The choices for Emmy’s music branch this year are overwhelming, with hundreds of series now available via broadcast, cable and streaming options. Here are six of the most talked-about possibilities for nomination in the original score categories.
The Flight Attendant
“The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max) featured one of the season’s most creative scores, courtesy of composer Blake Neely. At his initial meeting with producers, Neely remarked that he saw the hard-partying title character Cassie as “a broken child,” and thought “child instruments” such as toy pianos might make an interesting musical choice.
As Neely recalls: “Then I upped the ante and said, ‘How about only percussion?’” They loved the idea. Every musical sound in the eight-part series is a percussion instrument, from timpani and marimba to piano and tubular bells, all played by Neely.
“You start looking at things in your house differently,” he says. “My dishwasher, could I play that?...

Academy Awards officials released a short list of contenders for Best Original Song on Monday. It was the first time ever that the composers branch has whittled a massive number of entries down to just 15 tunes and announced those names to the public. Top stars are among the songwriters eligible to win an Oscar, including Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar and more.
We’ve got the complete list of the songwriters and performers for each of the 15 candidates below. Keep in mind that only the writers would actually be nominated on January 22 for Academy Awards, but you might see some of the performers on stage for the ceremony. Also keep in mind that these are the songwriters listed by the studios on the campaign websites and Fyc materials. There have been times in the past where members of the music branch have ruled some writers ineligible if...

“Star Trek: Discovery” composer Jeff Russo grew up watching “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” so you can imagine his reaction when he got tapped to score CBS All Access’ new TV iteration of the franchise. “When the opportunity even arose, it was like, ‘Well, no way, they’re not gonna want me, they’re gonna want somebody else,’” Russo said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Music panel, moderated by this author (watch the exclusive interview above). “And then it happened and I pretty much lost my mind.”
Taking on such a beloved property was “terrifying,” Russo said. He had to serve two masters: being faithful to the sonic palette of “Star Trek” while creating something entirely new. For the theme, Russo, who won an Emmy last year for scoring “Fargo,” wanted it to have a more modern sound before adding the iconic Alexander Courage fanfare at the end.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1 Episode 15, “Will You Take My Hand?”]
“That never gets old…ever!”
Jeff Russo said that on a sound stage in Burbank last month, in between takes of a full orchestra playing Alexander Courage’s end credits theme from the original “Star Trek.” This slightly refined version, which Russo explains (and as fans with an ear for detail will recognize) is from “Tos” Season 2, brought back for “Star Trek: Discovery” just in time for a momentous first season finale. As the closing seconds show the USS Enterprise make its initial, grand appearance in the timeline of the CBS All Access show, the time was perfect to bring in a slice of TV history for the moments immediately after.
