Major spoilers for "Cobra Kai" Season 5 follow.Nine months after its shocking Season 4 finale, Netflix's teen karate juggernaut, "Cobra Kai," returns with an epic 5th season. With John Kreese (Martin Kove) now imprisoned for assault and Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) opening Cobra Kai dojos throughout the Valley, Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) joins forces with Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and another of his former enemies Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) to defeat the toxic dojo once and for all.
There's been no official word if the dynamic series will continue, but co-creator Jon Hurwitz has teased a possible Season 6, and Macchio has confirmed that he's open to more ideas. Though Season 5 could serve as the story's overall conclusion, we will likely see more from the "Cobra Kai" extended universe in years to come. For now, there's no shortage of memorable moments in the newest season. Although it takes a few episodes to find its footing,...

In honor of the women’s U.S soccer team beating out the Netherlands in Sunday’s World Cup Final, watch these inspiring female athletes bring their star-power to the silver-screen. From “Bring it On” to “Bend it Like Beckham,” we have you covered with movies that run the athletic gamut.
“Bring it On”
Two rival cheerleading squads duke it out in a teen flick fraught with routine theft, betrayal, romantic drama, and of course high flying cheer stunts. The movie delivers on its title’s promise — the girls of Rancho Carne and East Compton High indeed “bring it on.” Watch the young Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union give starmaking performances in this cult classic.
“Bring it On Again”
The cheerleading sequel has graduated from high school drama to college campus drama. With an entirely new cast and plotline, the followup still maintains the cheer squad battles that made its predecessor so entertaining.

Unstoppable, ass-kicking heroines are still a minority in film and television, but we like to think that things are getting better. Women have been tearing it up in more and more in recent years in high profile Ya adaptations, superhero movies and gripping dramas from the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and Tatiana Maslany.
Here are some of the most awesome female leads from television and film, all waiting to be watched on Netflix right now:
Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)
Young adult adaptations have been all the rage in recent years, with a gratifying number of talented young women taking the lead roles. Out of all of these, Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss has got to be our favourite.
Panem is a terrible place to live, and, on top of that, Katniss is handed some extra helpings of personal tragedy. And while not entirely comfortable or willing...

Inspired by ... something I can't recall, I recently actually watched a movie I got from Netflix in a timely fashion. That movie was Drew Barrymore's girl power, feel good, Whip It; starring Ellen Page, whom I like a lot, despite myself. On the movie's IMDb page, I learned that the movie was based on a book. I usually prefer to read a book before I see the movie but in this case, decided to make an exception because the movie was so adorable.
Bliss Cavender is a smart, indie girl, suffering through high school, a pageant-obsessed mother and a terrible job at the Oink Shack in Bodeen, Texas. There's basically nothing awesome in her town: no good music, fun culture, or boy eye candy; as Bliss herself puts it, "You will see Jesus skateboarding the streets of Bodeen before a hot guy wanders across the county line." Plus! The year's most unlikely couples, and crunchiest action sequences
Hit Girl from Kick Ass
Putting the cuteness back into screen violence, Chloe Moretz's 11-year-old hellcat could have skewered The Expendables, The A-Team, The Losers, The Takers and all the other man-meat thrown at us this year into one unsavoury testosterone kebab before the school bus picked her up. Sweet, foul-mouthed and dangerously psychotic, she's the daughter Quentin Tarantino never had, the Christian right's worst nightmare since The Exorcist and the fancy dress costume parents really shouldn't contemplate.
Evelyn Salt
She might have the physique of a malnourished sparrow, but Angelina Jolie's ambiguous rogue agent somehow demolished all pretenders to pick up the Bourne baton. Her role was originally meant for Tom Cruise, but all it took was a nasty Chinese burn from Angelina and he handed it over. And you've got to say, she looked the part,...

James celebrates Whip It, with a journey across the worlds of Iron Man 2 and Kick-Ass for good measure...
"I am Iron Man!" Actually, no you're not. You're a billionaire war profiteer and disaster capitalist who is going to get his sorry spoiled arse handed to him by a vengeful Russian guy with electro-whip arms and a nickname stolen from a sex tape. Tony Stark: you suck.
I like Robert Downey, Jr. and I loved the first movie but building up to the freshly-released Iron Man sequel I can't help but hope that 'our hero' gets a good pasting. He's a self-absorbed playboy who only has superpowers thanks to high tech gadgetry. He only really gets by because of a privileged upbringing, the fact he inherited his daddy's business empire and a fortune earned from the massacre and mutilation of others. Way to hustle, Tony. What a hero.

Did Drew Barrymore's roller derby romp rock your world, or did it just make you want to put on your skates and leave?
The critics are largely thrilled by Drew Barrymore's gentle directing debut, an adaptation of Shauna Cross's breezy 2007 novel about a teenager trying to escape her life of small-town ennui by joining a local roller derby league. Whip It stars Juno's Ellen Page as Bliss Cavendar, aka Babe Ruthless, who discovers a talent for zipping round a rollerskating rink populated by badass women with monikers such as Eva Destruction, Bloody Holly and Jabba the Slut.
Bliss's ability to send opponents flying while staying on her own two skates helps transform a motley crew of likable losers, The Hurl Scouts, into championship contenders, and she's soon enjoying the sort of free-living, hard-partying lifestyle she always dreamed of, even striking up a fledgling relationship with a young wannabe rock star.

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut about a teenage girl from small-town Texas who gets hooked on high-speed roller derbies will please fans of Americana, writes Philip French
The bruising sport of high-speed, competitive rollerskating goes back to the 1920s and roller derbies have waxed and waned in popularity ever since. The last occasion I can recall a movie on the subject was in 1972 when Raquel Welch produced Kansas City Bomber, an exposé of the professional business in which she also starred as a roller derby champion torn between love (ruthless manager Kevin McCarthy, the brother of novelist Mary), family (admiring daughter Jodie Foster) and professional integrity.
Drew Barrymore wasn't even born then and Whip It is altogether less judgmental. A warm-hearted, teenage rite-of-passage flick, it stars the attractive Ellen Page (of Juno fame) as Bliss Cavendar, a bright, 17-year-old, high school kid from a Texas small town who comes across...

A film starring Ellen Page, directed by Drew Barrymore and all about roller derby. Three things that spell out kooky American indie flick. But don’t let put you off. Although not in any way groundbreaking – Whip It is great fun and hard to dislike. In a small Texas town Bliss Cevandar (Page) sees an escape from her life of waitressing, football and beauty pageants when she attends a roller derby league in nearby Austin. It turns out she has some skills on the quad skates and becomes Babe Ruthless, the best jammer in the league. The story could be any tale of high school teenage rebellion, except here characters are named Maggie Mayhem and Smashley Simpson! Yet it’s refreshing to see a movie with so many strong female characters. For parents this is a resoundingly better movie to take your daughter to than any number of Miley Cyrus flicks.

Ellen Page stars in a sweet-natured directorial debut by Drew Barrymore. By Xan Brooks
Drew Barrymore makes her directing debut with a join-the-dots sports outing that's so brightly played – and so essentially sweet-natured – that its manifest cliches come up smelling of fresh paint. Ellen Page is the teenage beauty queen who finds her true calling on the roller rinks of Austin, Texas. Born anew as "Babe Ruthless", she proceeds to usher a floundering Roller Derby team towards greatness, and woe betide any Smashley Simpson, Iron Maven or Eva Destruction daring to skate across her path. You can guess where it goes from here, but no matter. Barrymore takes enough detours along the way to make us care about her contestants and believe in the gaudy, clattering microverse they patrol. Away from the rink, the presence of Daniel Stern as Page's dad stirs up pleasant memories of Peter Yates's Breaking Away,...

Much was made of Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut. Barrymore, as a Hollywood veteran, however, used many of her connections to help with the success of Whip It (2009). One of those connections was the well-respected Costume Designer, Catherine Marie Thomas.
Known for her adept diversity, Thomas has been the designer on films as wide-ranging as Kill Bill (Vols. I & II) and The Prairie Home Companion. With Whip it, however, Thomas found herself in a position of freedom, as Roller Derby is traditionally known as having an “anything goes” approach to uniforms; from fishnets to feathers, nothing is off the table.
With team names like The Sirens, The Holy Rollers, and The Hurl Scouts, Thomas was able to work with themes for each team’s uniform. Additionally, because the actual sport of Roller Derby has no real guidelines regarding uniforms (i.e. skirt length, presence of “flair”), Thomas also had the...

As someone who closely follows Austin film news, it's impossible for me to talk about Whip It -- or to watch it -- without facing the issues of its setting and production. The rollerderby movie was written by a former Austinite, is set in Austin and a nearby small town, makes Austin practically a character ... and apart from a few days of shooting scenes of notable locations here, was shot in Michigan. Should we count it as an Austin film? Does it matter, especially for non-locals?
Regardless of where it was filmed, Whip It -- now available on DVD and Blu-Ray -- is a charming film, aimed at a teenage crowd but enjoyable by grownups as well. I don't need to tell you how refreshing it is to watch a movie written and directed by women, in which the girls and women are all fairly strong and well-rounded characters who...

When people get excited about something, they blossom and their affection can become contagious. Such is the case for screenwriter Shauna Cross, who stumbled across the world of roller derby and decided to get her story into print. She wrote it first as a young adult novel, Derby Girl and then managed to option it to Drew Barrymore’s production company. Barrymore loved the material so much she decided to turn it into her directorial debut.
Whip It [Blu-ray] opened last fall to generally positive reviews but middling box office, vanishing without much of a splash, which is a shame because the movie is pretty good and worth your attention. Out this week from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, the movie is available in the usual formats with the Blu-ray edition containing a digital copy disc.

Chicago – Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It” is the kind of fun, girl-power driven comedy that I honestly expected would find a huge word-of-mouth audience in theaters. Its absolutely dismal box office ($13 million) was one of the biggest financial surprises of 2009. People are likely to catch up with the Ellen Page comedy on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Whip It” is one of those films with a heart clearly in the right place and the kind of wildly enjoyable ensemble that makes storytelling flaws like predictability easier to overlook, especially in HD. “Whip It” is an easy to film to rip apart but it’s an ugly duckling comedy, an underdog that’s easy to root for and ignore critical analysis. Cynical movie goers should look away, but many, many people will find something to love in the story of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) and her unusual coming-of-age adventure on wheels.

Rollergirls get the Hollywood treatment as Drew Barrymore makes her debut as a director… but Jessica Holland is the real thing
When I went this month to an advance screening of Whip It – a teen movie about a small-town girl who joins a roller derby league in Austin, Texas – it wasn't just because I wanted to see how Drew Barrymore measured up as a first-time director, and because I like Ellen Page, who stars in Juno. It was mostly because I got hooked on roller derby three years ago in the same way Page's character does in the film, and I wanted to see how the sport is to be presented to the world.
"Chicks beating each other up on roller skates" is the shorthand often used for women's flat track derby, but to me and 50 of my London Rollergirls teammates and rivals who were at the screening, that's about...

Coming-of-age stories always retain a certain formula that usually consists of a teen full of angst breaking free from the shackles of expectations. Either placed on them by their parents or society as a whole, the subject usually discovers a passion which is usually not accepted by the film’s oppressors until the end, usually concluding in a tearful moment. The same is true for Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut with Whip It. Though the story, based on the novel Derby Girl by Shauna Cross who also adapted the story for screen, seems awfully generic on paper, it flies across the screen with warmth, genuine authenticity and crushing elbows to the face.
Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) isn’t like all the rest of ‘em. Growing up in the small town of Bodeen, Texas, 17-year-old Bliss is surrounded by grunting jocks and done-up pageant goers, something lost on the porcelain-faced girl.

In this week's Whip It, director-star Drew Barrymore shines a loving light on one of the most brutal and devilishly entertaining sports around: roller derby. If you've ever seen a derby match, you know what I'm talking about: 60 minutes of fast-skating, bruising action between players with names like Axles of Evil and Juana Beat'n. In celebration of the badass beauties of the roller derby world and their Whip It counterparts - including Ellen Page as "Babe Ruthless," Kristin Wiig as "Maggie Mayhem," Barrymore as "Smashley Simpson," and Zoe Bell as "Bloody Holly" - here's a Cinematical Seven remembering some of the scariest, fiercest movie characters to ever lace up a pair of roller skates.

Whip It
Directed by: Drew Barrymore
Cast: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern
Running Time: 1 hr 51 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: October 2, 2009
Plot: Bliss (Page) wants more out of her small town life than the beauty pageants her mother pushes her toward. Bliss jumps at her chance to join the roller derby team, but then must live a double life so her parents don’t find out.
Who’S It For? Ladies who are sick of men getting all the roles in sports movies. Anyone who believes Page could be one of the best young actors working today.
Expectations: I like everyone involved in this film and I can harken back to a time when I used to watch roller derby on the USA network (I think) when I was a wee lad. It’s a great topic for the flick, so I was pumped.

Stuck in a dead-end job in a no-pulse Texas town, 17-year-old Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) is miserable. Then, on a trip to Austin to buy clothes for the dreadful junior-miss pageants her mom (Marcia Gay Harden) keeps forcing her to enter, Bliss spots an ad for an upcoming all-girl roller-derby match — the Hurl Scouts versus the High Rollers. Sneaking away on the designated night, she catches the match, falls in love with the action, returns home to dig out her old pink Barbie skates, sneaks back to Austin, lies about her age, auditions for the Hurl Scouts and wins a place on the team. Soon her life, for the first time, begins to get interesting.

Photo: Fox Searchlight Picture Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is a success as Whip It takes "girl power" and turns it into a healthy dose of fun. There’s a real message inherit in Whip It that’s exclusive to any woman who’s had her mother try to mold her in her maternal image. While this might seem to make the film “girls only”, Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut does feature enough charm to appeal to the other gender as well. But alas, this is a true girl power movie, and Barrymore makes no qualms about championing that. For her first picture, Barrymore emulates the derby girls in her film: a couple of bumps and bruises but an overall entertaining effort.
One of the best compliments Barrymore can receive lies with her ability to tell a story. Granted, the script itself isn’t the most complicated story to adapt, yet Barrymore keeps things focused on the characters and their relationships. The plot itself might be exaggerated, but the people are believable, especially Marcia Gay Harden’s overbearing mother Brooke.

Actress says director Drew Barrymore had everyone on set calling her 'Small.'

In "Whip It," Ellen Page's character, Bliss Cavendar, rocks the roller-derby nickname of Babe Ruthless, but in real life the movie's star has her own idea of what punny name she'd like to compete with.
It skews more intellectual than her onscreen persona's choice: "I'd want to be Hurt Vonnegut, because I'm a massive Kurt Vonnegut fan," she told MTV News.
On the other hand, Page's friends and director/co-star Drew Barrymore have chosen different monikers for the petite Canada native. "Roommates I had in Brooklyn named me the Tiny Canadian," she said. "But the nickname Drew gave me was actually Small Newman. I'm pretty much called 'Small' by most people. I love it."
And the sport is about much more than witty nicknames...

Below is my fav shot from the Whip It trailer below. Ellen Page is all serious and ready to go. She's willing to sweat for her leading lady status. But it's Juliette Lewis who's hogging the attention, sticking her tongue out, coarsely flirting with the camera. The girl can't help it.
Juliette Lewis "Iron Maven" and Ellen Page "Babe Ruthless"
When I first saw the trailer, I got all tingly thinking about seeing the elusive 90s star again but resigned myself to what was sure to be a short raucuous and welcome cameo. The film has a ton of characters and surely Ellen Page (star) and Drew Barrymore (director/producer/co-star) would eat up the running time!
I am elated to report that I was wrong. Juliette has plenty of screen time as the tough chick star of the Texas derby, "Iron Maven". The actress even won considerable applause during...

What can you say about first opportunities to meet A-list celebrities? As much as you pretend to disregard the distance movie-stars have built between you (and the rest of America), these people still exude an unnatural glow that’s impossible to ignore.
Enter Drew Barrymore. She makes one thing perfectly clear before we sit down to discuss her latest film Whip it, also her directorial debut: She missed DVDs, and cannot believe VHS tapes are now declared novelty items. Barrymore insists she will never buy films through iTunes, and misses the days of yore, during which she could track down some, “rad VHS porn.”
Barrymore is a lively act to keep up with, but as four other writers gather around us to discuss her film, she makes it very apparent she will be treating us as equals (despite her slight financial advantage).
I found a great roller-derby name. “Midlife Crashes.

Hollywood has become the host of a unique Los Angeles premiere of "Whip It!". On Tuesday, September 29, black carpet was rolled out in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre to greet the oncoming celebrities, and it saw members of the L.A. Derby Dolls roller derby team skating down as well as performing stunts.
Black seemed to be the theme for the premiere as majority of the cast attending were seen in a dress or suit that is dominated with the dark color. Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, Eve, Zoe Bell and Landon Pigg were some of the cast members wearing black for the evening.
Coming also to the special screening event were their fellow cast mates, Alia Shawkat, Andrew Wilson and Daniel Stern, as well as executive producer Nancy Juvonen. Drew's boyfriend Justin Long, "Pineapple Express" actress Amber Heard, and "True Blood" actor Sam Trammell were also present.

Counting down to the theatrical release of "Whip It!", Fox unleashed profile featurettes for the roller derby comedy drama. One of the on-set videos centers the attention on Jimmy Fallon. Coming from Yahoo! Movies, it features the comedian talking about his "sleazy Mc" character Hot Tub Johnny, working with Drew Barrymore and what the movie has to offer.
In addition to this Fallon featurette, two other profile featurettes are also found. One from Yahoo! highlights on Ellen Page as she describes how her character, Bliss, finds herself when she joins a roller derby team. The other one from MySpace takes the focus on Alia Shawkat and how her character takes part in the movie.
An adaptation film based on Shauna Cross' novel "Derby Girl", this movie follows 17-year-old Bliss who has no clue where her life is going. She is groomed for local beauty pageants by ambitious and haughty mother.

Roller derby chick flicks aren't novel. I have fond memories from the '70s of catching endless TV replays of The Kansas City Bomber, with its vaguely kinky girl-on-girl aggression (it starred Raquel Welch, who wasn't quite an actress but knew how to get mad). So I was primed to see Whip It, the first movie directed by Drew Barrymore, with Ellen Page as a 17-year-old small-town Texas high school student (Page, with her elfin girlishness, will probably be playing 17-year-olds when she's 37), who lies about her age in order to join the Hurl Scouts, a roller derby team based in Austin. Barrymore is such a nice, sweet person that you may wonder how she could possibly have directed a movie about demon women on wheels whose primary athletic activity consists of bashing each other's bodies. Here's how. Whip It is a nice, sweet roller derby movie. There's no edge to it,...

Some may disagree, but I think there's something pretty cool about Toronto's mayor David Miller coming out to declare how proud he is of Atom Egoyan's new erotic thriller "Chloe." Of course, Miller was more likely taking pride in the depiction of his fair city than the film itself, which opens with Amanda Seyfried putting on a lacy black brassiere and never looks back. Egoyan has never shied away from the erotic -- it's the thrills part that has eluded his work for mainstream audiences, and when we meet Catherine (Julianne Moore) at the start of "Chloe," she, too, is dissatisfied.
As a locally prestigious gynecologist, Catherine is smart and sophisticated, but in a foretelling scene, she informs a patient that orgasms are "just a series of muscle contractions." When her husband (Liam Neeson) fails to return home for a surprise birthday party she has planned for him, Catherine...

More footage of the forthcoming "Whip It!" have been made available for viewing pleasure with the outing of five clips from the roller derby drama. Most of the snippets center their attention to Ellen Page's character Bliss Cavendar and her life leading to her discovery of the underworld roller derby league.
One of the clips captures the moment when Bliss' mother scolds the misfit girl after she embarrasses her mother at a beauty pageant. Another clip sees Bliss and her best friend Pash, played by Alia Shawkat, telling a lie to her parents that they will go to a football game rather than to a roller derby show.
"Whip It!" is an adaptation film based on Shauna Cross' novel "Derby Girl". The story centers on Bliss, a 17-year-old girl who is groomed for local beauty pageants by ambitious and haughty mother, and has no clue where her life is going.

After 30 years in the business and 10 years producing her own films, actress Drew Barrymore is making her directorial debut on Whip It, a coming of age story about a teen finding herself in the world of competitive roller derby. The script is written by Shauna Cross, a derby athlete herself, based on her own semi-autobiographical novel, Derby Girl.
The story is set in Bodeen, a small Texan town where they take their football and beauty pageants very seriously. Bliss Cavender (Ellen Page) is miserable, forced into the latter by a mother who vicariously revels in the fake world of make-up and enhanced gowns. That is, until Bliss emerges on stage with blue punk rock hair and answers she’d most “like to have dinner with Joe Strummer from The Clash.”

In her directorial debut, Drew Barrymore presents the upcoming comedy about a girl who shuns beauty pageants to join a roller derby. "Juno" star Ellen Page stars in "Whip It," out in theaters on October 2.
Page stars as Bliss Cavendar, a rebellious girl constantly being pressured to enter beauty contests by her disapproving mother. Instead of practicing to walk in heels, she dons roller skates instead and joins a roller derby league under the name Babe Ruthless.
Marcia Gay Harden plays the mother. Also in the supporting cast line-up are "Saturday Night Live" comic Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Juliette Lewis, Eve, and Daniel Stern. Barrymore appears as one of Babe's teammates.
Shauna Cross wrote the screenplay based on her novel "Derby Girl." Barrymore co-produces through her Flower Films shingle.

It's a slow news day and Fox Searchlight has sent us the poster for Whip It, the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore. Based on the book Derby Girl by Shauna Cross, the film stars Ellen Page as Bliss Cavendar, "an indie-rock loving misfit" who finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin Texas. Check out the poster after the jump. Bliss tries out as Babe Ruthless for a team named the Hurl Scouts, where she hopes to skate alongside the likes of Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig) and Smashley Simpson (Drew Barrymore). The movie also features Marcia Gay Harden as Bliss’ disapproving mother, Jimmy Fallon who is a cheesy hungover announcer named Hot Tub Johnny, Zoe Bell (skate name: Bloody Holly), Eve, and Juliette Lewis (skate name: Iron Maven) play for the Hurl Scout's rivals, the schoolgirl-themed Holy Rollers. After the first set of photos from "Whip It!" made its way out, Fox Searchlight presents another form of sneak peek at the roller derby comedy drama by premiering its brand new trailer. More than two minutes long, the promotional video introduces Ellen Page's Bliss Cavendar and follows her as she finds a way out of her small-town misery.
Groomed for local beauty pageants by ambitious and haughty mother, Bliss has no clue where her life is going. But, that's all is about to change. One day, she discovers an underworld roller derby league. Impressed by what she is seeing, the misfit 17-year-old girl then tries out to join a team named the Hurl Scouts under the name of Babe Ruthless and finds her true self along the way.

Last week we posted the first photos from Drew Barrymore's directorial debut Whip It. Today Fox Searchlight has released a movie trailer for the dramedy. Based on the book Derby Girl by Shauna Cross, the film stars Ellen Page as Bliss Cavendar, "an indie-rock loving misfit" who finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin Texas. The trailer feels like a mix of Adventureland, Juno and Bring It On, which to me is an interesting mashup. I'm a sucker for coming of age films, and its always great to see a story with a female lead which isn't a paint by numbers romantic comedy. And not to mention its good to hear Weezer being used in a trailer. Watch the trailer after the jump and leave your thoughts in the comments below! Bliss tries out as Babe Ruthless...
