After Alex Garland scored big with his surprise hit Ex Machina, Paramount (then run by Brad Grey and Rob Moore) looked very savvy when in late 2014 the studio landed the British filmmaker to adapt the sci-fi novel Annihilation.
Now, however, just ahead of the movie’s February 2018 release, Paramount, now run by chairman Jim Gianopulos, is partially unloading the movie.
The studio is finalizing a deal with Netflix to take over the international distribution of the film, which stars Natalie Portman. Paramount will still release the movie in the U.S. and Canada, as well as in China, while Netflix...

After a year of flops, executive committee takes helm at the studio.
After weeks of speculation, the studio’s chairman and CEO is on his way out after a disastrous 2016 at the box office, insiders say.
Brad Grey’s tenure at Paramount Pictures had been on shaky ground after a string of releases crashed and burned and now control of the studio is reportedly in the hands of an interim cabal of senior executives until a replacement is found.
The operating committee is understood to comprise Amy Powell, the highly regarded head of TV and digital, film chief Marc Evans, COO Andrew Gumpert, and marketing and distribution supremo Megan Colligan.
The group covers all aspects of the studio and has been given oversight by Bob Bakish, who was appointed CEO of parent company Viacom in December after vice-chairman Shari Redstone and her father Sumner Redstone called off a possible Viacom-CBS merger.

As far as the box office is concerned, the Martin Luther King holiday weekend might better be dubbed Memorial Day, as six new wide releases are weak or dying. Despite a wide array of product which should have boosted totals, this weekend looks to be down 19 per cent from last year.
On the other hand, Oscar contenders “Hidden Figures” (20th Century Fox) and “La La Land”(Lionsgate) continued to surf cresting audience enthusiasm to place first and second for the three day weekend.
School vacation Monday results may boost Universal’s “Sing” and possibly Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” to higher positions. Animated musical “Sing” is holding well, with a 33 per cent drop. “Rogue One,” though now the top-grossing 2016 domestic release, is falling far faster than juggernaut “Force Awakens” a year ago.

Jj Abrams on Monday evening hinted at his support for Screening Room as he collected the CinemaCon Showman Of The Year award from the very people who stand to lose the most should the disruptive distribution platform become reality.

Abrams had already made public his support for Sean Parker and Prem Akkaraju’s controversial proposal before CinemaCon and offered some insight when he took to the Colosseum stage.

Many theatres in the Us are refusing to show Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension because of a controversial release plan.
Paramount agreed an early video on-demand release for the horror film, which means the movie will be made available online much sooner after its release in cinemas.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ghost Dimension will only be released in 1,400 locations in North America as a result, compared to 2,883 for the last film in the series The Marked Ones.
The VOD deal means that customers could be seeing the movie at home as early as six to seven weeks after the film is released.
While the film is estimated to earn around $10m - $12m in the Us, it's expected to recoup more in the following weeks as a result.

Who says that Tom Cruise is damaged goods at the domestic box office? Taking $56 million at home, and another $65 million abroad, "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation" is not just a hit, but there's already talk of a sequel. Cruise recently said "Mission: Impossible 6" could shoot as soon as next summer, and Paramount confirmed a follow up is in the works. “We’re very happy to be developing this movie with Tom,” studio honcho Rob Moore told Variety. “There’s no question that Ethan Hunt deserves another film.” But, for all this good cheer, it's almost a miracle the movie landed without a hitch. Every year the movies seem to be dying. The writing is on the wall with attendance numbers and box office receipts and the Golden Age of TV. Will people still go to the movies if they can now watch high quality, HD programming from their own home?
Theater chains themselves have been reluctant to give in to Netflix and VOD, but at the risk of being made obsolete entirely, two chains are doing an experiment suggesting they may be willing to play ball. THR reported this week that Paramount, AMC Theaters, and Cineplex have struck a deal regarding two of their upcoming films, the new Paranormal Activity movie, and Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, both October releases. Traditionally, movies are not available on VOD or digital release until three to four months after their initial run in theaters is over, which can be anywhere from a month to six weeks for genre movies.

In the ten years since Martin Scorsese manager Brad Grey took over the reins as Paramount Chairman and CEO, his Vice Chairman and chief operating lieutenant Rob Moore, who manages day-to-day operations at the studio, has remained in place. But the presidents of Paramount’s Motion Picture Group and Production have moved through a revolving door, from Donald De Line, Gail Berman and Alli Shearmur to Brad Weston, John Lesher and finally, Adam Goodman, who was trained at DreamWorks by Stacey Snider and was recently pushed out after six years in favor of a studio production deal. After reportedly talking to at least two rival studio production heads (Sony's Michael De Luca and Doug Belgrad), Grey has opted to promote four-year production president Marc Evans, a studio veteran of 12 years, who will bring stability rather than turmoil. Evans joined Paramount in 2003, ahead of Goodman's arrival, so he's not associated with his regime.

When Interstellar is released in theaters next month, it will play in some locations before others. Theaters with 35mm, 70mm, and 70mm IMAX projection systems will begin showing Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi as early as the night of Tuesday, November 4 and the wee morning hours of November 5, while those that have embraced a digital-only agenda will have to wait a couple extra days to begin screening Nolan's upcoming epic. This has some exhibitors (and audiences) feeling giddy, as they'll be able to get a two-day head start on screening one of the fall's most anticipated and buzzed-about releases. However, theater owners who have made the switch to digital-only projection are, well, pretty upset about the move. Michael Bay has extended his first-look deal with Paramount.
The Transformers director has signed a three-year extension, and the deal has also been expanded to include another of his production companies, Bay Films, as well as Platinum Dune.
The new deal comes after the latest instalment of the Transformers series, Age of Extinction, hit $967 million (£573m) at the global box office just under a month after its release, The Wrap reports.
Bay said he feels like "part of the Paramount family" after working with the studio for the past five years. He signed his original deal in October 2009.
The director added: "There is a synergy there that feels different than any other place in Hollywood.
"From Brad Grey and Rob Moore, where my relationship goes back more than a decade, to my very good friend Adam Goodman, and to Philippe Dauman, who has put so much trust in me, and...

The record $317 million that Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed in China in 31 days is impressive, but the struggle the studio has endured to collect a mere 25 percent of that total shows that mining gold behind the Great Wall is a daunting task. "It was definitely all worth it," says studio vice chair Rob Moore. "There's growing pains for everybody, but certainly the result was spectacular." In some ways -- such as shutting down blocks of Hong Kong or an entire nature preserve to allow filming -- China offered more cooperation than the studio might expect in

China Movie Media Group (Cmmg) announced it will open a Us office and has teamed up with Paramount to market the imminent summer release Transformers: Age Of Extinction in China.
“The China film market has maintained a growth of 30% each year and has become the world’s second biggest box office market,” said Zhang Gen Ming, CEO and founder of Cmmg.
“The establishment of our new La office is only the beginning of the relationship between the two biggest countries in the rising global film market. In addition, because there were so many Chinese components to TF4 it seemed like a natural and compelling partnership.”

Los Angeles (AP) — After weathering a sea of controversy, "Noah" arrived in first place at the weekend box office. Paramount's biblical epic starring Russell Crowe in the titular role opened with $44 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The imaginative take on the tale of Noah's Ark from "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky led some religious groups to claim the story had been inaccurately depicted and prompted Paramount to add a disclaimer to marketing materials noting that "artistic license has been taken" in telling the story. The polarizing attention apparently paid off for "Noah," which features such additions to the well-known Bible story as angelic rock creatures and chic wardrobes for Noah and his family. "Noah," which also stars Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson, also sailed smoothly in 22 international markets, such as Russia and Australia, earning $33.6 million abroad. "It certainly feels like the film has really connected with both mainstream moviegoers...

Las Vegas (AP) — Mark Wahlberg, star of the upcoming "Transformers: Age of Extinction," is promising the fourth installment of the Michael Bay-directed franchise will be a huge hit. "For moviegoers all over the world, I guarantee this will take it up a notch," Wahlberg said Monday at the annual movie-theater convention CinemaCon. Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said Bay was hesitant to return to the franchise until they were able to zero in on the right story and cast that would capture his imagination. "Michael promised me it would be a very different, stand-alone movie, which it absolutely is," said Wahlberg. "It is bigger and better than the other three (films) combined. This will be the biggest movie of 2014." In the action film, Wahlberg, who reteams with Bay after last year's "Pain and Gain," plays Cade Yeager, an automobile mechanic who discovers a rundown truck, which is really a transformer.

There's a lot at stake with the release this Friday of "Noah," and not just for the filmmakers or the studio that sunk a reported $160 million into the film.
In a year when Hollywood is releasing several Bible-inspired movies, "Noah" has become the test case for a number of issues -- whether Hollywood can earn the trust of fundamentalist Christians (and whether it's worth risking money and controversy even to try), whether it's possible to make big-budget spectacles that please both religious viewers and secular action-film fans, and whether directors can make Bible-themed movies that adhere to doctrine without compromising artistically or making dull propaganda.
It would be easy to see this saga as a story of just two players. On the one side is Hollywood, represented here by "Noah" studio Paramount, which would like to attract Christian viewers, and which has practically bent over backward to do so, testing...

The trades got into it this week with Variety floating the boat that Noah star Russell Crowe‘s attempt to meet Pope Francis was spurned by the Vatican, while THR refuted that was ever real because of the feeling Crowe’s stardom would attract too much attention. So what’s the truth? Deadline has learned that Noah star Crowe, director Darren Aronofsky and Paramount executive Rob Moore did in fact get to meet Pope Francis today, after the Vatican extended an olive branch and hosted the trio in the official VIP section of this morning’s Udienza. I think the studio was a little coy earlier in the week. This was something that Aronofsky wanted to do after he’d just made this Biblical epic. He was going to be near Rome promoting it, and has been moved by the Pope’s message of tolerance, feeding the poor and preserving the planet.

This is just taking things too far as we are clearly getting closer and closer to the Production Code days of cinema as The Hollywood Reporter reveals Darren Aronofsky's Noah will come with a disclaimer, and not just on the movie itself, but the marketing: Future marketing materials for the film -- including an upcoming online trailer, the film's website, all print and radio ads, as well as a percentage of the film's online and broadcast ads, will contain the following message: "The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis." And I thought critics of The Wolf of Wall Street were taking...

It may have been the first studio to go with all-digital format film releases domestically starting with "The Wolf of Wall Street," but Paramount has had to make one exception to that commitment - Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar".
In a statement today, Paramount's vice chairman Rob Moore says: "Although we anticipate the majority of the studio’s future releases to be executed in digital formats across the U.S., select exceptions will be made."
The first will be "Interstellar," which Nolan shot on both 35mm film and on IMAX (like he did with both "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises"). The movie will be released in both film and digital formats on November 7th.
While most directors have made the move over to digital, Nolan is one of the most famous holdouts who is sticking to film for the time being.

Noah, Darren Aronofsky’s big-budget biblical epic, doesn’t arrive in theaters until next March, but the Oscar-nominated director and Paramount reportedly are already feeling the winds of a brewing storm. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has generated unfavorable reactions in early test screenings, and the studio is leaning on Aronofsky to make changes — changes that the Black Swan director apparently is resisting. “Darren is not made for studio films,” The Reporter quotes a talent rep close to the movie as saying. “He’s very dismissive. He doesn’t care about [Paramount's] opinion.”

With Noah, director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan, The Fountain) has apparently made what can best be described as a "Darren Aronofsky movie". Word surrounding the pic suggests he's taken the Biblical character and turned him into something of an extreme environmentalist. Aronofsky has said as much in the past, saying "Noah was the first environmentalist" and adding, "Hopefully they'll let me make it." Well, they did, and apparently some aspects aren't going over so well in certain circles as test screenings have started to take place. A major piece of contention seems to be the film's third act, which The Hollywood Reporter says may have the potential of alienating the huge Christian audience while screenings in New York (for a largely Jewish audience), in Arizona (Christians) and in Orange County, Calif. (general public) have all "generated troubling reactions". I hadn't heard of it until now, but apparently faith-based...

Darren Aronofsky's Noah has sparked controversy among test audiences.
The upcoming biblical epic, which stars Russell Crowe as Noah and Emma Watson as his adopted daughter Ila, has been screened to "key groups" with an interest in the subject matter, including a largely Jewish audience in New York, a largely Christian audience in Arizona and a general screening in California.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, all three screenings have generated "troubling reactions", prompting Paramount to request changes from Aronofsky.
It is unclear whether Aronofsky has retained his right to final cut on the film, or whether this has been removed in light of the poor feedback, but the director is reportedly resistant to the changes suggested.
Among the studio's reported concerns are the film's extensive use of visual effects, and the challenge of creating a third act that will not alienate Christian audiences.

Mixed reactions at test screenings for key demographics credited for wrangle over final cut of Biblical epic starring Russell Crowe as the ark-man
With a high-profile cast including Russell Crowe as everybody's favourite antediluvian patriarch, it has been billed as a blockbuster fantasy spectacular to resurrect the biblical epic for the 21st century. But Darren Aronofsky's Noah looks to be running into trouble after it emerged that the American auteur director of Black Swan and The Wrestler is embroiled in a fight for control of his ambitious new film with studio Paramount.
The problem, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is that the two key demographics identified by producers as critical to the box office office success of the film have both reacted negatively at test screenings. Christian viewers in Arizona did not much like it, possibly because the movie plays fast and loose with its biblical subject matter, and...

Darren Aronofsky has never been a particularly audience-friendly filmmaker; his first Oscar nomination was for the gorgeously disturbing ballerina breakdown drama "Black Swan," and his first move, "Pi," features a self-trepanation scene. Is it any wonder that his Biblical epic "Noah" is giving audiences similarly confounded reactions?
"Noah," which stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Douglas Booth, is scheduled for release on March 28, but Paramount and Aronofsky are reportedly wrestling for control over the final cut. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that some of the test audiences are having rather "troubling reactions" to the film, which could be problematic if the studio is pushing for the religious audience. The NYC test screening was "largely Jewish," a screening in Arizona was predominantly Christian, and the screening in Orange County, Calif., was for the general public. This week's The Hollywood Reporter shines a light on the murky world of the final cut with news that Darren Aronofsky's Noah has hit heavy seas at Paramount. The Russell Crowe-starring Biblical epic is deep into its lengthy post-production phase and the scuttlebutt is that early preview screenings have raised blood pressures on Melrose Avenue. The film has been screened in New York, Arizona and Orange County, California, to take its temperature with specifically Jewish and Christian audiences as well as the public at large. Their feedback, reports THR, has raised concerns that Aronofsky's singular interpretation of the Flood and its aftermath will struggle to find an evangelical fanbase within any of those groups. But Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore has been swift to reject suggestions that the studio is locked in a battle over final cut with its director, pointing out that a "normal preview process" will...
