The changing global strategies of streamers and their impact on the independent film sector were front and center for international industry reps at the Zurich Summit on Saturday.
Sasha Bühler, Netflix’s director of film for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Patrick Wachsberger, Black Bear president John Friedberg, John Lesher, Neon CEO Tom Quinn, Focus Features’ Kiska Higgs and CAA’s Roeg Sutherland were among the participants taking deep dives into major issues facing the global entertainment market.
Commenting on changing investment strategies at Netflix, Bühler stated, “We’re available in over 190 countries and we have 238 million subscribers, very diverse, around the world, and we actively produce in 50 countries, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, and there are territories that are more saturated than others.”
There are definite growth markets for Netflix and the company has not slowed down its investments at all, she added.

Responding to suggestions that streamers are pulling back in terms of investment, Netflix exec Sasha Bühler, who oversees German-speaking content, said this was not the case for her platform.
“We’re not slowing down by any means in any market. We’re just being a little bit more deliberate about what works for our members,” she said.
Bühler was joined on the panel by Picture Perfect Federation CEO Patrick Wachsberger; Axel Kuschevatzky, co-founder of London, Los Angeles and Buenos Aires-based production company Infinity Hill and Nick Shumaker, Head of Anonymous Content independent.

The Whale and The Good Nurse producer Scott Franklin put a positive spin on the ongoing above and below-the-line crew shortages impacting production on both sides of the Atlantic in a panel at the Zurich Summit on Saturday (September 24).
The long-time Darren Aronofsky collaborator, who works under the banner of the director’s Protozoa Pictures, said fresh opportunities lay behind the crew crunch.
“In the U.S. there is a two-fold conversation. First and foremost, how many years have we all been complaining how hard it is to get our shows set up, and now we have a problem that there’s too much demand for stuff,” he said. “The demand for content is good news. It’s a high-class problem.”

This year’s Zurich Summit kicked off with a bang as a host of top industry execs gathered on stage to discuss one of the most challenging topics facing the independent film world today – how to finance an independent film in the streaming age?
The panel inevitably was drawn to the pros and cons of going down the streaming route.
Former Lionsgate film chief Patrick Wachsberger, who recently was a producer on Oscar-winning hit Coda, spoke at length about the challenges he faced when financing the project. The Pathé title was a project he helped develop at Lionsgate and took with him when he left the US studio. The film had pre-sold to a number of international territories but famously caused a stir when Apple came in and acquired the film at Sundance for 25M in a worldwide deal, causing the streamer to make buyback deals with those rights holders.
