The Yeti attack at Covent Garden in recently recovered Doctor Who episode, The Web Of Fear, is a masterwork. Here's why...
The Web Of Fear was commissioned after a positive response to The Abominable Snowmen by then Story Editor (soon-to-be Producer) Peter Bryant, with the intention that it would close out Doctor Who’s fifth season. Rewrites for Fury From The Deep resulted in it becoming the penultimate story (one of many variables that resulted in Nicholas Courtney playing the role of Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart). Previously available as an audio soundtrack narrated by Fraser Hines, the film of The Web Of Fear was returned to the BBC archives in 2013.
I first experienced The Web Of Fear as a Target Novelisation at some point in the Nineties (I can’t remember if it was in Uddingston Library – so many Targets, so many Asterix books – or my primary school’s...

There’s a point during the DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premiere (airing Thursday, Jan. 21 at 8/7c) where you may wish the sizzle reel from The CW’s May Upfronts had simply served as the set-up.

Doctor Who stuntman Derek Ware has died, aged 77.
Ware worked on the show from the very first episode and on several stories throughout the 1960s and '70s.
As part of his work on Doctor Who, he formed stunt team Havoc, providing the riders, fallers, drivers and horsemen who fought during Jon Pertwee's first years as the Doctor (via TobyHadoke.com).
Ware stopped working for the programme in 1971, and went on to appear on TV shows including EastEnders, Z-Cars and Grange Hill in both stunt and acting roles.
His film credits included The Italian Job, on which he was responsible for its iconic Mini chase, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

From the Queen Vic to the Tardis. As Eastenders prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, we look back at its encounters with Doctor Who...
Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.
And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.
Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

From the Macra to The Mysterious Planet, Andrew finds the gold in oft-unloved Doctor Who episodes from across the decades...
For the show's fiftieth anniversary, Doctor Who Magazine ran a new poll ranking the 241 stories up to and including The Time Of The Doctor. The Twin Dilemma came last again, having done so in 2009 survey, and though it does have many faults, it isn't completely bad. Colin Baker blazes his way haughtily through it, and the story noticeably lacks energy when he's off screen. Perhaps it might have been marginally better just to have had the Sixth Doctor and Peri go to a Little Chef so he could complain about the service.
In the lower half of the poll (compiled by people rating all the stories out of ten) are some pretty good stories, or at least ones that arguably don't deserve to be there. We've therefore compiled a list...

I caught up with Doctor Who DVD documentary maker and BAFTA nominated director Chris Chapman to chat about his animated reconstruction of The Ice Warriors, which is now available on DVD (details here) and his career so far in the world of Who documentaries.
How did you get involved in the animation of the missing episodes of The Ice Warriors?
I've been a Doctor Who fan since I was a kid. And first I became a producer of documentaries and so I thought, 'Well, why aren't I making Doctor Who documentaries?' I got in touch with Dan Hall at the classic Doctor Who range and said, 'Please let me do Doctor Who documentaries,' and he said yes. And then I made Doctor Who documentaries,...

Andrew looks at some likely (and unlikely) theories to answer the question running through Doctor Who 7b: who is Clara Oswald?
This article contains spoilers for the current series, and finale, of Doctor Who.
Maybe, by making us ask this question, Steven Moffat is giving us a subtle clue: Clara is Who, ie. The Doctor and/or Valeyard. Probably not though. Let's be more scientific about this*.
We first saw someone looking very like Clara through the medium of an insane Dalek, formerly Oswin Oswald, with leet haxor skillz and a position of Junior Entertainment Manager on a starliner in the future. Then, in the past, we saw Clara Oswin Oswald – governess and barmaid – whose date of birth is the 23rd of November. In Clara's 101 Places to See book she misses out the number 23. What Does It All Mean?
Sorry, I just spat on you there.

Review Andrew Blair 8 May 2013 - 06:29
A classic Doctor Who story gets another re-release. But is this newly-minted Inferno DVD a worthy purchase? Andrew takes a look...
The main reason for buying this re-release of Pertwee-era serial Inferno is its improved picture quality. It's instantly noticeable when compared with the 2006 release, and makes the film and video transitions less jarring. It is so sharp that it could be mistaken for the Third Doctor's dress sense, although he gets somewhat rumpled in this one.
Inferno, for a seven-parter, largely manages to avoid feeling padded. Season seven had its production schedule imposed on it by the outgoing Troughton-era team; the new regime of Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks were concerned that the two seven-parters scheduled might drag on a bit, and came up with sub-plots that could keep the momentum going and re-energise the narrative. In Inferno's case, this resulted in a...

Review Andrew Blair 24 Mar 2013 - 14:00
Andrew takes a look at the third of Puffin's Doctor Who eshort stories, this time from Marcus Sedgwick, taking us up to Jon Pertwee's era...
Another Doctor Who ebook, and with probably the best characterisation of the sort-of-titular hero yet, The Spear of Destiny comes complete with Unit-dating jokes and Action by Havoc. Unlike the previous two entries in the series, it feels like an adventure from its televisual era, with many nostalgic nods and references.
The Spear of Destiny concerns Norse mythology, mined to varying effect in Terminus, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and The Curse of Fenric. As with much of the Letts/Dicks era of Doctor Who, a rational scientific explanation is sought for the magical or fantastic – in this case the pantheon of Viking gods, incorporating the spear that pierced Jesus' side for good measure.

We’re nearing the end of the dog days of summer, which means it’s time for summer finales, fall TV on the horizon, the political conventions getting underway, and (soon) a coveted Labor Day off. This week has True Blood wrapping up in all its gore, Alanis putting out a new jam, and Doctor Who kicking off its seventh BBC America season (but actually its 50th year on TV – wow). Have a great week!
Sunday
True Blood season 5 finale, 9 p.m., HBO
True Blood’s fifth season has been gory, creepy, and intense – with more sups, more death, and loads of flashbacks.

The actor and stuntman Alan Chuntz has died at the age of 81. Chuntz appeared in at least 15 stories from the classic series. He was a member of Havoc, the team that provided much of the stunt work for the programme. He played Omega's champion in The Three Doctors and had a rare speaking role as the Chauffeur in The Seeds of Doom.
As well as his work on Doctor Who, Chuntz was a regular face on British Television in the seventies appearing in series such as Z Cars, Some Mothers Do Ave Em, The Avengers, The Persuaders, The Onedin Line, Hazel and Minder.
