Netflix’s Spanish Civil War zombie movie Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos) is an entertaining stumble through familiar undead territory, courtesy of co-directors Javier Ruiz Caldera and Alberto de Toro. As such, it won’t surprise anyone who’s seen a zombie movie before, but it pushes all the right buttons, thanks to genre-savvy direction, likeable performances and a snappy script.
Valley of the Dead begins in 1938, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, which has bitterly divided the losing Republican side and the Nazi-assisted Franco-led Nationalist side. In a chilling opening sequence, Nazi soldiers murder a wedding party and then spray the corpses with a blue gas, under the watchful eye of their Commandant (Francisco Reyes).

In Lorena Padilla’s “Martinez,” an aging office worker leads a solitary life centered on his own personal fulfillment, which generally leads to long sits in the park and becoming part of the landscape. Alone. Closed off from human contact.
“When I sent the script to Francisco Reyes, who plays Martinez, I only knew him over Skype. After he read it, the first thing he asked was, ‘who is this character, really?’ When I told him, it is my dad, he responded with ‘Ah, O.K., now I understand completely.’”
Padilla has made a career largely out of mining the intricacies of history and life in Mexico, even though she currently teaches screenwriting and directing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. One of her most recent scripts was for director Rodrigo Reyes’ “499,” a sort of mixed documentary that follows a conquistador who finds himself in modern Mexico listening...

"It's about love... and sex." The Cinema Guild has debuted an official trailer for a long lost spoof film titled The Wandering Soap Opera, making fun of classic Chilean telenovelas. This film was originally shot in 1990 by Chilean master filmmaker Raúl Ruiz, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 70. It was eventually completed by his wife and collaborator Valeria Sarmiento. Shot in gorgeous Super 16mm and featuring one zany performance after another from a cast having the time of their lives, The Wandering Soap Opera is a "glorious sendup of the telenovela, which, at the end of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, Ruiz called the very best lens through which to understand 'Chilean reality.'" It contains vignettes and "episodes", strung together into a full 80-minute film. Featuring Luis Alarcón, Patricia Rivadeneira, Francisco Reyes, Consuelo Castillo, Roberto Poblete, Liliana García, and Mauricio Pesutic. Have fun with this one. Here's the...
