True love and the British Empire collide in 1957’s The Admirable Crichton, the riches to rags story of one hard-to-get butler and a boatload of love struck aristocrats.
Loam Manor is run with steely officiousness by the valet known simply as Crichton, a kindly martinet who views the class system as the crowning achievement of British society – a notion which not coincidentally coincides with Crichton’s dominance over the servant’s quarters.
The Loams themselves, three spoon-fed sisters and their dithering father are naturally spoiled rotten, viewing their stable of servants as an exotic species to be kept on invisible leashes – in such a fraught situation the tables are just begging to be turned. And so they are when the Lord’s ship sinks,...

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Local hero and burger enthusiast Charles Ramsey will never have to pay for a beef patty in Cleveland again, thanks to a special free burger card good at more than a dozen area restaurants, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Ramsey became a national sensation this month after giving a colorful account of the rescue efforts that helped free Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight earlier in May.
"I heard screaming," Ramsey told reporters after the rescue on May 6. "I'm eating my McDonald's, I come outside, I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of her house. So I go on the porch and she says, ‘Help me get out, I’ve been here a long time.'"
The Internet quickly latched onto Ramsey's McDonald's detail, and the fast food chain was soon swamped by people asking the company to honor the burger-loving neighbor.

Throw international martial arts badass Tony Jaa (“Ong Bak”) and low-budget 80s action icon Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables,” “Red Scorpion”) into a movie together and you immediately have my attention. And that movie is “A Man Will Rise.” The other day, we had a few pictures from the set, but little to no actual information about the film, formerly titled “Local Hero.” Well now we’re back with even more photos, and whole bunch of news. And this isn’t just news, this is news that will pique your interest, especially if you enjoy watching people get pummeled about the head and face. First off, Tony Jaa is not only the star of “A Man Will Rise,” he’s also directing. This is his third venture behind the camera, as he helmed both “Ong Bak 2” and “Ong Bak 3.” He’s also bringing his old pal Panna Rittikrai (co-director of the two aforementioned films,...

How’s this for the best news you’re going to hear all week: martial arts superstar Tony Jaa (“Ong Bak”) is teaming up with legendary action icon, and chemical engineer, Dolph Lundgren (“Rocky IV”). The two will co-star in the international action flick “A Man Will Rise.” Formerly titled “Local Hero,” with Jean-Claude Van Damme slated to appear opposite Jaa, a few photos from the set of “A Man Will Rise” have found their way into our eager little hands. There isn’t much known about the story thus far, but if these pictures are any indication, there’s a western theme, with Lundgren in a cowboy hat, and a some sweet facial hair stylings. If nothing else, it’s nice to see Jaa actually working on set again. Hopefully now that he has wriggled out of his exclusive contract with Sahamongkol, he’ll be able to take on more and more movies.

Empire Magazine has issued the a list of what they determine to be the 100 Best British Films of All-Time and as far as how they decided "What was a British film?" it seems sort of arbitrary in some cases as the Terry Gilliam-directed Brazil and Michelangelo Antonioni-directed Blow-Up both make the list despite the helmers being of American and Italian descent. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 appears on the list as well, despite being a big Hollywood production. I'm not sure if you'll be nitpicking on those facts too hard though as I'm sure the overall placement of the films will bother you more in some cases. Personally, looking over the list there are a few films I just plain don't like. I know it's not popular to say it, but I don't like Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now and it's ranked number four...

The first images from Cameron Crowe's We Bought A Zoo have arrived online thanks to USA Today. This will be his first film since Elizabethtown and it arrives in theaters on December 23rd. Zoo is based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee and stars Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson as "a couple who purchase a dilapidated zoo and try to restore it to its former glory." The supporting cast includes, Thomas Haden Church, Colin Ford, Angus MacFadyen and John Michael Higgins.
Here is an excerpt from the article in USA Today, where Damon talks a bit about why he chose the role and his character. Be sure to check out the whole story Here.
"I've done a scene with a lion and an up-close scene with a tiger. And two days ago, I did one with a grizzly bear." That means, he says with a chuckle, "I've done lions and tigers and bears.

The Ealing classic about Scottish islanders attempting to liberate a boatload of alcohol comes up sparkling in this wonderful reissue
This summer has seen a string of classic Ealing reissues, and continues with this: beguiling, subversive and a complete joy. Basil Radford plays a flustered Englishman sent to command a Home Guard force on a remote Scottish island during the second world war. He is pop-eyed with indignation to find that his men, along with the entire civilian population – maddened by a wartime alcohol shortage – are secretly intent on plundering 50,000 cases of whisky from a shipwreck. This tale of an outsider failing to come to grips with a tight-knit community could be screened as a triple bill with Local Hero ("Oil-money galore") and The Wicker Man ("Occult conspiracy galore"). Insouciantly, the film finally reveals that the mass pilfering drove whisky prices up, and eventually caused another booze famine. So victimless crime doesn't pay?...

This Caledonian adventure reinforces the Braveheart image of hard as nails Scots. Does it do them a disservice?
Here we go again. Where? North of the border. What kind of people will we be meeting? Well, we're talking about a place where even today, men wear skirts without pants in spite of the cold and relish a beverage made out of girders. If you've seen the likes of Braveheart, Highlander, Rob Roy or even Neds, you'll know what to expect. These people are going to be tough!
In The Eagle, so it proves. The imperial intruder rash enough to tangle with the highland hordes is no softie himself. Channing Tatum's Marcus undergoes anaesthetic-free surgery without a whimper escaping his lips. Yet his Roman stoicism is one thing; the consummate savagery of the Pictish foes he'll encounter is something else. These chaps tear your heart out while you're still alive...

Robert here, with my series Distant Relatives, where we look at two films, (one classic, one modern) related through a common theme and ask what their similarities and differences can tell us about the evolution of cinema.
Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do
It shouldn't come as a shock that Blazing Saddles and Hot Fuzz have basically the same setup: outsider comes to small town where he has a hard time fitting but eventually becomes the only man who can save the village. It's not that Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg and Mel Brooks and his co-writers all coincidentally had the same idea. Truth is, the western and cop movie, the two genres being spoofed here, are the same genre only set 100 years apart or so. In both cases, an outsider protagonist (not even literal outsiders, moral outsiders like High Noon's Gary Cooper or Serpico's Al Pacino work too!

The Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, who has died aged 63 after a long illness, wrote the multimillion-selling hit Baker Street, which more than 30 years after its 1978 release still netted him an annual £80,000. At the end of the 1970s he did his best work, a series of richly resonant albums that gave no hint of their creator's inner troubles.
Rafferty was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, an unwanted third son. His father, Joseph, was an Irish-born miner. His mother, Mary Skeffington, whose name would provide a Rafferty song title, dragged young Gerry round the streets on Saturday nights so that they would not be at home when his father came back drunk. They would wait outside, in all weathers, until he had fallen asleep, to avoid a beating. "If it wasn't for you, I'd leave," Mary told Gerry.

Welcome back, Zoners, and happy New Year to all! I wish everyone a healthy and joyous 2011. (*Toasting you all with a sparkling glass of champagne*) One thing that will help get it off to a great start: new episodes of the Report! We’ve got a governor, a renowned educator, and two Harvard-based doctors.
Monday, January 3rd: Governor Ed Rendell:
Former mayor of Philadelphia Ed Rendell has been Governor of Pennsylvania since 2002. He’s a major player in the Democratic Party and a member of the Democratic Governors Association who has advocated the use of slot machines to reduce taxes, cut administrative costs, and quadrupled the number of minority- and women-owned business in his state. A huge sports fan, Rendell recently criticized the NFL for cancelling the Philadelphia Eagles/Minnesota Vikings game due to the blizzard, claiming that “we’re becoming a nation of wussies.”

The Dave Matthews Band turned up the heat at their televised National Football League (NFL) pre-game warm-up concert in New Orleans, Louisiana on Thursday night, September 9 when they performed a rendition of "Talking Heads' Burning Down the House".
The group was joined onstage by local dancers dressed up as Mardi Gras carnival characters at the big show, which also featured a two-song performance from Taylor Swift. Local hero Harry Connick Jr. then sang an off-key rendition of "When the Saints Come Marching In" on a parade float carried into the city's Superdome stadium and introduced the unveiling of the New Orleans Saints championship banner, which was hung from the rafters.
The Saints kicked off their 2010/2011 season against the Minnesota Vikings after Colbie Caillat's nervous rendition of the U.S. National Anthem.

Screenplay, Britain's most northerly film festival, is a world away from the glitz and hype of Cannes
A couple of years ago, as I was dragging my sorry bones around another overcrowded, overheated, overhyped film festival in the broiling south of France, somebody asked me "How come you always look so miserable in Cannes?" I thought about this for a while before answering, "All things considered, I'd rather be in Shetland."
This was no idle threat. For the past four years, my partner Linda Ruth Williams and I have been proudly co-curating Shetland Arts' annual ScreenPlay festival, a celebration of everything we love about cinema that's about as far away from the exclusive ghastliness of the Croisette as it's possible to get in terms of both climate and culture. Last year we held a screening in a bus shelter in Unst, the most northerly in the UK (if you don't get off here,...

In homage to Jacques Tati, French animator Sylvain Chomet has crafted an exquisite, gently comic and elegiac film
Seven years ago, French animator Sylvain Chomet made a pleasing intervention into the world of bland, airbrushed, computer-animated American movies with his delightful Belleville Rendezvous (aka Les Triplettes de Belleville). A crucial element in his wildly inventive film was the Tour de France, and Chomet wanted to include a clip featuring the cycling postman from his great hero Jacques Tati's Jour de fête. He wrote to the director's daughter, Sophie Tatischeff, seeking permission, and she was so impressed she not only gave him the go-ahead but also drew his attention to an unfilmed screenplay her father had written in the late 1950s. Filed in the archives as "Film Tati No 4", it was dedicated to her. Tati had abandoned what has now become The Illusionist as being too serious and personal, embarking instead on the extravagant Playtime,...

Often disguised as somewhere else, Toronto has been a popular filming location for years, as Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World points out. Here’s Jeff’s tribute to the geekiest location in cinema...
"They film movies in Toronto?" one character says, rather incredulously, in the recent Edgar Wright extravaganza, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. They certainly do.
Toronto is the cinematic equivalent of Cinderella: although it hosts one of the world's biggest film festivals and is often seen in movies and TV, it's usually dolled up to look like some other North American metropolis, say New York or Chicago, a fact the recent Scott Pilgrim makes sure to satirise.
The city's most iconic piece of architecture, the Cn Tower (formerly the world's tallest freestanding structure) is often hidden away, lest cinemagoers ever identify the city's skyline by its giant phallus.
Toronto so often represents other cities, or any city, that...

A laconic, creepy, Danish-Coen-brothers cascade of pure trouble, Henrik Ruben Genz's "Terribly Happy" is a terrific example of a film traveling well-worn style and content paths and yet somehow never striking us as clichéd or even tired. Helplessly, critics bellyache about movies that repeat experiences they've had many times before, whereas the average moviegoer has substantially fewer accumulated movie hours and are less prone to noticing or caring if a film treads on well-scorched ground.
Such is the downside of decent criticism; we need knowledgeable reviewing (not, we should note, consumer bulletins from pop music writers or gore-loving fanboy diaries or Anthony Lane jokes), but pro reviewers' movie lives are simply not the same as their readers' -- they are relentless and habitual rather than whimsical and recreational, and the difference matters.
Even so, as with Genz's moody piece of mayhem, critics who retch at formula exhaustion and too-easy...

Afternoon Meme: Kenny Wormald Is "Footloose," Jason Momoa Bulks Up, and Will Phillips Makes Us Proud
Michael J. Fox ages well, Hot In Cleveland goes global, and first glimpse at The Green Hornet.
After screen testing over 1,000 leads, 24-year-old dancer Kenny Wormald has been cast as the lead in the remake of Footloose. While I could do without the remake, he looks more the part than Chace Crawford.
You probably remember hot otter Aiden James from his “On the Run” video, or my occasional Twitter stalking of him in scoop neck t-shirts. He’s working on a new album, but as an unsigned artist he’s crowdsourcing the financing. You can get involved, like a true patron of the arts.

Even putting 17-year-old Miley’s head on an of-age model’s naked body is a felony, and if prosecuted and convicted (and it’s almost always prosecuted), he’s looking at jail time and having to register as a sex offender. And because it went out electronically, it’s a federal offense with a 15-year mandatory sentence if convicted. There is no punch line to this, it’s just slimy.

Lady Gaga has won the Outstanding Music Artist award at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Awards. The singer, who caused a stir with a lesbian kiss in her controversial "Telephone" video, was honored at the 21st Awards show on Saturday night, May 5 both for her music and for promoting equality and increasing the visibility of the Lgbt community.
Gaga beat her friend "American Idol" alum Adam Lambert, as well as Brandi Carlile, The Gossip and Otep, in what was the final installment on the GLAAD Awards in San Francisco, after two ceremonies earlier in the year were held at New York and Los Angeles.
Other big winners included Lee Daniels, the gay director of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire", who revealed that he had overcome huge issues with his sexuality since his youth. He said, "I come from a world where I was beaten daily...

Plus Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Ed O'Neill on Modern Family's kissing controversy, and did Ellen kill American Idol?
GLAAD held their San Francisco Media Awards over the weekend. Among many recipients, Cybill Shepherd received the Golden Gate Award, Lee Daniels received the Davidson/Valenti Award, and Robert Hanson, the president of Levi Strauss America, received the Local Hero Award.
That had to feel good to Lee Daniels, who revealed that in his youth, his dad beat him, he was the object of bullies, and contemplated suicide.
Angelo Garcia, who was once the youngest member of Menudo, has come out as gay in TV Notas. This follows a recent nude photo shoot he did for gay magazine ParagonMen.
Rumor has it that Yahoo! is trying to buy Huffington Post, but if Huffington won’t sell, they’ll settle for a rich content licensing deal. Yahoo! remains the only tech...

The Avatar soundtrack. James Cameron is worshipped in Hollywood. Not so much in the rest of the world, but in Hollywood, hoo boy is he a popular lad. That’s because he specialises in making the kind of films American cinema is founded on (and because they tend to make bucket loads of money). Lavish, immersive, often visually spectacular, sometimes detrimentally saccharine exercises in market dominance. Sometimes, he makes brilliant popcorn cinema (Aliens, Terminator 2). French cinema on the other hand is founded on literate intellectualism, German cinema has its roots in expressionism and challenging visual techniques. Cameron then, lest any of you popcorn chewin’ masses out there forget, makes popular American movies. He’s a skilled entertainer – he ain’t Picasso. He ain’t even Coppola. He’s a rung above Lucas.

Paranormal Activity (15)
(Oren Peli, 2007, Us) Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs. 86 mins
This movie's paranormal box-office activity in the Us has raised expectations sky high, but it sets out to do one thing – scare the pants off you – and does that horribly well. Tapping into our primal fear of things going bump in the night, especially while we're asleep, it gives you the shivers with little more than a grainy fixed-camera shot of a bedroom, as a regular guy tries to get to the bottom of his girlfriend's alleged haunting by trying to video their nocturnal disturbances. There's a certain amount of audience investment required. If you go in determined not to be scared, you probably won't be, but if that's the case, why buy a ticket in the first place?
Law Abiding Citizen (18)
(F Gary Gray, 2009, Us) Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Colm Meaney. 109 mins

In the opening scene of Strigoi, directed by Faye Jackson (Lump), ex-Communists Constantin and Ileana Tirescu (Constantin Barbulescu and Roxana Guttmann), cold-hearted landowners whom the townspeople suspect of murder, are themselves murdered and buried angry-mob-style. Soon after, Vlad (Catalin Paraschiv) returns to his Romanian hometown after an extended vacation in Italy, and finds that the townspeople are dropping like flies. Almost everyone but him is convinced that an undead Constantin and his wife are responsible, but Vlad and local policeman Octav (Vlad Jipa) decide to conduct their own amateur investigation into the steadily-rising death toll, uncovering a long-buried local history of corruption, racism, and supernatural dirty tricks...
