‘The Out-Laws’ Review: Adam Devine Tangles With Pierce Brosnan In Over-Stuffed Netflix Action Comedy
In 1979, Peter Falk and the late great Alan Arkin made the perfect odd couple in the classic action comedy The In-Laws. It even spawned a not-bad remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in 2003. The difference between those films, and a bit of an attempt to do something similar in the cleverly titled The Out-Laws, which starts streaming on Netflix today, is that those movies were genuinely funny –particularly the Arkin-Falk teaming. But this one, also a kind of Meet the Parents on steroids, relies far too heavily on nonstop and incessant action scenes to carry us through its 95-minute running time.
The fault here does not lie with its cast, which is pretty impressive overall. Basically this is a comedic vehicle for Adam Devine, who not only stars but also helped develop the Ben Zazove and Evan Turner script as well as producing with Happy Madison’s Adam Sandler and Allen Covert.

Written and directed by Chelsea Peretti, First Time Female Director lives in the self-deprecating world of meta storytelling. Debuting at the Tribeca Festival in the Spotlight Narrative section, Peretti put so much of herself into this narrative, it could work as a documentary. It’s also such a comically honest portrayal of what women must endure if they want to get ahead in any career, let alone the theater business. Having to constantly prove to yourself and others that you are capable is so exhausting, but can also be rewarding if you are set up for success. Many are often left to fend for themselves, and the film shows one way of how that can happen.
In addition to Peretti, First Time Female Director boast a hefty cast including Amy Poehler, Andy Richter, Benito Skinner, Blake Anderson, Megan Stalter, Megan Mullally, Jak Knight, and Xosha Roquemore, Kate Berlant and many more.

You can probably guess the premise of Chelsea Peretti’s occasionally amusing film First Time Female Director from its title. The comedy, written and directed by the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star, follows the misadventures of a local theater’s first woman director — how scandal thrusts her into the spotlight and a lack of institutional support tries to yank her out of it. In its roughly 29 seasons, productions at the fictional Regis Theater in Glendale have only ever been directed by men. Sam, an anxious playwright played by Peretti, is about to change that.
As with so many recent historical firsts, Sam’s appointment is propelled by a misbehaving man. When a shocking impropriety shakes the community theater, its artistic director Sheldon Clifford (Andy Richter) fires popular director Greggy Thompson (Tim Heidecker). Sam wasn’t Sheldon’s first, second or, if we’re being honest, even third choice, as evidenced by...

Adam Devine discovers he has a lot to learn about Nina Dobrev’s family life after he meets her parents, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, in the trailer for the Netflix action-comedy film The Out-Laws.
The feature from director Tyler Spindel (The Wrong Missy) centers on bank manager Owen (Devine), who finally meets the parents of his fiancée, Parker (Dobrev), and then comes to suspect that they may have robbed his bank during the week of the wedding. Michael Rooker, Poorna Jagannathan, Julie Hagerty, Richard Kind, Lil Rel Howery and Blake Anderson round out the cast for the movie that launches July 7.
“I think your parents robbed my bank,” Devine tells Dobrev. “They knew the voice-activation code to get in the vault, which I’m pretty sure I told your mom about when I was wasted.”
The footage later shows Brosnan and Barkin teaching Devine how to use...

Netflix’s The Out-Laws trailer features a bank robbery, car chase, an awkward meeting of potential in-laws, and a reference to James Bond #5. Plus, the trailer includes a very handsome Pierce Brosnan, a description that – according to Richard Kind – isn’t a compliment.
The action comedy comes from director Tyler Spindel and stars Brosnan (Mamma Mia!), Kind (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of). Ellen Barkin (Animal Kingdom), Julie Hagerty (Marriage Story), Lil Rey Howery (Rel), Blake Anderson (Woke), Lauren Lapkus (Orange is the New Black), and Laci Mosley (A Black Lady Sketch Show) also star.

Meeting your partner’s parents can be challenging. Regardless of your confidence in your relationship, a wrong move with the parental units can spell disaster for your future. For Adam Devine‘s Owen Browning, he never banked on his fiancee’s parents being accomplished bank robbers. This hurdle is a tricky jump for Owen, a by-the-books bank manager, and all-around goofball. In Netflix‘s The Out-Laws trailer, Owen and his fiancee Parker (Nina Dobrev) discover Parker’s parents are the notorious Ghost Bandits, and they need the couple’s help to get them out of a jam.
Tyler Spindel directs from a script by Evan Turner and Ben Zazove (Sherlock Gnomes). The official synopsis says, “Owen Browning (Adam Devine) is a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker (Nina Dobrev). For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.
In addition to those selections, Tribeca will feature the North American and New York premieres, respectively, of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, and Randall Park’s Shortcomings, which debuted at Sundance. And the festival will close with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, the directorial debut of Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.

Bummer news, "Workaholics" fans — Paramount+ has canned the upcoming movie just a few weeks ahead of production. Star Adam DeVine announced the news via his Instagram, where he revealed that the movie is not a part of the streamer's "global strategy," which is both bad news for fans of the series and fans of streaming movies in general. Some of the risks taken by streaming services during the early pandemic just don't seem as smart now, and unfortunately, that means that many of these streaming services are totally rethinking their approach. While I'm not entirely sure what a "Workaholics" movie would entail, it would be guaranteed to be an unhinged, ridiculous bout of comedy that would give fans one last goodbye to Ders (Anders Holm), Blake (Blake Anderson), and Adam (DeVine).
