GOP Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) wrote in a social media post that the Biden Administration’s Justice Department tried to “assassinate” former President Donald Trump in a new social media post that shows an escalation in her use of radical language.
The post seems to have started with a statement Trump made on Truth Social, where he claimed without evidence that the Department of Justice “Authorized The FBI To Use Deadly (Lethal) Force” during the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago in August 2022. The search found scores of boxes of classified documents illegally stored at the residence.
Greene went with the former president’s baseless accusation.
“I made sure that he knew,” Greene wrote on X. “The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light. Does everyone get it yet???!!!! What are Republicans going to do about it? I tried to oust our...

Last week, former President Donald Trump‘s criminal trial in New York City for the hush money case involving former adult film actress Stormy Daniels began.
Trump’s trial generated numerous headlines, from Daniels’ ex-attorney saying he would testify against his former client to a man setting himself on fire outside the courthouse where Trump’s case was proceeding.
On Friday, the trial ended with Judge Juan Merchan ordering Trump to remain seated until Merchan left. As Merchan reviewed the details of a contempt hearing for Trump’s repeated violation of a gag order, the former president suddenly stood up. Merchan quickly ordered Trump to sit back down, saying, “Sir, can you please have a seat.”
Trump immediately sat down. The former president sat fuming until dismissed from court, where he made a beeline for the exit, ignoring reporters.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi), the former chair of the disbanded January 6 committee, has proposed a new bill that would strip the Secret Service of protection from convicted felons.
Thompson introduced the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (Disgraced) Former Protectees Act. The bill targets individuals convicted of felonies with a jail sentence of one year or more. With Republicans currently holding the majority, it is unlikely the bill will pass through the House.
In Thompson’s proposal, the representative named former President Donald Trump as someone who could lose Secret Service protection. Trump faces 91 felony charges across four state and federal cases, including his hush money trial.
Thompson stated, “Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee—even a former President.”
Since 1965, former presidents and their spouses have been granted lifetime protection unless they decline.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly has given Tucker Carlson exclusive access to tens of thousands of hours of surveillance footage from the attack on the Capitol, a move that is drawing concerns among former members of the January 6th Committee that the video will be misused.
Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans who sat on the committee, said on CNN that a fear is that clips will be taken out of context or even manipulated to bolster false claims. He said that the concern is that producers will be “cutting little bits of this and saying something it isn’t.” Kinzinger suggested that McCarthy gave Carlson access as a way to win his favor, given the Fox News host’s influence on the right.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-ms), who chaired the committee, said that “it’s hard to overstate the potential security risks if this material were to be used irresponsibly.

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack withdrew the subpoena it issued to former President Donald Trump, as the probe wraps up and Republicans are set to take control of the chamber in January.
“In light of the imminent end of our investigation, the Select Committee can no longer pursue the specific information covered by the subpoena,” Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat and the chairman of the committee, stated in a letter to Trump’s attorney on Wednesday, CNN reports.

Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that he’s running for president a third time. Trump announced his 2024 bid moments after filing a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said, to cheers from his supporters.
As he entered the room along with former first lady Melania Trump, the twice-impeached former president was introduced as the “next president” of the United States, teasing his announcement.
“Two years ago, we were a great nation, and soon, we will be a great nation again,” Trump told his supporters in a speech that was more subdued than many of his rallies around the country.
Trump insisted President Biden has “destroyed” the economy, but he will make it better than ever before.

Former President Donald Trump thanked Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, for professing to the Jan. 6 committee her belief the election was stolen. “I’d like to thank a great woman, Ginni Thomas, for her courage in saying … that she still believes the 2020 election was stolen,” Trump said during a rally in Michigan on Saturday night. “She didn’t wilt under pressure like so many others who are weak people, stupid people. She said what she thought, what she believed.”

The Jan. 6 committee announced on Tuesday that it is postponing what is expected to be its final hearing, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, due to Hurricane Ian.
“In light of Hurricane Ian bearing down on parts of Florida, we have decided to postpone tomorrow’s proceedings,” Chair Bennie Thompson and Vice Chair Liz Cheney said in a statement. “We’re praying for the safety of all those in the storm’s path. The Select Committee’s investigation goes forward and we will soon announce a date for the postponed proceedings.

The first Jan. 6 committee hearing on Thursday night was one of the biggest news stories of the year. Fox News decided not to cover it live, instead letting their primetime lineup of propaganda pushers distort and minimize the committee’s findings — just like they do every night with everything else that happens in America.
It quickly became clear why Fox News was so scared of airing the hearing live. Reps. Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney painted a damning picture of what happened during the Capitol attack, how former President Trump...

Television viewers looking for tension, drama and urgent historical, political and moral relevance now have something to move to the top of their must-watch list. The first “episode” of the Jan. 6 Committee hearings delivered a chilling account of one of the darkest days in American history, complete with harrowing film footage and powerful testimonials. It remains to be seen whether what’s to follow in the coming weeks will do anything to move the needle among a citizenry that seems to have settled into their respective stances. But judging from the opening installment, there will be plenty of powerful material for those with open minds to digest.
The hearing was deemed important enough to be aired live on all the major broadcast and cable news networks. Except, that is, for Fox, which stuck to its regular primetime lineup. Because, after all, Tucker Carlson...

Hundreds of Proud Boys assembled near the Capitol on the mid-morning of Jan. 6 — well before Donald Trump’s speech at the ellipse — and appeared to perform reconnaissance for the attack on the Capitol that they would spearhead later that afternoon.
That was the testimony of British documentary filmmaker Nick Quested, live before the Jan. 6 Committee on Thursday night. Quested was embedded with Proud Boys on that day, and his raw footage of violence during the insurrection was featured at length by the committee.
In his testimony, Quested recalled how hundreds...

Editor’s Note: This post on the Jan 6 committee hearings by our TV critic Dominic Patten has been reclassified from a review to a commentary, and has been edited to better reflect the author’s point of view. In trying to opine that the presentation of evidence about a horrific day in American history did not rise to the occasion, the author did not mean to denigrate or belittle the loss of life and shocking violence that happened that day.
If tonight’s primetime debut of the House January 6 committee investigating the Maga-fueled murderous attack on the U.S. Capitol last year was any indication of how the democracy-protecting politicians plan on making their pitch to the American public, they fell short.
The fact is Thursday’s hearings led by chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-wy) was not effective.
