“Doctor Who” star Peter Capaldi and Raindance founder Elliot Grove have been honored at the first ever British Short Film Awards.
Capaldi was given the Icon Award while Grove was handed the Impact Award
The British Short Film Awards, in partnership with the HearArt Project, were hosted by presenter Alex Zane on Friday evening. The event streamed on YouTube due to pandemic restrictions.
The jury, who deliberated across 35 categories, were made up of Aimee Lou Wood (“Sex Education”), Samuel Adewumni (“The Last Tree”), Tom Rhys Harries (“White Lines”) and Elizabeth Lail (“You”) as well as Oscar-winning patron Rachel Shenton (“The Silent Child”).

As the opening credits consume the screen, goosebumps of excitement emerge for fans of the sci-fi genre. We are immediately thrown into a dystopian world beautifully created by director, and first-time writer, Ravi Ajit Chopra. From bio-tech chips in necks, soldiers in strict formation and sophisticated spaceships, the intricate details and care given to this aesthetic are apparent from the short film’s first frame.
We land on Planet Vega and launch into a charming father/son relationship, which seems somewhat too idyllic in this setting. On some level, deep in the pit of your stomach, you know something is going to ruin this heartwarming moment. As they battle the elements, young Abner is taken by ‘Storm trooper’ like rangers and whisked away to a brutal world of regimented training (Ender’s Game springs to mind). The Talash Video Centre and Digital Boulevard have released the official trailer for a peculiar new sci-fi project titled Cognition, the first film made by filmmaker Ravi Ajit Chopra. Cognition is a 27 minute short dystopian sci-fi drama / thriller about a son confronting his past trauma. Journeying through the symbolic landscape of the subconscious mind, the story follows an unbreakable bond between father and son.... A bond that transcends space and time. This uncompromising short fuses two distant worlds in a hallucinogenic roller-coaster ride through the darkest chasms of the mind. Starring Andrew Scott, Jeremy Irvine, Lucy Russell, Wolf Kahler, Milo Panni, and Georgia Sandle.
