Domestic box office has taken a dive over the course of the year: Last weekend alone saw a downturn from 2016 by about five percent, so no small change when millions and millions are on the line, and hardly a good sign heading into the key holiday season. However, at least one segment of the market has triumphed mightily — films directed by women.
Both Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” and Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” have busted open long-standing box office records, heralding both the power of female-directed material, but while their successes are mighty, they also highlight how far Hollywood still has to go when it comes to recognizing such films.
Now the number-two domestic earner of the year — Jenkins’ film has so far earned over $412 million at the box office, second only to the juggernaut that is “Beauty and the Beast” — “Wonder Woman” set a new record for a female-directed feature opening.

Money talks — and apparently, it also walks … away from helicopter crashes. A chopper carrying WWE “SmackDown Live” commissioner and occasional in-ring performer Shane McMahon — the son of WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon — made an emergency landing today in the Atlantic Ocean near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, NY. The crash-landing occurred around 10:25 a.m. Et about a half-mile off shore, per WWE. Neither the pilot, nor the man who squared-circle fans lovingly refer to as Shane O Mac, were injured. Shane’s always been a tough guy, but this sets new precedent. Also Read: Wrestlemania 32: Watch Shane McMahon.

It's a tale (almost) as old as time. When it comes to Disney, reinventing its animated classics with a live-action twist is its go-to way of attracting modern audiences. Take Beauty and the Beast for example. Thanks to Emma Watson's picture-perfect portrayal of Princess Belle (plus Dan Stevens and every other A-list actor's voice lent to the enchanted objects inside Beast's castle), the 2017 update earned a whopping $1.2 billion worldwide at the box office. Money talks, right? All those dollar bills, paired with the nostalgia factor that comes with seeing childhood heroes in a brand new light makes reaching back into the Disney vault a no-brainer. The Lion King, Aladdin...

Ah, Thanksgiving! A holiday that was seemingly tailor-made for binge-watching, complete with plenty of family and friends to consume mass quantities of both media and tasty meals alongside. But Thanksgiving is also built for reflection, and we here at IndieWire are very happy that the media landscape has afforded us plenty of things to be grateful for, even in the midst of all kinds of cultural and political upheaval: Movies aren’t dead; the biopic is very much alive; on-screen representation is finally taking a turn; some of our most beloved TV duo are back together on the small screen; and 2017 is looking very bright indeed. The list goes on and on.
In celebration of Thanksgiving, the IndieWire team has come together to offer up some of our personal reflections on the movies, shows, trends and creators we are most grateful for this year. Check out our testimonials below, and...

“Money talks nobody walks.” As part of this year’s Greater St. Louis Humanities Festival – which runs from Sept. 23-Oct. 2, and whose theme is “E Pluribus Unum?” – Cinema St. Louis presents a free screening Monday, September 26 at 7 Pm of writer/director John Sayles’ masterful City Of Hope (1991), which compellingly explores the racial attitudes and socioeconomic forces that divide the citizens of the fictional (but all too realistic) Hudson City, N.J.
An ambitious, richly detailed panorama of a city in decline – and rapidly approaching crisis – City Of Hope addresses urban decay in the United States by poking around in Hudson City’s political garbage, turning over and exposing the contaminated dirt of patronage, bribery, and special interests, demonstrating how the toxins trickle down to the middle class and poor, seep into our attitudes, and poison our thoughts. The sprawling cast includes actors from the director’s informal stock company – Joe Morton,...

During its coverage of the Olympics’ opening ceremony Friday night, NBC aired an interview with two of the event’s co-directors, Brazilian filmmakers Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) and Daniela Thomas (“Paris, je t’aime”)—though it’s unclear if anyone from the network was listening. Meirelles and Thomas explained the purpose behind the performance, which was to avoid the host nation’s usual navel-gazing (“talking about their belly buttons,” as Meirelles put it) in favor of global issues, connecting the history of Brazil to the specter of climate change.
Perhaps he meant that the navel-gazing would be reserved for NBC: With “Today Show” talent emceeing the spectacle at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium and Bob Costas plugging The Golf Channel from the main set, the telecast had the feeling of an especially expensive presentation at the Television Critics Association’s biannual get-together, laying on the salesmanship a little strong.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

For the Kardashian sisters, a Friday night in with the girls isn't all that different from your girls' night: There are rounds of "marry, f---, kill" and a lot of time spent playing with Snapchat filters. Khloé, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian got together with several friends, including hairstylist Jen Atkins and Malika Haqq, for a night of fun partially shared with followers of Kim's app. Kim, 35, also documented much of the night on Snapchat: Everything from the matching onesies they wore to the conflicts about the room temperature (other people were burning up Kim was "freezing") to the cute cameos...

I love Vikings. I love the costumes, I love the hair, I love the strong women who take no guff. I love how the show hides education inside interesting character arcs, betrayal, and violence. It’s edutainment for adults. So when I heard yesterday that Katheryn Winnick (Lagertha) had been cast in the film adaptation of Steven King’s The Dark Tower, I was excited. But then I remembered the how Hollywood thinks, and I got nervous. Back in March, Idris Elba (Luthor, Pacific Rim) was announced as Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger in The Dark Tower. A great piece of news. But if Hollywood is known for anything, it’s tempering a good decision with a terrible one. And the track record for casting two black leads in a fantasy-action film is…not good.Off the top of my head, the only one I can think of is Will Smith’s After Earth.

"Money talks, bigotry walks" could be the moral of the story for opponents of discriminatory "religious liberty" bills, if Georgia's Free Exercise Protection Act is any indication. On Monday morning, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announced that, under pressure from a growing list of influential companies, he will veto the bill that landed on his desk, and even appeared to conced the discriminatory purpose of the bill.

Happy New Year! Or, if you were lucky enough to be invited to a wild New Year’s Eve party… happy Saturday!
We have 366 bright and shiny new days in which we can save the world, love our families, party with our friends, go to the movies and read comics. Time and space are great that way.
In the past year, despite Gamergate, there has been a trend towards including female characters and female perspectives in video games. In other words, the misogynist jerks who screamed about “journalistic integrity” made no difference at all in the gaming industry. In this case, I suspect the appropriate comment is, “Money talks / Bullshit walks.”
On the tale end of 2015, I read two things that really changed my worldview. The first was Between the World and Me by incoming Black Panther writer Ta-nehisi Coates. It’s a short book, but it took me a...

Money talks — and starting in 2020, the $10 bill will have a different voice! U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced on Wednesday, June 17, that the $10 bill is being redesigned to feature a woman's portrait. The new currency will debut in five years to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Constitution's 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women's right to vote. “I Feel Like I Never Want To Make A Movie Again” Sam Taylor-Johnson Says About 'Fifty Shades' Sequel
Money talks, and opinions walk. That's certainly the case with "Fifty Shades Of Grey." Hardly a critical darling, the movie nonetheless opened with a massive $239 million worldwide last weekend, and one can only imagine that Universal wants to get the gang back together to make "Fifty Shades Darker." In fact, the followup films are reportedly in the works, but could the meddling ways of author E.L. James have ruined the kinky fun for director Sam Taylor-Johnson? While it has already been said there are currently "no discussions" for Taylor-Johnson to return to helm any sequels, it would seem her clashes with the writer have taken a toll. “I feel like I never want to make a movie again,” Taylor-Johnson told Variety last month, “Maybe that will possibly change soon.” As for actors Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, they are contracted to return. Whatever you might say about their chemistry (or...

After the judges placed the tiara on Toledo's head, Hayalla snatched it off, threw it to the ground, and furiously stormed off the stage. There's no prize for the best caption; just have some hump day fun with it! Are we really experiencing the so-called "reign of Kevin Hart," as the above January Hollywood Reporter cover states? Well, he's certainly in demand, and I'd say has worked himself into the tiny elite group of black actors whose name could get studio movies greenlit, if only because of repeat box office successes over the last couple of years. Money talks, right? To wit, "Ride Along" was the top grossing "black film" of 2014, earning an impressive $134+ million. "The Wedding Ringer," which is out this Friday, is just one of a handful of projects on Hart's slate,...

As American Horror Story gains traction and propels itself towards a season finale like an out-of-control carnival ride, it feels as though there's a certain loss of poise. Perhaps it's due to the fact that our hero, Jimmy, is an aimless drunk who is distracted by grief and the gigantic bosoms of the side show's new fat lady. Perhaps that's due to the fact that Stanley and Elsa's complicated plot to capture and decapitate the twins continues to run into complications. The title of the most episode of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" should tell you two things. One, all those nice ladies who were disappointed by how drunk and uncoordinated Jimmy was at their Tupperware party will meet a grisly end by the time the credits roll. Two, all pretense of subtlety or nuance has gone out the window.
So Fresh, So Clean
The episode kicks off with Dandy (Finn Wittrock) hitting up Maggie Esmeralda (Emma Roberts) for a peek into her crystal ball. There's something different about Dandy; for one thing, he's crying less. He seems so much more alive and charming since he killed his mother and bathed in her blood. When Maggie looks into her crystal ball, we see flashbacks to Dandy doing some fairly grotesque things with corpses, but it's not clear if Maggie sees the same thing. “Do the same thing as last time. Everyone’s Happy.”
22 Jump Street, one of the biggest earners of the year ($190 million domestic), is gearing up for another sequel! I would say that was pretty obvious after it made so much money, but the brains behind 22 Jump Street were pretty clear in the closing credits that they were laughing at the idea of another go at this. Perhaps it was the endless questioning of a sequel after the first movie came out that made them lampoon the idea this time around, it clearly had me fooled. Money talks.
Sony Pictures is moving forward with a third installment and has recruited one of the 22 Jump Street writers, Rodney Rothman, to take care of it. We don’t know if Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be back to direct but they will serve as producers alongside Rothman, Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Neal Moritz.

She’s no stranger to keeping strange hours, and last night (September 3) Rihanna returned to her New York City hotel after a long evening out.
Donning a black “Money Talks” sweatshirt with jeans and sneakers, the Barbadian beauty seemed a bit cranky as she strolled into the Midtown Manhattan establishment.
Perhaps Ri-Ri was out looking for extra-terrestrials, as one source told press that she’s an avid believer in alien life forms.
The insider revealed, "Rihanna has always been convinced aliens will land on Earth in her lifetime. So she started using the man, who calls himself a sky scanner, to give her information from Nevada on anything that relates to sightings. He keeps in touch with her from the Little A'Le'Inn - a motel which hosts UFO hunters. It's also near one of the world's most secret government bases, Area 51. Does the songstress have her ex on the mind? RiRi was spotted solo, heading out to dinner in NYC, where she was wearing a smile — and a very familiar piece of jewelry. Is the star missing her ex and trying to send him a message? Does this mean they might be kissing and making up?
Rihanna stepped out in NYC on Sept. 3 where the 25-year-old dressed down for dinner at the Mercer in a pair of jeans and a ‘Money Talks’ sweatshirt, but she made quite the statement with her bold, gold Christian Lacroix necklace — and it wasn’t just because her choice of jewelry is so exquisite, it’s because of who gave her the item that has us talking! RiRi first showed off this particular necklace on Instagram in December 2012, quoting Chris Brown‘s song “Give It Away,” saying, “He told me ‘you better not give it away.

Lebanese writer/director Ziad Doueiri (West Beirut – ’98, Lila Says- ’04) finally returns behind the camera for his third feature, an adaptation of the novel by Algerian writer Yasmina Khadra. A successful Arab surgeon living in Israel finds his life shattered when he finds his wife was involved in a suicide bombing thus sending him on a journey full of unintentional discovery. A thoroughly profound, layered and complex film, the Israeli and Palestinian conflict provides the backdrop for what is essentially a thriller with a love story at its core. With Ali Suliman in a dramatically anchor-heavy lead role, and equally strong perfs from supporting players Reymond Amsalem and Uri Gavriel, according to our four-star review, “this is perhaps the most humanistic take on the never-ending conflict to ever be presented on the screen, definitely an important and compelling film.” The Attack [06.21 - NYC and Washington] received its world premiere showing at Tiff last fall where...

CNBC announced at the Television Critics Association on Saturday it was ordering to series Money Talks, a reality show all about the world of sports betting. The star of the show will be Steve Stevens, whom CNBC's press release describes as "a well-known handicapper" in Vegas. There's only one problem: no one in Vegas knows who he is. In addition to this, top people in the sports betting world are accusing Stevens of being a "fraud" and "ex-convict" who shouldn't be given a platform on a major network.

A man has put a £10,000 bet on Jack Carroll winning the final of Britain's Got Talent.
The Isle of Wight resident placed the money on the 14-year-old comedian with odds of 9/2.
Ladbrokes has since cut Carroll's price to 3/1, making him the second favourite to win after Attraction at 5/4.
The bookmaker is also expecting to see The Luminites (2/5) and Robbie Kennedy (4/6) progress to the final from tonight's (May 30) show.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: "Money talks, and as Bgt favourites often lose out on the night, we think Jack's fans could be on to a winner come Saturday evening."
Judge David Walliams recently tweeted of Carroll: "If I'd had the talent of @fatjacko at 14 (or even now) I would have desperately wanted to be on the show.
"#Bgt is a huge opportunity to launch a career, win a huge amount of money and perform before the Queen (Elizabeth not @SimonCowell)."

If you've read our recent feature on Blockbuster Threequels (and if you haven't, you should), you might have noticed that the third entry in many franchises was not the last. They continued on past that number, as the market dictated, and now it seems as if enough people paid for "Men In Black 3" that we might get another one. Sony has tasked Oren Uziel ("The Kitchen Sink") to rewrite "21 Jump Street 2" (cool) and "Men In Black 4" (no). While MIB3 might have been the lowest grossing domestic earner by a long almost $100 million, the increasingly important overseas sales were insane, pushing it to over $620 million, the most successful of the entire franchise. Money talks folks, so that's why Sony is gonna try to make this happen. But as always, there are caveats, and they come in the form of: Will Smith. Dude is tremendously picking and who knows if his...

Thanks to Veronica Mars, TV fanaticism is about to get really expensive.
We've all heard the news: creative figure responsible for a series with cult followings starts Kickstarter for a project and it gets the project funded in 24 hours, smashing previous funding records thanks to rabid fans. Such is the story for the Veronica Mars film, but this story and its impact has a connection to the way that the video game industry's business model has paid.
In particular, they've found ways to make lots of money from those most dedicated to their products, and it's looking like dedicated fans of TV shows both past and present are going to get the 'opportunity' to show their support by spending lots and lots of money.
There is a very clear gaming analogue to the Veronica Mars film, and it's Double Fine Adventure. It was a Kickstarter project started by Double Fine Productions and Tim Schafer,...

Storm returns!
Speaking to Jay Leno in "The Tonight Show," Halle Berry confirmed that she would be donning her Storm costume again for "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Why? Because according to her, it's a great role and "those residual checks don.t hurt." See? Money talks especially Marvel dough!
Berry added that Storm is a character that she loves and the fans really dig the whole series. She said, "They really love Storm. It.s like family. It.s fun to get back together with Hugh and everybody. It.s good fun."
Bryan Singer will also return to the franchise to direct. The last "X-Men" film he helmed was 2003's "X2." Matthew Vaughn, who created the last "X-Men" film, the fantastic 2011's "First Class," co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Kinberg based on John Byrne and Chris Claremont's comic book.

If there’s one thing that the movie industry loves (besides money, of course), it’s a good David vs. Goliath story. Each year, as the Oscars race heats up, there’s always a focus on whether independent movies in contention can take the prizes from big studio films.
Over the past decade or so, the tide has turned toward indie flicks more than was historically the norm. Recently, though, a situation has developed in which studios are trying harder to get back in the game but sometimes lag behind their smaller competition. This year proves an especially interesting case, since in most of the categories it looks like studio offerings will have a good chance to best the indies.
It’s hardly a guarantee, and it’s still very early, but any Oscar prognosticator worth his or her salt is leaning toward bigger studio...

It looks like Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are teaming up for more Transformers. At the Con X Kc in Kansas City, Missouri, actor Glenn Morshower, who appeared in all three films and provides an introduction to the Transformers 3D ride at Universal Studios, said he was informed that Spielberg and Bay were at work on not just a 4th Transformers movie, but a 5th one as well.
“After I did the opening ceremonies for the ride, Steven Spielberg walked up to me and chatted and said ‘You know we’ve got you set to do the fourth one and probably the fifth one on the heels of that,” he told Examiner. “So, I guess in December we are on our way to making 4 and 5.”
Am I the only one who is shocked? Who actually liked these movies besides Armond White? Dark Of The Moon has a 42/100 metascore on Metacritic,...

With just over 24 hours left before Ufc 152 gets underway at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, The Star is reporting that tickets are still available. This may come as a surprise considering the fact that the main card includes two Ufc title bouts and the main event features Jon Jones, one of the organization’s most polarizing figures.
The recent cancellation of Ufc 151 due to Jones’ refusal to take a fight against Chael Sonnen on short notice may have led some to quickly blame Jones and his trainers for the black eye that the sport has received in the last few weeks.
However, the failure to sell out the Air Canada Centre cannot be solely placed at the feet of the light heavyweight champ. Rather, it is more likely that the card’s initial lack of star power, mixed with a perceived oversaturation of mixed martial arts in recent months...

Warner Bros. have put out some fantastic shorts during their DC Nation programming block on Cartoon Network. They are evolving one of those into a series – Teen Titans Go! It’s almost a continuation of the old Teen Titans animated series but either way, sounds like fun. I know a lot of folks were hoping Sbff would also move on to a half hour series as well but from what I’ve been hearing, it’s not likely and my question is – why?
Warner Bros. don’t believe a “girls” show has the same selling power as a “boys” show and I’d like to prove them wrong. I’d point them to the huge successes that were Lauren Faust’s Power Puff Girls (Edit for clarity, I know Craig McCracken created Ppg, Faust also worked on the franchise. Sorry if I confused anyone!) and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic were,...

Finally! Well, almost finally… The university presidents still have to sign their official approval on the new plan, but a college football playoff is right around the corner for the Football Bowl Subdivision (The Fbs is the top level of collegiate football). It should be implemented for the 2014 season. The Bowl Championship Series (Bcs) is on life support, and the plug will soon be pulled.
For the first time college football will have a champion that will have earned their title. A 4 team playoff is a great start, and by far better than the former Bcs championship game fiasco that still saw controversial outcomes. The plan that appears eminent is that a selection committee will pick the 4 teams to participate in the playoff, with the semifinal games being played in the existing major bowls on a rotation basis.
Some schools could argue that they deserve a place among football’s final four,...

Money talks and it obviously has in the case of The Wolverine: a one-off payment of $12.8 million from the Gillard Government, the Federal Government.s location offset, a direct incentive from the Nsw Government, and Nsw payroll tax relief all helped secure the sixth film in the X-Men science fiction franchise for Australia.
The Nsw Government isn.t saying how much cash its putting in but all these incentives have obviously exceeded the negative effect of the strong Australian dollar, which is causing most Hollywood blockbusters to stay clear of Australia.
It is highly unusual for the Federal Government to make one-off payments outside the official incentives: in a media release jointly issued by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Arts Minister Simon Crean it was stated that it is equivalent to an increase in the existing location offset to 30 per cent. Whether this is a positive sign that the...

When he’s not punching wolves with shards of glass taped to his hands in “The Grey,” rescuing his daughter with his “particular set of skills” in “Taken,” or locked in a brutal battle in “Wrath of the Titans,” we imagine that actor Liam Neeson is probably a nice guy. Though as you can see from the string of films we mentioned before, lately Hollywood likes to cast him in the sort of ass-kicking antihero roles that were usually reserved for Charles Bronson in the ‘70s. Though with January’s release of “The Grey” faring quite well both critically and financially, we can see why a Liam Neeson actioner is a sure bet. So that’s why there’s another one already in store, only this time, Neeson will have to brave some high altitudes.

Directed by: Tyler Perry
Cast: Tyler Perry, Thandie Newton, Brian Tyler, Gabrielle Union
Running Time: 1 hr 51 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 24, 2012
Plot: A successful CEO named Wesley Deeds (Perry) reaches out to a single mother (Newton) who works as a janitor in his building.
Who’S It For? As many of his films are, this is for Tyler Perry devotees only. Acceptance of his previous trash is required so as not to laugh at his recent misfire. Outsiders to Perry will be snickering to themselves throughout the entirety of Good Deeds.
Overall
Tyler Perry is a terrible actor, a terrible director, and a terrible writer. Of course this isn’t breaking news, but it’s a statement bound to bounce around anyone’s head while trying to suffer through his very bad Good Deeds.
