Logan director James Mangold is going family friendly for his upcoming movie of Crenshaw...
James Mangold is heading in a very different directorial direction. The Logan director just signed on to direct Fox's live-action adaptation of Katherine Applegate's children's book Crenshaw, a story about a young boy whose imaginary friend-cat named Crenshaw comes back to help when the boy's family falls on hard times. (Maybe Crenshaw has adamantium claws?)
According to THR, Crenshaw will be produced by Kickstart Productions and Frederick Seton has already written the first draft of the screenplay.
While this might seem like a bit of a departure for the director of Logan and The Wolverine, Mangold actually has a pretty eclectic filmography. Other films on his resume include Walk the Line, Kate & Leopold, and Girl, Interrupted. Coincidentally Girl, Interrupted star Angelina Jolie is set to voice-star in The One And Only Ivan,...

Larry Charles, most well known for being Sacha Baron Cohen’s directorial compadre (the duo worked together on Borat, Bruno and The Dictator), will be at the helm of Pierre Pierre, a raunchy comedy following the actions and strange interventions of a French nihilist who’s transporting a stolen painting from Paris to London.
The script comes from first-timers Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton, originally picked up four years ago by Fox Atomic for the hefty sum of a million dollars. Rumoured once to have been a Jim Carrey project, after spending some time on the shelf, the film appears to be back on its legs with the attachment of Russell Brand as its new star.

Pierre Pierre‘s struggled to get off the ground for years now, making it all the more fitting that secured financing would get followed by Jim Carrey taking off right under our noses. You know that old saying about an inconvenient sequence of steps? Exactly.
But in comes Russell Brand to save the day. (It’s not often you say that.) Variety tells us the actor and comedian is hoping to take the lead for director Larry Charles (The Dictator, Borat) on Pierre Pierre, which has been waiting for a star to sign before venturing into those deeper, more complicated territories of pre-production.
For months, we’ve known the high-profile script from Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton‘s centers on “a self-indulgent French nihilist (Brand) who steals the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in the hope of selling it so he can finally move out of his parents house”; in their update,...

So, here we are, nearly four years after it was first announced, and still not much happening with "Pierre Pierre." Okay, something is happening, but the movie is still moving along at an unhurried pace, and it's now swapping stars. The long attached Jim Carrey -- who last we heard was gearing up to shoot this thing this summer -- has dropped out, and in his stead former Mr. Katy Perry aka Russell Brand has stepped in. To recap, the script by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton made the Black List in 2007, and Jason Reitman was first attached to direct, before Larry Charles ("Borat," "Bruno") signed on in 2010. Since not much has happened, thankfully the basic concept has stayed the same through all this development. The film follows a nihilistic, constantly-smoking, foul-mouthed Frenchman who is hired to transport the Mona Lisa after a theft from Paris to London, a gig...

While doing so, he crosses paths with a serial killer hilariously called Pigeonshit, a French inspector and his mother who owns a brothel. Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton script the project which was picked up in 2008 by Fox Atomic for $1 million, and initially had funnyman Jim Carrey attached for the lead, prior to the project hitting turnaround. Larry Charles doesn't direct a lot of movies, but when he does his star of choice is quite obvious. Though he has had a long career in television, working as a writer on shows like Seinfeld, Mad About You and The Arsenio Hall Show, since he made his way onto the big screen he has directed four features and three of them have starred Sacha Baron Cohen (the exception being 2003's Masked and Anonymous, which, strangely enough, starred Bob Dylan). From 2006 to 2012 Charles directed Cohen in character-based comedies Borat, Bruno and The Dictator, but for his next project he's found a new star. Russell Brand made a return to cinemas this year, though his profile was a little lower than previous efforts, with a small role in the Rock Of Ages ensemble. Now the comedian has entered early talks to take on the lead role in Larry Charles’ Pierre Pierre. If the name sounds familiar, that might be because the project has been through at least one variation before, with Jason Reitman considered it as a directing job that would’ve seen him working with Jim Carrey. He nabbed the script, written by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton in 2008, and briefly seemed likelyto bring the politically incorrect tale of a French nihilist who transports a stolen painting from Paris to London to screens.Of course, that didn’t work out, but Charles became attached in 2010 and has been pushing it through the development muck since then. It sounds like something Brand could do,...

Said to be moving forward earlier this year with Jim Carrey in the lead, the comedy Pierre Pierre is now eyeing Russel Brand as a leading man instead. The film focuses on a self-indulgent Frenchman who plans on stealing the Mona Lisa to get enough money to move out of his parent's house. Originally, the script, written by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton, was purchased by 20th Century Fox for a million as a vehicle for director Jason Reitman. Borat and Bruno director Larry Charles is now attached to direct instead. This Is All Verbatim From Screen 2/12/12 Focus On Cathy And Her Adventures
:Exclusive: Larry Charles’s $30m comedy starring Jim Carrey set to shoot this summer across Europe, Foresight’s hot Berlin continues
Larry Charles-Jim Carrey comedy Pierre Pierre has been given a new lease of life by Mark Damon’s Foresight Unlimited, Mandalay Vision and Lago Films, with Foresight boarding international sales pre-market and already closing deals in Russia (West), Benelux (Dfw), Scandinavia (Mis. Label), Eastern Europe (Revolutionary Releasing), Hong Kong (Deltamac), Middle East (Shooting Stars), Thailand (M Pictures), Latin America (Imagem and Gussi), Portugal (Lusomundo), Israel (United Kingdom) and Iceland (Myndform).
UK and other deal-makers are swarming. Berlin-based producer Marco Mehlitz of Lago Film (A Dangerous Method) recently came on board and closed a deal for German rights with Warner Bros. The pan-European shoot is set for summer 2012, with most of the production taking place in Germany.
Pierre Pierre centres on a self-indulgent French nihilist (Carrey) who steals the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in the hope of selling it so he can finally move out of his parents house.
Producers are Jason Blumenthal and Todd Black of Escape Artists, Matthew Rhodes and Cathy Schulman of Mandalay Vision and Mehlitz of Lago. Rhodes is in town touting the comedy. Steve Tisch and David Bloomfield of Escape Artists and Damon are executive producers.
The oft-reincarnated comedy from writers Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton was once budgeted at $20m, but now stands at $30m due to the strong supporting cast who are now in talks. “The supporting characters are real-sink-your-teeth-into roles for both European and Us actors,” Rhodes told Screen. Mandalay was brought the film by Escape Artists last summer.
Fox, who initially acquired the spec script for $1 million but moved off soon after director Jason Reitman dropped out, are still said to be “excited” by the project and could come on board Us rights later down the line.
Foresight also handles market buzzers 2 Guns and Rule #1.

If you don’t hear anything about a project for more than 18 months — no matter the size or prestige — something’s probably not going to plan. Such was the case with Pierre Pierre, a comedy that Jim Carrey has been trying to get into motion for years to no avail. Our last update, as indicated came in mid-July of 2010, when Borat Larry Charles (Borat) was brought on to helm Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton‘s Black List script, which revolves around “a self-indulgent French nihilist (Carrey) who steals the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in the hope of selling it so he can finally move out of his parents house.” Since then, it’s been nothing but quiet.
Until now, with ScreenDaily reporting that Charles, Carrey, Foresight Unlimited, Mandalay Vision, and Lago Films powering the thing back to life, as the latter three groups have signed on to produce the picture at a $30 million budget.

What I like most about the annual Black List is that there isn't any favoritism according to the projected financial size of a screenplay. For fun, you could scan down any list since its inception and you'll find equal parts indie/Sundace/small budget and studio/multiplex/limitless budgets. If you look at the price tag for 2007's top screenplay (Recount) and say picks #14 and #15 which have a budget that range somewhere between 50 to 100 times more. Here are updates on picks 15 to 11 of 2007. 15. Edwin A. Salt (Votes: 11) Writer: Kurt Wimmer Status: Released July 23, 2010. An already established writer, I'm sure Kurt Wimmer was somewhat surprised that he'd have to re-tailor his original screenplay to switch the gender of the lead role. Columbia Pictures coined the new version Salt, and had Phillip Noyce direct Angelina Jolie, who took on the newly named character of Evelyn Salt. Released July 23rd this year, the...

Larry Charles, the director behind Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno" and "Borat," is teaming up with Jim Carrey for a similar type of comedy called "Pierre Pierre." The plan is to make it for just over $20 million. In the new movie, Carrey will play a Frenchman who transports a stolen painting from Paris to London, behaving more obnoxiously than any waiter you've ever encountered at Cannes. Two years ago, the script for the movie by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton was sold for $1 million and made the Black List. Jim Carrey has yet to make a comedy return this past decade like his ’90′s era of reign. I enjoyed Yes Man, but it was far from Dumb and Dumber or Ace Ventura. I can’t see Larry Charles doing a Borat-esque docu-style, but I’d welcome a solid comedic director teaming up with Carrey even though the premise doesn’t seem like much.

Hot screenwriters Edward Cannistraci and Frederick Seton, the writers behind Fox's Jim Carrey feature "Pierre Pierre," have set up the male-comedy script "Gnarly" at Comedy Central.
Meanwhile, Ed Burns will write, direct and star in "Bayside Boys," a kind of East Coast "Entourage" about a group of twentysomething male friends from the middle-class neighborhood of Bayside, Queens, that's being peddled to top cable nets.

Disney has picked up "Mongoose", an action comedy from writers Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton. Tapestry's Peter Abrams, Robert L. Levy and Andrew Panay are producing.
Brian Sher, who developed the idea with the writers and brought the project to Tapestry, also will produce.
The logline for the pitch is being kept under wraps, though it has been described as having franchise potential and being in the tone of the "Beverly Hill Cop" and "Austin Powers" films.
Cannistraci and Seton are best known for "Pierre Pierre", a comedy spec that sold in the seven figures and attracted Jason Reitman and Jim Carrey. It is in development at Fox Atomic. The script was praised for its voice and comedic set pieces.
Tapestry is finishing up "Old Dogs" for Disney, a comedy directed by Walt Becker and starring John Travolta and Robin Williams.
Kristin Burr is overseeing "Mongoose" for the studio.
Cannistraci and Seton are repped by Category 5 and Jeff Frankel.
