This article contains Naomi spoilers.
Black girls and young women are underrepresented in fantasy and science fiction. In the amorphous genre we’ll call “superhero” television (and film), there are very few, if any, major characters who are young, Black girls. We didn’t really see a Black girl superhero in live-action on TV until Jennifer Pierce gets powers and becomes Lightning in Black Lightning. And while that character is important, she’s the only one. It’s not that Black girls don’t exist in these worlds, but that they are largely relegated to supporting characters whose stories serve to further the development of a white and/or male lead—if they’re even given stories of their own. To be a Black girl in a superhero story is to be a sidekick, if that.
That changed with Naomi.
Naomi skateboarded its way into our hearts the moment the titular character appeared on-screen.

“Naomi” has been canceled after one season at The CW, Variety has learned.
The DC series debuted its one and only season back in January. In the series, when a supernatural event shakes her hometown of Port Oswego to the core, Naomi (Kaci Walfall) sets out to uncover its origins, with a little help from her fiercely loyal best friend Annabelle (Mary-Charles Jones). Warning: This article contains spoilers from the CW/Warner Bros. TV two-part season one finale of Naomi, ep. 12 “Ready or Not” and ep. 13 “Who Am I?”
Imagine finding out that your adopted parents took the lives of your biological parents.
Something that just was never in the DNA of Jonathan and Martha Kent, Superman’s down-to-Earth guardians.
But life can’t always imitate that of your mentor, the Man of Steel; a harsh truth that alien Naomi (Kaci Walfall) learned tonight on the two-hour season finale of the Ava DuVernay-Jill Blankenship co-created series.
But before we get there, in part one of the season finale, “Ready or Not,” our protagonist is given a locket by fellow alien Akira (Stephanie March), who was her mother’s friend. She’s re-building a ship to get Naomi back to her home planet, a mission her Earth parents Greg and Jennifer McDuffie (Barry Watson...

Most of the superheroes on the DC-on-The-cw dramas have a long history with each other. Their comic book counterparts have been around for decades, and even in these adaptations, the characters have crossed over into each other’s worlds to team up and take down villains more than once.
But when “Naomi” joins the lineup on Jan. 11, the show — and the titular character, played by Kaci Walfall — is on her own.
She may be a big fan of Superman within the series — so much so that she runs one of the largest fan sites in the world about the DC hero — but she lives in a very different universe than the one in which The CW’s Superman (of “Superman & Lois”) resides.
“I want this to be an autonomous story about Naomi,” executive producer Ava DuVernay tells Variety. “One of the things I really wanted was for her to live in her own universe.

Even though high schooler Naomi (Kaci Walfall) tells us in her opening voiceover that “everyone has a superhero origin story,” hers immediately looks different enough from most on TV to stand apart. For one, she follows in the footsteps of Javicia Leslie as The CW’s second Black woman to lead a DC superhero show, albeit one as different from “Batwoman” in tone and storyline as can be. From executive producers Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship — and with canny, fluid pilot direction by Amanda Marsalis — the CW series feels something like if “Superman” blended up weekly comics with the sensibilities of a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Secret Files of Alex Mack.” For another, Walfall’s Naomi isn’t some moody outcast waiting in the wings for something amazing to happen to her, as is the case for so many other potential heroes. In fact, as the first episode conveys...

Ava DuVernay is expanding beyond the comic book world of Naomi via her upcoming CW series of the same name, premiering Jan. 11. And that could leave the door open for potential crossovers with other popular superhero series on the same network.

The CW has unveiled its first look at Kaci Walfall as the titular hero of its upcoming series Naomi.
During Saturday’s DC FanDome presentation, the network shared a teaser that sees Walfall’s Naomi on the case of what seems to be a mysterious stunt involving superman.
“I need this for my site,” Naomi interrupts her class before rushing out into the hallways.
After grabbing her bags to get to the center of action Asap, Naomi skateboards through the hallways of her school and reaches her destination. However, potentially overwhelmed by what she sees, Naomi loses consciousness. But right before it’s lights out for her, she sees a familiar silouhette shoot through the sky.

Ahead of unveiling its fall schedule, The CW has announced pickups for two new dramas.
The series receiving orders to series are All American: Homecoming and Naomi.
Both shows have been thought to be locks throughout the entire development season.
All American has remained a strong performer for the network in its third season.
All American: Homecoming will focus on Geffri Maya's recurring character, Simone Hicks, as well as a new athlete.
Simone is a tennis hopeful, while the new person is an elite baseball player from Chicago.
Together, they will deal with the high stakes of college sports while also navigating the highs, lows, and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at college.
All American showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll will executive-produce and write the spinoff, while Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Robbie Rogers, who work on the parent series, will be back to work on the offshoot.

The CW is starting to make decisions about new series for the 2021-22 broadcast season.
The network has picked up All American: Homecoming and Naomi to series.
It comes as the youth-skewing broadcaster had tough decisions to make over which projects to pick up. Powerpuff, a live-action reboot of the hit cartoon, is being reworked and re-piloted off-cycle, while the Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift remains in consideration.
Black Lightning spinoff Painkiller and Jennie Snyder Urman’s millennial nun dramedy Our Ladies of Brooklyn are not moving forward.
The All American spinoff and Ava DuVernay’s superhero project join a reboot of classic sci-fi drama 4400 straight-to-series. The CW is set to unveil its full fall schedule and midseason 2022 programming on Tuesday.

If there's one takeaway for the NCIS Season 17 Episode 1 photos, it's that we should probably be worried about Ziva.
CBS has dropped some stills from the upcoming season premiere, and we get to see the returning Cote de Pablo in action.
Both Ziva and Gibbs look a bit worse for wear in the above photo, leading us to believe they are going to get caught up in a fight to the death.
This is all thanks to the new person who is trying to take them down.
But how do they both wind up in this environment?
That's still up for debate.
Thanks to the official trailer for NCIS Season 17, we know that a mysterious female who was chasing Ziva is now after Gibbs.
That's probably why Ziva showed up on NCIS Season 16 Episode 24 -- to warn her former friend about the impending doom.

ABC hasn't debuted a lot of new dramas during the 2018-19 television season. A Million Little Things did well enough to earn a second season renewal, but while Whiskey Cavalier is still pretty new, it hasn't taken the Nielsen ratings by storm. Now the Alphabet Network has introduced The Fix TV show, from Oj Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, along with Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain -- the longtime writing duo who got their TV start on Joss Whedon's Angel. Does it have the right mix to bring in viewers and score an invite to return? Will The Fix be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. **Status update below.
