Chicago – Clive Owen is an immensely charismatic actor, though he seems to fare better in a world without children. His best roles either place him an ensemble of fellow adults (as in “Gosford Park” and “Sin City”) or require him to protect a baby too young to be much of a conversationalist (as in “Children of Men” or “Shoot ‘Em Up”).
In the failed Oscar bait drama “The Boys Are Back,” Owen plays Simon Carr, a recently widowed father who’s forced to care for his two sons, moody teen Harry (George MacKay, looking like Rupert Grint’s stand-in) and pint-sized brat Artie (insufferable Nicholas McAnulty). The film basically amounts to a Robin Williams heart-warmer minus the shtick, with Owen as the anti-conformist goofball who raises his children exactly as he pleases, much to the chagrin of every uptight female he encounters along the way.

"The Boys Are Back" is currently available on DVD.
The Clive Owen comedy-drama hit the stores today released through Miramax Films and Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Based on the true story of Australian personality Simon Carr, the movie comes complete with unique special features as part of its home package.
Owen, headliner of "Closer" and "Children of Men," stars as Joe Warr, a sportswriter whose comfortable life is disrupted by the death of his wife. Already unsure of how to take care of their 6-year-old son (Nicholas McAnulty) alone, Joe's struggle in single parenting is increased when he also has to take in another son (George MacKay) from a previous marriage, a surly teenager whom he barely knows. But even though fatherhood has never been his strong suit Joe takes on his task with gusto, teaching his sons about living life with a passion, with all the bumps along the way.

A Prophet (18)
(Jacques Audiard, 2009, France) Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif. 155 mins
Arriving pre-garlanded with awards and acclaim, this French movie certainly demands seeing, though it's less a radical reinvention of the prison thriller genre than a rock-solid update (with the odd mystical touch). The key innovation is that our selected inmate is a French Arab, who painfully progresses from timid newcomer to hardened player, negotiating between ethnic factions both inside and out. It's an extreme story in every sense, but newcomer Rahim carries the weight magnificently, and it stays rooted in present-day reality without feeling the need to ram a message down our throats about it.
The Boys Are Back (12A)
(Scott Hicks, 2009, Aus/UK) Clive Owen, Nicholas McAnulty. 104 mins
Owen opens up and shows his sensitive side as a blokey sports journalist in Australia, trying to cope with single fatherhood, and reconciling his two sons by different women.

The Hurt Locker (Summit Entertainment) Absorbing character study follows the leader (Jeremy Renner) of a bomb squad unit in Iraq and his growing addiction to the adrenaline-fueled life and death edge that he and his men must walk on a daily basis. Director Kathryn Bigelow, an unheralded great filmmaker for nearly two decades, has finally hit paydirt with this gut-wrenching examination of war as drug, as opposed to hell. That said, The Hurt Locker is 2/3 of a great movie that takes a wild left turn in a subplot involving Renner’s character and that of a local boy to whom he takes a shine, and never quite recovers its momentum. In spite of that hiccup, it remains one of the best films of 2009 and, thus far, the finest cinematic exploration of America’s war in the Middle East. Also available on Blu-ray disc, in...

Clive Owen's been getting a lot of buzz for The Boys Are Back, wherein he plays a recently widowed man coping with his loss and his two sons. And just so you're prepared for the release next Friday, we have a clip from the film right here. This scene takes place when Joe Warr (Owen) goes to the airport with his son Artie (Nicholas McAnulty) to collect his teenage son Harry (George McKay), the alienated product of his first marriage who comes to join him. It'll give you a little taste of the family dynamic here, but comes early enough in the film that this isn't spoilerific. The Boys Are Back is out here on Friday January 22, so you can assess for yourself whether Clive Owen deserves the awards buzz he's been getting at that point.

Clive Owen has said that that his upcoming movie The Boys Are Back is unlike all his previous films. The Closer actor told The Sunday Times that his scenes with young star Nicholas McAnulty were key to his role. Owen said: "I knew this was going to be completely different from anything I'd done before. For starters, there was the little one, which I knew would bring out something new in me. "The thing about a kid of that age is they're not acting. They're immediate and instinctive, and (more)...

Clive Owen Gets Back
By
Alex Simon
Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.
It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house...

Scott Hicks returns to the South Australian sun for his latest film The Boys Are Back, and echos his greatest commercial triumph, the David Helfgott biopic Shine, with this family in transition drama. Clive Owen leads the film as a recently widowed sports writer and father to two boys, Artie (Nicholas McAnulty) who lives with him in Australia and Harry, his child from a previous marriage who is ensconced at an English boarding school, played by George MacKay. While this road has been walked before Hicks and Owen combine to create a poignant film which maintains an original voice despite the crowded arena.
Dealing with the tragic, early death of his wife (Laura Fraser)and the onslaught of parental responsibility Joe Warr (Owen) retreats into his grief with a stoic facade and the creation of what he considers to be the best environment for his young son: Hog’s Heaven.

The Boys Are Back opens with Joe (Clive Owen) blasting through the surf of an undisclosed beach in his Land Rover Discovery, kicking up water and sand as he clips along at a rather impressive speed. He gleefully laughs, then we see the trunk of the SUV, adorned with Joe’s son, who of course thinks this is great fun. As soon as the son entered the picture, I became white knuckled, and fretted over the safety of the actor portraying Joe’s son. I never really recovered from that scene, and kind of despised Joe throughout the movie. That makes is rather difficult to be sympathetic to his plight.
Joe is a sports writer at an Australian newspaper, and is happily married with a seven year old son, Artie (Nicholas McAnulty). He travels frequently for work and is somewhat of an absentee father. His wife Katy (played by Laura Fraser...

Atlanta – Sometimes human tragedy hits dramatically, but other times it subtly, imperceptibly, alters the intrinsic fibers of everyday life in undetectable ways. That is the premise behind Scott Hicks’ film “The Boys Are Back.” It is the story not of death, but of the strategy human beings devise to cope, to defend and to protect themselves against pain and loss. And though it sometimes reveals the distasteful, ugly ways in which people interact while coping with tragedy, it is also a beautifully shot and truthful portrayal of human frailties and their reactions to loss.
At the center of one family’s tragedy is a father named Joe (Clive Owen). He is a parent to two sons, each one from a different marriage – a British expatriate who followed his pregnant mistress to Australia where he divorced his British first wife, married the mistress Katy, and made a fresh start with his new family.

The players: Director: Scott Hicks, Writer: Allan Cubitt, Cast: Clive Owen, Laura Fraser, Emma Booth, George MacKay, Nicholas McAnulty
Facts of interest: Scott Hicks recently directed "No Reservations."
The plot: The film follows a father who must raise his two boys alone after his wife passes away.
Our thoughts: Chances are, Scott Hicks’ excellent new drama “The Boys Are Back” will bring you to tears during the first 15 minutes. The film doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to establishing its tragic story line, which is exactly why it successfully captured my full attention in no time. That’s a strong start for a strong, very touching big-screen experience.

Scott Hicks: One Of The Boys
By
Alex Simon
Scott Hicks made his bones as a filmmaker the old-fashioned way, paying his dues as a crew member during the Australian film industry’s birth in the 1970s. Born in Uganda March 4, 1953, and raised in Kenya, England and finally Australia, Hicks worked his way up to assistant director for soon-to-be big names such as Peter Weir and Bruce Beresford before moving into directing industrial films and documentaries for television. Hicks didn’t direct his first feature, Freedom, until 1982, and had to wait for his second, in 1996, to put him on the A-list. Shine was the true story of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott, and his battle with mental illness. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won a Best Actor statuette for Geoffrey Rush, who played Helfgott as an adult.

George MacKay, Clive Owen and Nicholas McAnulty in The Boys are Back
Photo: Miramax Miramax is positioning The Boys are Back as a potential Oscar vehicle for Clive Owen. My suggestion would be to go into it forgetting about the hope for high praise and you will find a mildly unique entry in the sobby broken family melodrama genre and a solid performance by Owen that doesn't have the steam for a nomination, but it's well worthy of praise. The film itself does its best to buck the genre, setting a male character as the lead whereas we are most often watching a single woman bounce around her hectic life trying to take care of the kids and deal with the loss of a loved one. I also think the Australian setting will be enough to convince some stateside moviegoers they are watching something different than they are used to,...

It's been a while since Clive Owen's had to carry a movie on his broad shoulders, and in the upcoming Scott Hicks film The Boys are Back, he's front-and-center with nary a gun or glamorous love interest at his disposal. In a more intimate turn, Owen plays sportswriter Joe Warr, who struggles to raise both his six-year-old son (Nicholas McAnulty) and a teenage son from an earlier marriage (George MacKay) after his wife dies of cancer.
Adapted from Simon Carr's memoir, The Boys are Back espouses Carr's philosophy of always saying yes to your children, and Owen says it caused him to examine his own relationship with his daughters, Hannah and Eve. In a conversation with Movieline last week in Los Angeles, Owen opened up about his cinematic and real-life families, the nature of grief, and whether or not he's gearing up to do a sequel with Spike Lee.

This week, contrasting approaches to filmmaking bring about balance and equilibrium. Experimentalism (Sally Potter's "Rage" and Michael Almereyda's "Paradise") collides head on with tried and tested formulas (the Clive Owen starrer "The Boys Are Back" and a remake of "Fame").

After the last few years, we've grown quite accustomed to Clive Owen as the headlining, slick star, whether that be chowing down carrots and shooting people up, living black and white and dangerous as Dwight, or dealing with a world that no longer has children. What's easy to forget in all of his fame, however, is that the man has more than an irresistible delivery and on-screen charm. He's an actor with subtlety, one whose very presence can change.
