made history with Game of Thrones and experienced comparatively moderate success with the spinoff House of the Dragon is now developing a third series based in the medieval fantasy world of author George R.R. Martin.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed this week that HBO has greenlit a project with the reported working title of Aegon's Conquest.
The story of the first Aegon Targaryen will be familiar to diehard GoT fans.
(Although those who watched the first two series more casually can be forgiven if that name no longer rings a bell. There's an awful lot of lore in this franchise!)
Basically, Aegon I is the guy who began the process of uniting the Seven Kingdoms when he made a dragon-back flight from Old Valyria with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Viseyna.
Aptly known as Aegon the Conqueror, this founder of the Targaryen dynasty is frequently name-dropped by other characters,...

The world of Game of Thrones is set to grow again.
Following the successful first season of prequel series House of the Dragon, and the announcement of another prequel in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO has commissioned yet another show set in Westeros’s distant past. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Game of Thrones network is now actively developing a show about Aegon’s Conquest, to be written by The Batman II co-writer Mattson Tomlin.
While the story of Aegon I, creator of the Targaryen royal family’s continent-spanning dynasty, has been bandied about as a potential spinoff option for years, this latest news suggests that HBO is finally ready to commit to it. And at first glance, an Aegon I series makes perfect sense. As evidenced by the flagship series’ strong early seasons and House of the Dragon‘s successful debut, Game of Thrones TV efforts...

HBO is at it again, diving deeper into the ‘Game of Thrones‘ universe with a spinoff that’s got fans buzzing. This time, we’re stepping back to a pivotal chapter in Westeros history – Aegon’s Conquest. Imagine dragons soaring over the Seven Kingdoms, not just any dragons, but those belonging to Aegon Targaryen and his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. These three changed the game, bringing together six of the Seven Kingdoms under one banner in a whirlwind of fire and blood, all but Dorne bowing to their might.
What makes this project even more exciting is the creative mind behind it. Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on ‘The Batman Part II’, is taking the reins, promising to bring a fresh yet faithful take on George R.R. Martin’s rich lore. After the success of "Game of Thrones," HBO seems to be taking the same approach as AMC with "The Walking Dead" and doubling down on spinoffs of their flagship program. Season 1 of "House of the Dragon" was met with critical and audience acclaim, and the series premiere was watched by over 10 million on the first day, the biggest in HBO history. There's been talk of a film centered on Aegon Targaryen for quite some time, but news today seems to imply that HBO has decided to deliver a full-on series, rather than a singular film.
According to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is developing a series called "Aegon's Conquest," and has tapped Mattson Tomlin to helm the series. Tomlin is one of the most sought-after writers currently working, having contributed uncredited work to Matt Reeves' "The Batman," co-writing the sequel "The Batman Part II," co-writing the adaptation of Keanu Reeves' "Brzrkr,...

Another Game of Thrones spinoff is reportedly in the works at HBO with plans to go even further back into Westeros’ history with an exploration of Aegon’s Conquest. The series was previously hinted at by Variety in early 2023. This is just the latest in a long list of spinoffs that have been in the works at HBO with no official order made quite yet. But should the show move forward, it would serve as a direct prequel to House of the Dragon, HBO’s first Game of Thrones spinoff about the Targaryen family’s rule in Westeros. THR reports that HBO is developing yet another Game of Thrones prequel series. This one will be a prequel to House of the Dragon and tell the story of Aegon Targaryen’s brutal conquest of Westeros.
Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman Part II with Matt Reeves, is set to pen the Game of Thrones prequel. Aegon Targaryen, who has been mentioned frequently in the franchise, conquered Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and three dragons. With the exception of Dorne, Aegon took control of the continent within just two years, later founding the city of King’s Landing, constructing the Red Keep, and forging the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies. His descendants would go on to rule for centuries.

Back in 2021, Boom! Studios unveiled the comic book series Brzrkr, based on an original idea by Keanu Reeves, who also wrote the comic book with Matt Kindt. Netflix quickly secured the rights to make both a live-action film adaptation and an anime spin-off series that would “expand the Brzrkr universe by exploring different elements of the story”. It’s been a while since we heard any updates on those projects, but Deadline has broken the news that Reeves has been working with China Miéville to write The Book of Elsewhere, a novel set in the world of Brzrkr.

With the debut of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ the Dceu officially concludes, paving the way for a new era led by James Gunn in the rebranded Dcu. However, not all upcoming DC character projects will be part of this new cinematic universe. Notably, Matt Reeves’ ventures into the dark and gritty world of Batman will be classified under “Elseworlds” stories—a deliberate decision by Reeves, maintaining continuity with Pattison’s Batman not being part of the Dceu. Gunn, known for clarifying fan queries, recently addressed a spicy rumor about potential villains in ‘The Batman 2,’ debunking the claims made by scooper Daniel Richtman regarding the inclusion of Professor Pyg and Scarecrow alongside Clayface, Hush, and Dick Grayson.
While the absence of Dick Grayson disappointed many fans, there’s a consensus that the project is in an early development stage, making specific details like this subject to change. A sequel...

With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu is officially finished and the fans can look forward to a new era under the leadership of James Gunn and his new cinematic universe rebranded as Dcu.
But not all exciting projects based on DC characters will be part of the new cinematic universe. Considering how big the Terminator franchise has been, you’d think there would have been more TV-focused content based on it. Until now, the only T.V. version of the Terminator we had was the (rather good) The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Yet, with the film franchise on ice post-Dark Fate, Netflix is teasing an all-new streaming spin-off, albeit an animated one!
Indeed, as part of their Geeked Week event, the streamer unveiled a teaser trailer (which is little more than a title at this point) for Terminator: The Anime Series. Sporting music that pays homage to Brad Fiedel’s iconic score, the teaser promised a new addition to the franchise from Skydance, Japan Animation Studio Production I.G., and Mattson Tomlin (Mother/Android). At the moment, James Cameron doesn’t seem to be involved.
Here’s the synopsis from Deadline:

This year was probably one of the worst years for Warner Bros. and their division, DC Studios. Three movies have been released so far, and all three were commercial failures. There’s only one movie left to be released this year, but honestly, it looks like the companies are already prepared for another box-office flop.
The whole reason behind all of it is the fact that DC Extended Universe has run its course, and while we’re waiting and hoping that the upcoming Dcu can make things better regarding DC’s cinematic universes, the movies that were separated from Dceu were highly successful, although there have been only two of those movies in the last ten years.
2019’s ‘Joker’ and 2022’s ‘The Batman’ were adept at avoiding the trap that many Dceu movies fell in. Both of them received praise and were successful at the box office. Therefore, it’s no wonder that Warner Bros.

Although there is one more DC movie left to be released this year, 2023 is definitely a year that Warner Bros. and DC executives will want to forget as soon as possible. Three movies were released this year, which turned out to be three consecutive flops. It’s no wonder that the studio is stalling so much with the marketing campaign of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ which will close Dceu.
Once Dceu is finished, maybe WB and DC can start hoping for the arrival of better days. Apart from the soft-reboot cinematic universe called Dcu, we know that there are two Elseworlds movies in development: Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ and Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman — Part II,’ and the latter just got a new update regarding its development.
‘The Batman — Part II’ aims to start production next spring, and a potential villain may have been revealed!
