To the Lighthouse: Aloupis Crafts Woefully Sluggish Tale of Truck Stop Tendencies
Serving up a generous helping of outsider character study with teenage romance tinged by a demure, rosy hued examination of prostitution is director Tony Aloupis’ debut, Safelight, a film collecting a surprisingly talented cast considering its rather tepid platitudes. A 1970s era slice of nostalgic beats, the truckstop set film is neither a notable throwback to the era it wishes to recall nor an engaging examination of disparate souls coming together across the aching chasms of abuse and cruelty they’ve suffered through.
Disabled teen Charles (Evan Peters) struggles to get through a rather humdrum existence. His mother abandoned him when he was a child, and he’s now stuck caring for his ailing father (Jason Beghe) while he works at a truckstop counter under the caring eye of Peg (Christine Lahti). He has a passion for photography,...

Timid boy meets abused prostitute, they fall in love, she reveals a heart of gold, and the two strike a relationship despite their vastly different lifestyles – stop me if you’ve heard this one before.
Actually, I’ll stop myself, because Safelight feels like every schmaltzy romantic drama you’ve ever seen. The whole “disillusioned young girl forced into a life of debauchery” angle isn’t exactly fresh, and filmmaker Tony Aloupis doesn’t do much in the way of relationship building to get your heart thumping with joy. Rather, you’ll find yourself just trying to muster the energy to stay awake long enough for Aloupis to work through his typical rom-dram roadmapping, while resisting the growing urge to scream “Pull This Car Over Right Now.”
Evan Peters trades his Quicksilver speed to play a crippled gas attendant named Charles, who finds himself stuck in a run-down town with no promise.

A new trailer for contemporary road trip drama, Safelight, has arrived online courtesy of Indiewire. Written and directed by Tony Aloupis, who made his directorial debut on the movie, it originally acquired attention under the name Truck Stop before it was recently retitled. Whatever its monicker, there’s no doubt the light is shining firmly on the film’s two rising stars, Evan Peters and Juno Temple.
In the 70s-set movie, the pair play a couple of friends, Charles and Vicki, who wend their way up the California coast in a bright red convertible. He’s on a mission to snap photos of every lighthouse on their route for a photography contest, and she’s a runaway without anywhere else to go. Their relationship is explored via the good old road trip framework that usually offers plenty of scope for introspection and heady life realizations.

Starring talented up-and-comers Evan Peters and Juno Temple, "Safelight" (formerly "Truck Stop") is a beautifully '70s-set road trip/coming of age tale, complete with a side of that first descent into love. It follows Charles and Vicki (Peters and Temple, respectively) as they make their way up the California coast in a cherry red convertible. Charles is on a quest to photograph every lighthouse in the state as a series he's putting together for a contest. He's a high school student with cerebral palsy and she's a mysterious and troubled runaway, so they have a certain sense of empathy for each other that makes their tentative relationship uncommon yet compelling. "Safelight" is the feature film debut of director/writer Tony Aloupis, who previously created the short film "Sugar." Rising actress Juno Temple has made quite a name for herself recently, playing layered, twisted roles in both William Friedkin's “Killer Joe” and Gregg Araki's much-underrated “Kaboom,” and it looks like she will continue the trend as she joins Tony Aloupis' feature directorial debut, “Truck Stop,” alongside Evan Peters of “American Horror Story” fame.
Deadline report that the film, which is set in the 1970s, follows the coming-of-age relationship between a high-schooler with cerebral palsy, played by Peters, and a disturbed runaway battling demons of her own (Temple). Aloupis, who last wrote the indie film “Sugar,” (not the Boden/Flick baseball drama, but an upcoming ensemble film about homeless teens) has an interesting premise on his hands, and definitely has the cast to pull it off. Peters was solid in the first season of the uneven-but-compelling “American Horror Story,” and Temple will be invading the public spotlight...

2012 is shaping up to be a watershed moment for British ingénue Juno Temple. The Dirty Girl star will not only appear in the much-buzzed about, celeb-stuffed biopic Lovelace, which centers on the tragic tale of America's first porn icon Linda Lovelace, but also the hotly anticipated finale to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy The Dark Knight Rises. Still, Temple is committed to the continue challenging herself by tackling roles in daring indie efforts. Deadline reports that Temple has signed on to star opposite Evan Peters (American Horror Story, Kick-Ass) in the 1970′s-set coming-of-age drama Truck Stop. Writer turned writer-director Tony Aloupis (Sugar) will make his directorial debut on the feature that centers on the friendship that evolves between a high schooler suffering from cerebral Palsy (Peters) and an edgy runaway with a troubled past (Temple). Soon to shoot in Los Angeles, the drama will give each of the young actors...

After scaring millions of viewers in the first season of American Horror Story, Evan Peters is returning to his spot on the big screen alongside Juno Temple for a coming-of-age drama. According to Deadline, the pair will be leading writer-director Tony Aloupis‘s feature debut, titled Truck Stop.
The ’70s-set drama “centers around an unlikely friendship between a high-schooler with cerebral palsy (Peters) and a troubled runaway with a dark past (Temple)”. The first-time director collaborated on Rotimi Rainwater‘s 2011 film, Sugar, of which he lent his writing talent to. The Hacienda Film Company’s Cory Neal and Andrew Mysko will produce alongside Aloupis Productions’ Joe Kreig.
To be honest, I’m not all that familiar with Temple‘s work — which is kind of sad on my part, mainly because she has been gaining celebrity status in the recent years with her work in The Three Musketeers, as well as the upcoming Linda Lovelace biopic,...

Once again, you've got to hand it to most of the Twilight stars. Taylor Lautner might be doing everything he can to become the next Tom Cruise (without the couch hopping, we hope), but the rest are filling their non-Twilight time with a whole range of indie projects -- and Jackson Rathbone's is surely the most challenging to date. Variety reports that he will star in an indie drama called Truckstop with Jennifer Lawrence.
Written by Tony Aloupis (with revisions by Steve Grabowsky and director Rotimi Rainwater), the indie focuses on a man with cerebral palsy who works at a truck stop while caring for his dying father.
