I think it’s high time we declared a moratorium on films that are purposefully made to look as shitty and rough as possible.
It worked first time around with Rodriguez/Tarantino’s Grindhouse and a few imitators that followed did it well like Hobo with a Shotgun which had the grime without going overboard. As all things must though, the trickle-down effect of a fad in the genre has led to more pale-looking imitators making their way to the bottom shelf of your local Blockbuster. The latest is I Didn’t Come Here To Die, which quite frankly looks awful with no real thought or effort put into how or why. The film looks like that VHS tape that was handed round and copied infinitely in year 10 at school. The content of that tape is something I’ll let you decide on but yeah, it looks bad.

Volunteer work. Some people do it simply out of the goodness of their hearts; some do it to boost their resume; and some people do it because they are forced to. Whatever the reason, volunteering is supposed to provide one with a meaningful and positive experience. In the indie horror, I Didn’t Come Here to Die, six young humanitarians discover that some volunteer projects require you to get your hands a lot dirtier than they imagined and they may even get you killed.
I Didn’t Come Here to Die, written and directed by Bradley Scott Sullivan, follows a group of individuals posted out in the woods to build a campground. While the group reveals their reasons for volunteering and let their personalities shine through, the project takes an unexpected turn and people begin losing their lives. What first appears to be a vengeful spirit in the woods soon...

As Halloween draws to a close for one more year, we here at Dread Central have two more seasonal short films to share with you: Eric England's The Trick or Treater and Erin Stegeman's Meet the Tweeds, both of which are co-produced by Ace Marrero along with each respective director.
Ace co-stars in The Trick or Treater with Katie Stegeman (he also appears in England's Madison County, which just premiered at the recently concluded Screamfest La film festival). Bradley Scott Sullivan edited and did the short's titles and sound work.
The Trick or Treater features Marrero as a man who gets tricked when he doesn't deliver his treats.
Ace explained to us that the original plan was to produce three shorts for Halloween to help celebrate one of his favorite times of the year, but Screamfest demanded so much attention they could only make the two.

Director: Bradley Scott Sullivan Writer(s): Bradley Scott Sullivan Starring: Indiana Adams, Kurt Cole, Madi Goff, Travis Scott Newman, Niko Red Star, Emmy Robbin Six young adults have volunteered (as Volunteers of American Generating Goodwill) to build a new campsite for under-privileged youth on 100 acres of recently donated land. A quick role call, there is: Vagg team leader Sophia (Emmy Robin), Miranda (Madi Goff), Julie (Indiana Adams), Chris (Niko Red Star), Steve (Jeremy Scott Vandermause) and Danny (Kurt Cole). Of course they are way outside of cell phone reception (something it seems most modern horror films and thrillers must work into their plot nowadays) and a significant distance from any other human contact. This is virgin territory, so they must camp in tents with only the bare necessities. Most importantly, there are hard-fast rules (such no alcohol and no sex) for everyone’s safety; but once the rules begin...

Take a classic slasher setup, a bunch of young people isolated in the woods, and turn the trope on its overly predictable ear and you get the indie horror film I Didn't Come Here to Die by Austinite Bradley Scott Sullivan.
With one of the best ever taglines ("Volunteer work is a killer"), Sullivan's screenplay takes a small group of "Volunteers of American Generating Goodwill" out to a remote location to start work on what will eventually be campgrounds for underprivileged urban youth. As the first team to work on the project, they're roughing it in tents, with no phone service, and supposedly, no alcohol and no fraternization. All the rules in place are for safety's sake, but once rules start being broken, everything and everyone starts down a slippery, bloody slope.

It all started at the Steamboat for the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau sponsored Opening Night Reception...which turned out to be a fun event to just be a wallflower and people-watch while knocking back a few free Dos Equis. Even the band was pretty good; they had a Modern Lovers/Television thing going on. An older white-maned British gentleman let me know that he would have preferred if Perry Como was on stage (a statement I had a difficult time disputing, because in reality what wouldn’t be made better with some Perry Como action? So, I nodded in agreement). Several Dos Equis later and I was well on my way to the Convention Center for a Dark Matters screening of I Didn’t Come Here To Die by Bradley Scott Sullivan. I’ll be posting my review of I Didn’t Come Here To Die soon, so I’ll...

Oh, how I need sleep, already, even though I only did a partial day for Aff Day One 2010. Of course, I started it right by going to the Opening Night Party at Speakeasy. I finally got to meet James Faust of the Dallas International Film Festival, pictured above on the right with Houston filmmaker Kelly Sears and her friend Gabriel (I apologize, I didn't get his last name). Kelly is in town to show her short Voice on the Line, and James is a panelist/moderator this year, but I can't find where on the website. But I know he introduced one of the Ed Burns films tonight. I think he's doing another "working the festival circuit" type panel like he did last year with Chris Holland, which was very informative.
I had to leave the party early to see Bradley Scott Sullivan's I Didn't Come Here to Die,...

Okay, so the week is off to a shaky start. The studios are up to their usual antics trying to find the next property to remake while making ludicrous casting choices and a movie called The Karate Kid is tops at the box office despite the fact that Jackie Chan teaches the younger Smith Kung Fu instead of Karate. Leave it to the indie filmmakers to inject a much needed dosage of sanity into the mix.

After a rash of annoying news, here's something that finally gives me a better outlook on the world before hitting the hay. From newbie filmmaker Bradley Scott Sullivan comes I Didn't Come Here To Die, a new low-budget indie horror that looks mother effin' A+ awesome. Shot on the Panasonic Lumix GH1 Dslr in and around Austin, TX, the feature is the story of a team of young volunteers working on a humanitarian project in the woods. Horrific accidents, rash decisions, and the unpredictability of human nature leads them all to the same disturbing conclusion. Volunteer work can be killer. Check out the trailer and one sheet below and then tell me you don't want to drop everything and watch it right now.

With a title like I Didn't Come Here To Die, you pretty much know exactly what you're going to get: a group of young people dying in (hopefully) entertaining fashion. And that's precisely what director Bradley Scott Sullivan aims to deliver with his debut feature. Shot entirely on the Panasonic Lumix GH1 Dslr camera in the Austin area the trailer impresses on a few fronts. First, there's the Christian Bale lookalike in the cast - it was shockingly easy to convince the lady friend that this was an early entry in Bale's filmography - then the overall style evident in the cinematography and some very, very fun prosthetic effects. The budget shows through in spots but the talent behind shows through more. Very nice. Check the trailer below.
