Studio Lionsgate agreed to license more than 100 films, including its hit “Hunger Games” franchise, to Valve’s Steam, an online gaming store where people can digitally downloaded games, the companies said Monday. It makes the studio one of the first to license movies there, as Lionsgate widens the platforms where it pushes its content. It follows Lionsgates moves in the last year to launch online subscription video services, like a Comic Con-branded service and a video-on-demand offering with Kevin Hart. Steam’s licensing deal includes some of Lionsgate’s biggest hits, including titles from the “Hunger Games,” “Twilight,” “Saw” and “Divergent.

Exclusive: Mark Roybal, the well-respected president of Steven Rales’ indie production shingle Indian Paintbrush, is leaving. He is being hired by 20th Century Fox production president Emma Watts to become Evp Production. He fills the slot that Peter Kang left when he exited the studio and subsequently signed on at Paramount. I’m told that Roybal will oversee Gone Girl and the Matt Reeves-directed sequel Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Gone Girl, an adaptation of the Gillian Flynn bestseller, is the odds-on favorite to be the next film that David Fincher directs. He leaves Rales’ Indian Paintbrush in a good place. The company has established itself as a respected financier and producer of classy fare, from the Drake Doremus-directed Like Crazy to the Wes Anderson-directed Moonrise Kingdom and his follow-up The Grand Budapest Hotel. Also coming is Jason Reitman’s next film, Labor Day. Roybal’s exit is amicable.

20th Century Fox has hired short film director and the head of Oddball Animation, Wes Bell, to develop a feature film adaptation of the dystopian novel The Maze Runner. The story sounds pretty awesome, and I can see it making a solidly entertaining movie.
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, and centers on a character named Thomas, "who after having his memory wiped is deposited in a community of boys trapped in an enormous maze. He soon learns they are part of a mysterious test, and finds it is his destiny to join the ‘maze runners’ and lead them to freedom." Peter Kang and Daria Cercek are overseeing at the studio. Noah Oppenheim wrote the first draft of the script.
Below you'll find the trailer for the short that Bell directed called Ruin, which the studio recently acquired as well. Ball will also be directing that feature film as well.

In late July we got word that Fox was acquiring Wes Ball's short film Ruin, and they must have been really pleased with the up-and-coming director because the studio has now tapped him to helm The Maze Runner, the first of a trilogy of dystopian novels by James Dashner.
According to Deadline, Gotham Group will be producing The Maze Runner with Peter Kang and Daria Cercek overseeing at the studio. Noah Oppenheim wrote the first draft of the script.

Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade.

Exclusive: In a whopping summer auction that reached seven figures, 20th Century Fox acquired Gone Girl, the Gillian Flynn novel that was just published by Crown and is atop The New York Times Bestseller List for the second week in a row. The book will be produced by Pacific Standard’s Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea, along with Leslie Dixon. Flynn will write the screenplay. Other studios including Universal were in on the action and I think the Fifty Shades Of Grey action has elevated interest in bestsellers geared to female readers. I’m such an avid fan of the Planet Of The Apes films – even the TV Show and Animated Series. To me it’s the greatest franchise in movie history. Having seen Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, the film is truly a welcomed addition to the series and one of the best films of 2011!
You can imagine how thrilled I was to receive an email with an invitation to speak with screenwriters of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. I had the great pleasure of talking to these two writers, producers (and married couple) and found to my giddy delight that we share a common love of animals and all things Apes!
The following is our conversation on the film, CGI apes, animal rights and spaceships.
Michelle: In many ways Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is like the 1972 Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Twentieth Century Fox have gotten their hands on a spec script called “The Last Witness” by Danish writer Stefan Jaworski, reports Variety. Described as a “ticking-clock thriller”, the film would center on the lone survivor of a bomb attack in Boston, thus making him the last living witness, I guess you could say. Producer John Davis and his Davis Entertainment brought the project over to Fox, where Peter Kang will oversee for the studio. Stefan Jaworski is quite a prolific writer in his native Denmark, with a string of TV shows to his credit, including the features “The Candidate” and “The Gold of Valhalla”. “The Last Witness” will be his first Hollywood movie according to IMDb.com.

Twentieth Century Fox is in final negotiations to acquire the speculative screenplay The Last Witness, from Danish screenwriter Stefan Jaworski as he is ready to make his English-language debut with this.
The script is about the sole survivor of a bombing in Boston, and since it’s classified as a ticking-clock thriller it is due to some sort of suspense thriller that contains a race against the clock with lots of violence, and an apparent antagonist. As no other story details were given, I’m speculating he’s charged with either finding the bomber or stop another attack in very short amount of time.
The thriller will be produced through Davis Entertainment, which first brought the project to the studio, with Fox’s own Peter Kang managing the project. Fox executive Kang also closed the deal last Friday and acquired screen rights to Matthew Quirk’s first novel” The Five Hundred.
