Which film will follow on from ‘Roma’ in winning the prize?
Submissions for the best international feature film award at the 2020 Academy Awards have started to come in, and Screen is keeping a running list of each film below.
This is the first year the award will be given under the new name of ‘best international feature film’, after a change in April from ‘foreign-language film’.
The eligibility rules remain the same: an international feature film is defined as a feature-length motion picture produced outside the Us with a predominantly non-English dialogue track and can include animated and documentary features.

There are some stories that are almost too unbelievable to be real, but sometimes, the best people to spin those stories are those closest to the event. Sundance Film Festival World Drama entry “Un Traductor” intriguingly finds directors Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso bringing the story of their father’s experience to life on the big screen.
Starring Rodrigo Santoro, Maricel Álvarez, Yoandra Suárez, Nikita Semenov, Jorge Carlos Pérez Herrera, Genadijs Dolganovs, Milda Gecaite, Laura Mia, Ravelo Hernández, and Aleksandra Maslennikova, “Un Traductor” follows a Russian literature professor in Cuba, who is called in to help translate, when children affected by the Chernobyl disaster are sent to Cuba for treatment.

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

While "Midnight In Paris" is still rolling out in theaters across the country, Woody Allen is already at work on his next film set to shoot this summer in Rome, continuing his diligent one-movie-per-year work ethic that has persisted for four decades. X-Men: First Class – James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence
Movie of the Week
X-Men: First Class
The Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence
The Plot: In 1963, Charles Xavier (McAvoy) starts up a school and later a team, for humans with superhuman abilities. Among them is Erik Lensherr (Fassbender), his best friend, and future archenemy.
The Buzz: The film’s preliminary reviews have been solid, with 41 favorable reviews to 1 unfavorable, as of today at Rottentomates. The cast is really strong too. However, I personally have zero interest in this film, as it looks to have zero style (other than the standard nerdy film-version X-Men vibe), but perhaps this will be the first good X-Men film? I loved the comic books, was a pretty big reader for awhile there, and I’ve always felt like, of all the Marvel films, the X-Men films have fallen the furthest from their book.

Chicago – The feel bad movie of 2010 has finally arrived in stores. Pardon me for withholding my enthusiasm. Although Alejandro González Iñárritu’s fourth feature has its share of indelible images, its familiar themes and unrelenting solemnity causes the senses to become numbed rather than engaged. The film offers 147 minutes of pure bleakness with a couple booger jokes thrown in for last-minute levity.
Only the shattering performances from Javier Bardem and Maricel Álvarez make “Biutiful” function as something more than a gorgeously lensed dirge. This is the first Iñárritu film I’ve seen that feels too long. Without the Rubix cube-like structure of his previous features, this linear descent into despair feels naggingly one note, perhaps illustrating that Iñárritu’s fractured editing was primarily what kept his viewers’ attention rapt during cumbersome dramas such as “21 Grams” and “Babel.”

"Leonardo DiCaprio Will play villian Calvin Candie in Tarantino's "Django Unchained" says a tweet two hours ago by L.A.-based podcast host Jeff Goldsmith.
Quentin Tarantino originally wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play Hans Landa in "Inglourious Basterds" before ultimately casting Christoph Waltz in the role.
Now he may have scored the famed star to play a villainous plantation owner. No confirmation of any kind has yet emerged, and Goldsmith carefully labels it a "Casting Rumor" only.

Mathieu Kassovitz and Gabriel Byrne have joined the cast while Naomi Campbell has been offered a role in Costa-Gavras' financial industry drama "Le Capital".
At last report, Vincent Cassel was also set to star in this critical look at the global banking system. Set in Paris, London, New York, Davos and Tokyo, shooting begins in September. [Source: Variety]

After winning most critics (including ours) over with his Gallic adventure in "Midnight In Paris," Woody Allen is to continue his ridiculously prolific run averaging a film a year taking his European holiday to Rome. In some ways, Biutiful is the ultimate test of an actor's ability. He is in every scene, almost every shot and there is no trickery to hide a false emotion. Bardem owns all 2+ hours. He plays Uxbal, an illegal immigrant middle man - he gets work and supplies for African and Chinese immigrants while paying off the police and skimming for himself. He is also a part-time psychic.
He lives in Barcelona although it's not particularly recognizable. Uxbal could be living anywhere in any city. He's a lost man in both work and family. He has two children, Ana and Mateo, from his bi-polar wife Maramba (Maricel Álvarez). Maramba is a controlling woman and a little unstable to be the motherly type but Uxbal does love her which most of the time is a problem.
Uxbal is diagnosed with cancer.

Where do I begin in describing the sheer shittyness of Uxbal’s (Javier Bardem) life? Ok, I’ll start with his wife Marambra (Maricel Álvarez), who is not only bipolar but also an alcoholic and an abusive parent. We first meet Marambra as she dances donning only panties above Uxbal’s brother, Tito (Eduard Fernández), while Uxbal is on the other end of the telephone line discussing with Tito the sale of their deceased father’s grave to a shopping mall developer. We realize immediately why Uxbal left Marambra -- a massage therapist who, more than likely, does not shy away from happy endings -- and how he earned full custody of their 7 year-old son, Mateo (Guillermo Estrella), and 10 year-old daughter, Ana (Hanaa Bouchaib).

Chicago – In the midst of life’s journey, what may seem like a long time suddenly can become short, what seems like the routine suddenly becomes desperate. The theme of these changes and the effect on a dying soul is explored in “Biutiful.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, best known for “Babel” and “Amores Perros,” and continues with his exploration of happenstance and chance encounters, this time fueled by a man who literally feels his life ebbing away.
Javier Bardem is Uxbal, a shady character on the streets of Barcelona, Spain, who acts as a facilitator for black market immigration labor. He is raising two children on his own, after separating from his wife Marambra (Maricel Álvarez) due to her addiction problems. Despite copious sums of cash, Uxbal prefers a more modest existence, mostly because his Barcelona is one of the shadows and squalor, areas not frequented by tourists.

Biutiful
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu
Written by Alejandro González Iñárritu and Armando Bo
2010, Spain / Mexico
Ornately, elaborately disastrous, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first venture following the schism that separated him from longtime screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, Biutiful, can’t be faulted for its lack of ambition. While the film scales back somewhat from Arriaga’s tendency to tie together a half-dozen or so disparate characters, Biutiful somehow manages to be even more scattered than Babel or Amores Perros despite its relatively narrowed focus. Working in collaboration with two new screenwriters, Nicolás Giacobone and Armando Bo, Iñárritu here opts for thematic glut instead of character glut, and the result is one of the most profoundly confused films to emerge in years.

On paper, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu's new film, Biutiful, is a tough sell: it's grim from the outset, and things don't really improve over the course of its 148 brutal minutes. However, the ride is more than satisfying. The haunting performance of Spanish actor Javier Bardem - whose startling physical transformation in the film was filmed chronologically over five months - mesmerizes. A shady street criminal living on the never-before-filmed underbelly of Barcelona, Bardem's Uxbal receives the news that he is dying of cancer, setting into motion his desperate attempt to make sure his children will be cared for after he is gone. (Their mother is a bipolar-but-loving mess, played by the wonderful performance artist Maricel Álvarez.) Through Uxbal's 'business' dealings, we get to see the heartbreakingly precarious existence of Europe's immigrants (legal and otherwise), as they work in illegal factories and out on the streets. The recognizable features of Barcelona - Sagrada Familia,...

This is the journey of Uxbal, a conflicted man who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amidst the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. His livelihood is earned out of bounds, his sacrifices for his children know no bounds. Like life itself, this is a circular tale that ends where it begins. As fate encircles him and thresholds are crossed, a dim, redemptive road brightens, illuminating the inheritances bestowed from father to child, and the paternal guiding hand that navigates life's corridors, whether bright, bad - or biutiful.
It opens in the Us on December 29 2010.

This is the Pure Movies trailer for Biutiful, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, Babel) and starring Javier Bardem, Maricel Álvarez, Hanaa Bouchaib, Guillermo Estrella, Eduard Fernández and Cheikh Ndiaye. After having globe-trotted with Babel, I thought I had explored enough multiple lines, fractured structures and crossing narratives. Each of the films I have made has been shot in a different language, in a different country, with different structures and scales. At the end of Babel, I was so exhausted that I joked my next film would be about just one character, in one single city, with a straight narrative line and in my own original language . . . and here I am. Biutiful is all that I haven’t done: a character-driven, linear story.

- To be forever known as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's first foray into a post-Guillermo Arriaga era, Variety reports that the Mexican filmmaker begins filming his latest feature in Barcelona as early as next week. Not surprisingly, after having A-listers Sean Penn and Brad Pitt topline his previous pictures, the studio backed project has secured the most in-demand, Oscar-winning international actor in the biz today. After dropping out from Rob Marshall’s Nine, Javier Bardem will be prominently featured in the crime drama entitled Biutiful (pronunciation of “beautiful”). Details are mum on the project, but the one line synopsis tells us that this is about a man embroiled in shady dealings who is confronted by a childhood friend, now a policeman. Apparently little-known newbie Argentinean actress Maricel Álvarez will board the project and Rodrigo Prieto is the Dop. ...
