Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Barring some unforeseen cataclysm, the feature is easily going to be this week’s b.o. superstar and likely one of the year’s biggest per screen debuts. How it will fare against other fall b.o. knock-outs like Searchlight’s Birdman or TWC’s The Imitation Game remains to be seen. A slew of Specialty openers will coincide with the Inherent Vice juggernaut. A24 will open Oscar-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s The Captive day and date after an early fall bow in the director’s native Canada. Sundance Selects will expose Free The Nipple in New York...

Brought up in the wild excesses of New York's Chelsea Hotel, Gaby Hoffmann has never conformed. Now, after a decade-long disappearance, she's back as an indie film goddess – and star of Girls. In an interview first published in the New York Times, she talks to Taffy Brodesser-Akner
According to family legend, there was a snowstorm on the night in 1982 when Gabrielle Mary Antonia Hoffmann – Gaby – was taken home from the hospital to her mother's apartment at the Chelsea Hotel. Of course Hoffmann did not yet know she had been born into downtown New York artistic royalty. Her mother Viva (née Janet Sue Hoffmann) appeared in Andy Warhol's movies and lived at the Chelsea with Gaby's 11-year-old half-sister Alexandra, her daughter with ex-husband Michel Auder – the French video artist who later married the photographer Cindy Sherman. (Hoffmann's actual father was the actor Anthony Herrera.)

We now know a little bit more about why Adam is the way he is on Girls: He's had to take care of an erratic and disturbed sister his whole life. Playing the part of said sibling is Gaby Hoffmann, who portrayed a similarly troubled hippie-type character in Crystal Fairy and is best known for childhood roles in Sleepless in Seattle, Field of Dreams, and Now and Then. She and Lena Dunham met as kids — Hoffmann's stepmom, artist Cindy Sherman, is friends with Dunham's mom, artist Laurie Simmons — and reconnected as adults about five years ago. "We had talked about the show before it even started and there wasn’t really a place for me," Hoffmann told Vulture earlier this month. Then last year, she got an e-mail from Dunham, who'd written Adam's sister, Caroline, with Hoffmann in mind. "I said, 'Of course I'll do it.' It was...

Oprah Winfrey's old stuff has fetched $600,000, said news reports Sunday morning. In what was described as "an epic yard sale" taking place on Saturday - and, in classic Oprah style, all for charity - 10 percent of the total take, $60,000, went for a set of six 18th-century Louis XVI armchairs with hand-embroidered details. The Los Angeles Times also noted that the Oprah touch sent prices on the most mundane items skyrocketing, simply because people wanted something that was Oprah's - including a teapot expected to go for $100. In the end, it had another zero attached to its price tag.

The theme of Saturday Night Live’s 39th season opener: “SNL is back… and starring a bunch of people you’ve never heard of!”
This meta focus made sense — as Tina Fey(‘s plastic surgeon) said in her monologue, this is a “rebuilding year” for NBC’s sketch series. But even though the show seemed determined to remind us about how much it had changed, the premiere was a fairly smooth ride from start to finish. Maybe that was due to a longer rehearsal period than usual; maybe it was the steadying presence of Fey herself, who always seems to...

Robyn Rosenberger thinks that children who are sick or struggling to recover from an injury need a little reminder of the hero they have inside them - so she's stitched thousands of capes for kids to wear. "If getting a cape can make a child feel like they are a tiny superhero," she says, "I'll keep sending them for the rest of my life." Rosenberger, 28, of Seattle launched Tiny Superheroes in January 2013, and along with her volunteers has sent over a thousand capes to ailing children across the world, including survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing and the Oklahoma tornadoes.
