Women in Film & TV (UK), the membership organisation for women working in creative media in the UK, announced its 2018 awards today (Dec 7), with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Rungano Nyoni and Juliet Stevenson among the winners.
Actress Stevenson received the Lifetime Achievement award, presented by her Truly, Madly, Deeply co-star Michael Maloney. Stevenson’s film work includes Emma, Bend It Like Beckham and Mona Lisa Smile.
Actress, writer and director Phoebe Waller-Bridge was awarded the writing award. Waller-Bridge is best known for creating and starring in sitcoms Crashing and Fleabag, as well as writing and producing BBC drama Killing Eve.

Netflix has announced a new batch of European original dramas at press event in Rome.
These include a six-part drama from Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes and an eight-part comedy created by and starring Idris Elba.
UK indie 42 (Watership Down) is producing Fellowes’ series The English Game, which Netflix VP of international originals Eric Barmack said was about “the invention of modern football and how its creation reached across the class divide”.

Netflix has ordered a comedy series starring Idris Elba called “Turn Up Charlie,” Variety has learned.
Co-created by Elba and TV producer Gary Reich, the series follows Charlie (Elba), a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who’s given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter. Netflix has ordered an eight-episode first season of the half-hour series. Production will begin this May in the U.K.
Elba and Reich will executive produce along with Tristram Shapeero. Shapeero will also direct the series with Matt Lipsey. Laura Neal, Femi Oyeniran, and Victoria Asare-Archer serve as writers with Georgia Lester also serving as writer as well as supervising producer. Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito are co-executive producers. Gill Isles will serve as producer. The series will be co-produced by Reich’s Brown Eyed Boy Productions and Elba’s Green Door Pictures.
