In a new op-ed in Time, The Sentry’s Co-Founders George Clooney and John Prendergast write of the current conflict in Sudan: “Most significant is the failure by the international community to appreciate how stacked the incentives are in favor of those using control of the state to violently loot and repress.”
Of the two men vying for control of the country—Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan—Clooney and Prendergast add that their factions are “certainly driving Sudan into an existential death spiral over the economic spoils of state control that has been years in the making.”
Recommendations for how to address the crisis are included: “Ultimately, for peace and democracy to have a chance, international efforts should focus on making it financially painful to benefit from human suffering through war, repression, and corruption. Unless that fundamental calculus favoring violent kleptocracy is altered significantly, the Sudanese conflict...

In a new opinion piece in Time Magazine last week, George Clooney, John Prendergast, and Justyna Gudzowska warn that a brutal campaign by the Kremlin-linked mercenary firm the Wagner Group to access gold and other assets from Africa could prove to be a “lifeline” for the Russian war effort in Ukraine.
In their op-ed, Clooney and Prendergast, Co-Founders of The Sentry, and Gudzowska, Director of Illicit Finance Policy at The Sentry, detail how the Wagner Group has deployed to hot spots around the world, including Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Mali, and Syria, offering a “security shield” for corrupt leaders in exchange for access to gold and other valuable resources.
The Sentry is a strategic partner of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which George and Amal Clooney co-founded.

For their new book released this week, “Congo Stories”, NY Times bestselling author John Prendergast, Congolese activist Fidel Bafilemba, and Ryan Gosling traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo to document by turns shocking, enthralling, inspiring stories of individual heroism.
Congo Stories: Battling Five Centuries of Exploitation and Greed
Through Bafilemba’s profiles of heroic Congolese activists, Gosling’s photographs of Congolese daily life, and Prendergast’s narratives of the extraordinary history of exploitation and evolving social movements that directly link Congo with the United States and Europe, “Congo Stories” provides windows into the history, the people, the challenges, the possibilities, and the movements that are impacting the course of Congo’s destiny. The book features a foreword by Soraya Aziz Souleymane, afterword by Chouchou Namegabe, postscript by Dave Eggers, and illustrations by Sam Ilus.

In a new op-ed in Foreign Affairs, The Sentry co-founders George Clooney and John Prendergast highlight the fatal flaw in peacemaking in Africa.
They warn that “without taking aggressive measures to go after the spoils that drive conflict in South Sudan and other African countries, it is difficult to imagine any future other than one of deepening repression, growing famine, and spiraling warfare.”
The Sentry is composed of best-in-class financial forensic investigators, policy analysts, and regional experts who follow the dirty money and build investigative cases focusing on the corrupt transnational networks most responsible for Africa’s deadliest conflicts. By creating a significant financial cost to these kleptocrats through network sanctions, anti-money laundering measures, prosecutions, and other tools, The Sentry aims to disrupt the profit incentives for mass atrocities and oppression, and creates new leverage in support of peace efforts and African frontline human rights defenders. Today George Clooney, through the Clooney Foundation for Justice, gave a $1 million gift to The Sentry to kick off its “Making War Criminals Pay” fundraising campaign.
With increased investigative capacity, The Sentry – an initiative of the Enough Project and Not On Our Watch – will dramatically increase its production of dossiers focused on war criminals and their financial networks. The Sentry’s dossiers are being turned over to banks and governments in order to lay the foundation for serious action by regulatory and law enforcement authorities around the world, aimed at prosecuting or seizing the assets of those who finance and benefit from genocide or other war crimes.
In addition to George Clooney’s generous grant, The Sentry is pleased to announce leadership gifts from: Don Cheadle, Carl Allen, Ruben Vardanyan, the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, and three major donors who wish to remain anonymous. Including the Clooney Foundation grant, these gifts total $3.45 million.

Clooney, along with fellow actor and activist Don Cheadle, rolled out an investigative report on South Sudan war-crime networks at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Monday. The report, titled "War Crimes Shouldn't Pay," details the rampant fleecing, exploitation and wholesale bloodbath that implicates South Sudan's president and former vice president, international banks, multinational oil and mineral companies and arms dealers in Africa. The findings are a result of the investigative efforts of The Sentry. Cofounded by Clooney...

The Enough Project announced the launch of The Sentry, a new investigative initiative that seeks to dismantle the networks of perpetrators, facilitators, and enablers who fund and profit from Africa’s deadliest conflicts. The Sentry’s arrival comes as President Obama prepares for an historic trip to Africa later this week. Co-founded by George Clooney and John Prendergast, building on lessons learned from their earlier Satellite Sentinel Project initiative, The Sentry uses open source data collection, field research, and state-of-the-art network analysis technology to track and analyze how conflict is financed, sustained, and monetized. The new website for The Sentry, www.TheSentry.org, also features a secure portal for the confidential and anonymous submission of tips, leaks, and information. John Prendergast, co-founder of TheSentry.org, said: “Conventional tools of diplomacy usually have not helped end conflicts because they don’t alter the calculations of those fueling war and committing atrocities.

Nairobi, Kenya — Actor George Clooney and a group of U.S. genocide scholars in the United States are warning that war crimes are taking place in an obscure conflict in Sudan's southern region.
Clooney has long worked to prevent conflict in Sudan and South Sudan, and he co-founded a group that uses satellite imagery to monitor acts of war there. That group, the Satellite Sentinel Project, said Thursday that 26 villages were intentionally set on fire last month by Sudanese forces.
"Razing a village is a war crime, and the torching of now at least 26 Nuban villages, plus the systematic destruction of crops and grasslands for cattle, is a crime against humanity, Clooney said. "What we're seeing here is a widespread campaign of village and crop burning. We've seen this in Darfur, and it's happening again in South Kordofan and Blue Nile," he said, referring to two states in southern Sudan...

#Freeclooney! Looks like George Clooney got his wish: The actor got arrested Friday (March 16) morning in an act of non-violent protest of Sudan's blocking humanitarian aid, reports The Washington Post.
It was all part of the actor's plan, though, as he an other activists like Rep. Jim Moran, Enough Project's John Prendergast and Martin Luther King III -- along with George's father, Nick Clooney -- stood outside the Sudan embassy in Washington, D.C. By standing on the private property, the group knew they'd be likely to be cuffed, arrested and charged -- and looks like that's exactly what happened, according to the Washington Post's tweet: "Update: George Clooney arrested, in handcuffs outside of Sudan embassy."
The Oscar winner made the trip to D.C. in hopes of effecting change in the region. His trip began March 14 and included a meeting with President Obama and testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Nairobi, Kenya — Actor and human rights activist George Clooney made a quiet visit to a volatile border region between Sudan and South Sudan last week ahead of testimony he's giving before a U.S. Senate committee on Wednesday.
Clooney made the dangerous crossing from South Sudan into Sudan's Nuba Mountains region, Jonathan Hutson, a spokesman for the anti-genocide group the Enough Project, said Tuesday. Clooney saw burned-out villages and met with residents forced to seek shelter in caves because of aerial attacks by Sudan's military.
Violence has flared along the Sudan-South Sudan border since South Sudan seceded last year, and some experts worry the conflict could grow. South Sudan shut down its oil industry this year after accusing Sudan of stealing its oil.

George Clooney’s Satellite Sentinel Project (Ssp) has revealed visual evidence of mass graves in South Kordofan, which corroborates new eyewitness reports, obtained by Ssp, of systematic killings and mass burials in this conflict-torn region of Sudan. The evidence found by Ssp is consistent with allegations that the Sudan Armed Forces (Saf) and northern militias have engaged in a campaign of killing civilians.
Based on Harvard Humanitarian Initiative’s analysis of DigitalGlobe satellite imagery and eyewitness reports, Ssp has identified a site in Kadugli consistent with three mass graves. Ssp’s new evidence corroborates four, independent eyewitness accounts that Saf, northern militias and other forces aligned with the Government of Sudan (GoS) are present inKadugli and are alleged to be methodically searching houses for civilians. The four eyewitnesses claim that the Saf and GoS-aligned forces are systematically killing those suspected of supporting the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (Splm) and others.

From the scenes he captured, Ryan created a video for the Enough Project’s “Raise Hope for Congo” campaign working to create a permanent solution to Congo’s war. He also wrote a op-ed with Enough Project’s co-founder John Prendergast, which has been posted at the Huffington Post website.
“We recently traveled together to Congo, where the deadliest war in the world is occurring,” they write. "It’s a war which most people know nothing about, despite the fact that we’re all directly connected to it. Armed groups are fighting over the lucrative minerals that power our cell phones and laptops, leaving a trail of human destruction that has no equal globally since World War II.

More than a hundred individuals have been murdered.
And 20,000 people are now refugees.
All in the oil-rich region of Abyei, along the still-contested border between North and South Sudan. Evidence of this violence has been released on SatSentinel, a privately funded, publically accessible satellite envisioned by George Clooney and executed through the Enough Project, DigitalGlobe, and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.
"Our images show that these villages were intentionally burned," John Prendergast of the Enough Project said. "There wasn't a lot of burned vegetative cover between huts. They went from house to house.

"We're the anti-genocide paparazzi," George Clooney told Time magazine of his Satellite Sentinel Project. While in Sudan with John Prendergast on a "fact-finding mission" last October, Clooney hatched the idea of starting the Satellite Sentinel Project, which is funded primarily by Not On Our Watch (founded by Clooney, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, David Pressman and Jerry Weintraub). Ssp is the first public effort to monitor and report on potential hotspots and threats to security along Sudan's North-South border. The intro to Ssp's website explains the conflict, and news from Ssp's latest report on the state of Sudan's border is below: "A new state is being born in Southern Sudan against a backdrop of decades of war between the South and North of Sudan. ...

Earlier today, LookToTheStars.org brought you a story about George Clooney's new initiative to bring peace to Sudan through www.satsentinel.org. He has released this personal message – with John Prendergast – on what he hopes to achieve.
“A new state is being born in Southern Sudan against a backdrop of decades of war between the South and North of Sudan. A peace deal in 2005 ended the latest round of open conflict, but the possibility of a return to war remains high as Southern Sudan prepares for independence.
“One of the biggest risks in this dangerous moment is that an incident on the highly armed border could lead to wider conflict. The government in Khartoum has armed militias in contested bordering regions, the government air force has bombed border areas, and both sides have massed military units and equipment along the hottest border spots.

Un and Harvard University also partners in Satellite Sentinel Project, which aims to 'stop a war before it starts'
Google has joined the Un, Harvard University and a pressure group founded by George Clooney to use satellites to scour Sudan for evidence of state-organised violence before next month's referendum that could see the country split in two.
Clooney said that he had launched the Satellite Sentinel Project to "stop a war before it starts" by warning the government in Khartoum that it would not be able to hide war crimes from the rest of the world, as it did for so long in Darfur, if there is violence in southern Sudan, which is likely to vote on 9 January to secede.
The project plans to reduce the waiting time for satellite images from more than a fortnight to less than 36 hours. The images will be scrutinised by the Un for evidence of mass movements of people,...

Using his celebrity to crusade for causes close to the heart, George Clooney arrived by amtrak train into Washington, D.C. for his meeting on Capitol Hill on Tuesday (October 12).
Sporting bandages on his fingers, the "Up In the Air" actor squeezed past a crowd of onlookers and press members as he spent time meeting with President Barack Obama on issues concerning Sudan.
Coming ahead of a critical election early next year in Africa's largest nation, George reportedly is seeking worldwide assistance in preventing another civil war - which he sees as a strong possibility due to the fact that the January 9th vote happens to be "an independence referendum on south Sudan that is likely to split the country in two," according to AP reports.

George Clooney arrived in Washington DC by train this afternoon and headed straight to the White House for a meeting with President Obama. He's raising awareness about the situation in Sudan after traveling to the area with NBC's Ann Curry last week, and he urged the president to make a commitment to help keep the upcoming election peaceful. George discussed his humanitarian efforts on The Today Show this morning and also talked about a funny experience he had during the trip, which involved being spit on by an elderly woman. He had a sense of humor about the "blessing" and kept a smile on his face as he made his way to the Capitol to make a difference with Enough Project founder John Prendergast.
