Everyone loves a good slasher movie. You know, where there’s a serial killer on the loose in a small town, and it’s our job to figure out “whodunit” with each member of the cast being killed off slowly one by one? Or when a husband/father goes stir crazy in a possessed mansion and starts killing his family? Unfortunately Wolf Moon is not one of those films. It’s painful, and not in the good way.
From the very beginning, you feel like you’re watching a student project. Not gritty and disturbingly realistic like Blair Witch, but amateurish, with an incoherent plot, obvious editing, laughable dialogue, and unfortunate acting. The title card comes up showing us the definition of the word cursed: “to be afflicted with, suffer from the coming down of calamity on someone by a spirit, deity, demon or one of the dead esp. from a desire for revenge,...

Where would the horror genre be without its libidinal icons? Its scream queens and handsome hunks? Along with gore and jump scares, sex has fueled the horror genre for generations. Just as characters from the vampire and werewolf mythos can "glamour" others--i.e., put a spell on others--so is the glamorous essential to the cinematic spell cast by these denizens of the dark, and nothing spells glamour like sex appeal. Is it any wonder that young breakout actors frequently find their first feature opportunities in independent horror films?
In the first of a series of research interviews, I'll be taking a look at the hunks of horror, starting off with one of the leaders of the pack, so to speak: Chris Divecchio. Divecchio's recent turn as Dan, the werewolf drifter in Dana Mennie's Dark Moon Rising (aka Wolf Moon, 2009) skillfully interprets the sensual tension between strength and vulnerability key to such characters.

Last Thursday night, at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, Horroryearbook's Gary G. and Andrew were On The Scene at the film's premiere. Written and directed by Dana Mennie, Wolf Moon is the tale of a small southwestern town terrorized by a rash of werewolf murders. It stars an impressive cast of genre veteran's such as Maria Conchita Alonso, Chris Mulkey, Sid Haig, Lin Shaye, and Billy Drago; alongside up and comers Max Ryan, Ginny Weirick and Chris Divecchio. Horroryearbook was excited about possibly meeting some of our genre heroes, like Mulkey, Shaye and Haig in person.

One flick we've been talking about for a while now is Dana Mennie's werewolf driven love story Dark Moon Rising. Don't let the love story part fool ya, though; the movie features Sid Haig fighting werewolves! That premise alone is enough for me to get my ass into a seat to watch it.
Lionsgate announced today that it has acquired the movie and will be sending it home to DVD on June 22nd under the title Wolf Moon. As noted, this toothy little tale stars quite the genre pedigree with Sid Haig, Maria Conchita Alonso, Max Ryan, Chris Mulkey, Billy Drago, and more.
The story of Wolf Moon goes like this: "Real love and fate collide in a small town girl's life as Amy falls in love with a mysterious drifter who brings with him a family curse and the unimaginable horror that follows. Bender, who shares the curse with his son,...

Taking a leap into the American Film Market this year is Dana Mennie's Dark Moon Rising , a twist on the ol' "gal falls in love with a monster" tale. Just swap out a vampire boyfriend for a werewolf boyfriend and you've got this film. Oh, and Maria Conchita Alonso stars. You've also got genre vets Billy Drago, Sid Haig and Lin Shaye. Synopsis: Real love and fate collide in a small town girl's life as Amy falls in love with a mysterious drifter who brings with him a family curse and the unimaginable horror that follows. Bender, who shares the curse with his son, brings hell to Amy's small town. As Dan and Amy's love is put to the test, Thibodeaux, an ex-cop from another city who has witnessed Bender's lust for blood firsthand, Sam, the local sheriff and an ex...

Whew! Finally the elections are over, and no matter which side of the political fence you sit on, you can't deny that history has been made. The week of November 1-7, 2008, was full of highs and lows for me; while I was rejoicing at Obama's resounding success, I couldn't help but feel disheartened by the passage of Prop 8 in California and similar measures in other states. We've come so far; yet, there's still a lot of work to be done to ensure equal rights for all. But I know that's not what we're here to talk about. So let's rehash horror's wins and losses over the past seven days.
One upcoming flick that looks like a frontrunner is 100 Feet. Be sure to check out the new clip that showed up online. I don't know about you, but I get a real The Entity vibe off this thing. I can't wait to see if I'm right.

With the nation mired in an economic crisis rivaled only by the Great Depression, a seemingly endless and increasingly unpopular war -- both of which are taking a devastating toll on the pocketbooks, morale and the very psyche of nearly every American -- and a myriad of domestic troubles ranging from health care and the environment to energy and the erosion of personal freedom, interest in the in the upcoming presidential election, now only days away, is at a virtually unprecedented high.
Never before in the history of the United States has the fate of the nation and indeed the literal survival of the republic seemed to hang so precariously in the balance. For at least the last forty years and particularly in the case of the last two or three presidential races, the most commonly uttered phrase on the tongues of voters faced with hard choices and their sense...

Vegas, baby! Even the city's airport is a gaudy slice of neon depravity.
Everywhere you look are slot machines, even in the bathroom. I'm sorry, but I already have my hands around a one-armed bandit. Don't need sirens and bells going off while I'm peeing. Anyway, it was around one in the afternoon, and Debi and I had just gotten to Sin City for our set visit to the new creature feature Dark Moon Rising, starring Max Ryan, Maria Conchita Alonso, Chris Mulkey, and Billy Drago; genre royalty extraordinaire Sid Haig and Lin Shaye; and newcomers Ginny Weirick and Chris Divecchio. Out in the dark somewhere between Death Valley and Area 51, things were going bump in the night. Good thing for you, yours truly was there to investigate. Luckily the only real demons I’d have to face that night were of the windblown dust storm variety.
