Becky G took the Oscars stage to perform “The Fire Inside” from the Eva Longoria-directed film Flamin’ Hot.
Diane Warren wrote the song for the film about Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor who became an executive after inventing Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Ahead of the ceremony at the Dolby Theater, Longoria talked about the excitement her directorial debut getting some recognition at the Academy Awards.
“I have goosebumps. I can’t believe it. I can because Diane Warren wrote the song, so she’s a genius and Becky G is a genius,” Longoria told Laverne Cox on Live from E! red carpet coverage. “Their performance tonight… You will never be more proud to be a Latino and a Chicano, but Becky’s thought and love that she put into this performance tonight is going to blow everybody away. She has some special guest from Inglewood.”
She continued, “We don’t ever get this platform.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Flamin’ Hot, the script from Lewis Colick and Gentefied creator Linda Yvette Chávez that became Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut.
The rags-to-riches story of Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor (played by Jesse Garcia) who becomes the marketing godfather of the spicy-chip revolution, hit the spot right away with audiences. The pic from Searchlight Pictures won the Headliners section’s audience award after its world premiere at SXSW, after which it became the first film to debut simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+ when it premiered in June.
Longoria told Deadline earlier this year that after sparking to the original script by Colick (October Sky and Charlie St. Cloud) and coming aboard, her first suggestion was that the story’s point of view needed to be Montañez’s.
“This is his version of what happened,” she said.

Update: President Joe Biden said that Flamin’ Hot was “the first-ever public screening of a film focused on the Hispanic community at the White House,” just before the Disney+/Hulu project was shown before a crowd of several hundred on the South Lawn.
Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and director Eva Longoria walked out together to make brief remarks to the crowd, who were spread out on blankets and munching on chips and, of course, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. The movie is the story of Frito Lay janitor Richard Montañez, who claimed to have invented the snack, although the origin story is in dispute. Montañez rose in the ranks at Frito Lay to become a marketing executive and “played a key role in accelerating the growth of our Flamin’ Hot Brand and other brands particularly through his Hispanic marketing efforts,” according to the company.

Eva Longoria jokes that she’s taking an extended vacation to get some rest after her whirlwind promotion of “Flamin’ Hot,” her feature film directorial debut. “I am going to sleep for about three months,” Longoria told me Thursday morning. “When I come up for air, I hopefully will know what I’m doing next.”
Joking aside, she said, “I will tell you it’s been very difficult. I’ve been sent many scripts already. I’ve been reading so much, but there’s nothing so far that has sparked in me the intense passion that I had for telling this particular story.
“I was asking my agent, ‘Do I have to feel this way about every story I want to direct? Because I haven’t felt it yet,'” Longoria continued. “He said that should be the bar.”

Searchlight’s Flamin’ Hot trailer delves into the true story behind the popular (but messy) Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Jesse Garcia (Quinceañera) stars as Richard Montañez, the janitor at a Frito-Lay factory who helped turn the industry around by cooking up a spicy version of the cheesy snack food.
“My journey is the journey of billions of people,” said the real Richard Montañez. “Being Mexican, being born in a labor camp, I’ve been fighting my whole life. I don’t know what it’s like not to fight.”
Director Eva Longoria calls Montañez the godfather of Hispanic marketing.
“That was his gift: seeing that nobody was paying attention to the Hispanic consumer. His gift wasn’t making a recipe in a chemical lab. His genius and talent and where he broke through was saying, ‘You guys, there’s a huge segment of the population in the United States that nobody is paying attention to,...

The first trailer for Eva Longoria’s directorial debut, Flamin’ Hot, has dropped and reveals Jesse Garcia playing Richard Montañez, a go-getting Mexican American who in real life claims he went from working as a janitor at Frito-Lay to inventing the successful Flamin’ Hot Cheetos snack product.
“Spicy? See, that’s how I got here,” Montañez says at one point as the Searchlight Pictures teaser recalls his youthful past in gangs and committing petty crimes, before Longoria’s rags-to-riches story has him inventing the salty Cheetos snack for Frito-Lay.
The trailer, which Garcia narrates, shows the breakthrough moment when he discovers that adding chili seasoning to Cheetos will bring a delicious heat to the snack product and potentially woo a far wider U.S. market. “I got an idea. It’s a spicy chip. It’s gonna change everything,” Montañez tells his skeptical floor manager, played by Matt Walsh.

Two's a coincidence, but three films about the origins of real-life brands releasing in the span of a few months? That's a trend.
On the heels of "Tetris" and "Air" comes "Flamin' Hot," the latest entry in the growing sub-genre that /Film's Rafael Motamayor has referred to as "the brand movie or product biopic (the prodpic?)." This time, the focus is on Richard Montañez, who rose from being a humble janitor at a Frito-Lay factory to a successful businessman and the self-proclaimed creator of Flamin' Hot Cheetos. The film is based on Montañez's memoir, "A Boy, a Burrito and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive," and was directed by former "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria, drawing from Lewis Colick and Linda Yvette's script.

Searchlight Pictures has set Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut Flamin’ Hot for a simultaneous release on Hulu and Disney+ on June 9.
The first-ever dual platform release by Disney follows the film having a world premiere at SXSW. Flamin’ Hot will debut on Disney+ internationally.
Disney-owned Searchlight has seen other movie titles like Fire Island, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and Not Okay go straight to Hulu as a sister brand to the family-friendly Disney+ as it became a home for more adult fare from Disney brands. And Longoria’s rags-to-riches film had been expected to go straight to Hulu heading into SXSW.
The release of Flamin’ Hot on both Hulu and Disney+ could also serve as something of an experiment for the company, which has in recent months been adding more general entertainment fare to Disney+ (as opposed to Hulu, where most of that programming has tended to...

Exclusive: Following the movie’s world premiere at SXSW, Searchlight Pictures’ Eva Longoria feature directorial debut, Flamin’ Hot, will stream on both Hulu and Disney+ on June 9. It’s the first time that a new movie has been made available on both of the Disney-owned Ott services stateside. The pic will stream on Disney+ overseas.
The pic is based on the true story of Richard Montañez (Jesse Garcia) who as a Frito-Lay janitor disrupted the food industry by channeling his Mexican-American heritage to turn Flamin’ Hot Cheetos from a snack into an iconic global pop culture phenomenon.
“I’m so excited for the world to see Flamin’ Hot on these two streaming platforms making this universal, inspirational story accessible to an even wider audience,” said director Eva Longoria. “Now everyone can celebrate the joy, power and heart of this film that also happens to uplift Latinos both in front of and behind the camera.

Listen, I love a delicious salty snack as much as the next guy. And if you promise not to tell my cardiologist, I’ll even admit to having scarfed down my share of Cheetos. But a feature film about the guy who claims to have invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos? That seems a bit of a stretch. I mean, when I was eating them, I never once thought that the experience would be enhanced by learning the backstory. What’s next, an epic drama about the creator of Twizzlers?
Well, I’m here to eat my hat, or at least some more Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, because Flamin’ Hot, receiving its world premiere at SXSW before streaming in June on Hulu, turns out to be an utterly delightful rags-to-riches story that should appeal to anyone in need of uplifting. There can be no doubt why Searchlight Pictures was excited to bring Flamin’ Hot, the true life story of the man known as the “godfather of Hispanic marketing,” to the screen. Premiering today at SXSW, the life story of Richard Montanez — a high school dropout from a struggling Latino family who worked as a janitor in a Southern California Frito-Lay factory for 10 years — is, at its heart, really a Rocky-style inspirational tale perfect for the Hollywood treatment. He eventually realized the American Dream and rose to one the highest ranks of the company,
In choosing Eva Longoria to make her directorial debut, they also have a budding filmmaker determined to make it authentic for the people it is about, not least in insisting and getting a largely Latino group of New Mexican actors, extras and artisans to bring it to life. South by Southwest is back for another year of the rootin’-est, tootin’-est, most queso-heavy film festival on the planet, as it invades Austin, Texas, alongside the music component of the festival.
The entire experience is now called the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals and takes place in Austin from March 10-18. If you’ve never been, it is an absolute blast, like Sundance but with better weather, better food and nicer people (though without the skiing and snowboarding). And this year’s line-up is no different, featuring splashy Hollywood premieres, hotly tipped indies and a ton of stuff you’ve never, ever heard of.
The entire thing kicks off with a bang – the premiere of Paramount’s hotly anticipated “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” directed and co-written by the “Game Night” team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Every few years, David Ayer reminds us that Michael Bay isn’t the only director blowing stuff up for no reason. Bright, Sabotage and Street Kings are examples of what Bayhem would look like if it were rated R and his latest film, The Tax Collector, is no exception.
The Tax Collector begins in a very expected way for this sort of thing. After breakfast with his wife and kids, David (Bobby Soto) teams up with his partner in crime, Creeper (Shia Labeouf). Their job is to collect payments from dozens of street gangs for a protection racket run by Wizard, who’s seen with his back toward the camera in a prison cell. Before you can wonder just who the heck this guy is, bodies start piling up in Los Angeles, where the head of the Mexican Cartel, Conejo (Jose Conejo Martin), is savagely, furiously and ceaselessly taking over Wizard’s business.

I’m not certain I’ve ever seen a movie fall apart so much, so quickly, and so late as The Tax Collector. What begins as an intense, well-crafted, gangster picture -- almost a twisted buddy movie really -- eventually devolves into a poorly constructed revenge film.
The first half, at least, is chock-full of intriguing little details, and workday nuances that could’ve only been culled from real-life experience on the mean streets of East Los Angeles. David (Bobby Soto) is a mid-level collector for his imprisoned ringleader father (Jimmy Smits) and connected uncle (George Lopez). He’s a monied, family man in a wealthy enclave, running the day-to-day errands for their neck of the woods, which mostly involve collecting gang taxes from the neighborhood shops and shopkeepers. His enforcer Creeper, a well-dressed white man and friend he clearly grew up with, is played by a riveting Shia Labeouf.

In the world of masculine cinema, there may be no more divisive and inconsistent an auteur than David Ayer. Indeed, even writing the words “auteur” and “David Ayer” in the same sentence may make some cinephiles’ brains explode like a cranium punctured by a high-caliber, high-velocity bullet. By the standards of any basic definition, though, this status has been clearly established. Between his dedication to dissecting and exploring the codes of a certain kind of male bonding––usually one forged in and shaped by landscapes of horrific violence where normal societal boundaries are replaced by deeply niche, personal codes of honor––and his reverence of the concept of families, both blood-bound and otherwise, Ayer has created an oeuvre of stories that could never be mistaken as the work of someone else.

Fresh product continued to rule in a distressed exhibition marketplace as Rlje Films’ Tax Collector grossed an estimated $317K at 129 theaters. Tax Collector is the third new title after Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour and IFC’s The Rental to top the box office since the pandemic began in mid-March.
We’ll know for certain which film is No. 1 tomorrow, but it’s looking like Tax Collector can claim that bounty. Disney had 20th Century Studios’ Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back on the charts at 260 sites, and its Friday-Saturday haul of $174K indicates it’s headed for a No. 2 ranking in the low $200K range. Episode V‘s estimated lifetime cume is $292.1M.
The David Ayer directed action thriller follows a “tax collector” who works for a local crime lord and finds his family’s safety compromised when the rival of his boss shows up in L.

The Tax Collector star Bobby Soto is grateful for every second he spent with Shia Labeouf and filmmaker David Ayer on the set of their latest crime drama. While it’s quite common for actors and directors to lose touch after working together, that is definitely not the case with the Tax Collector triumvirate. Whether it’s working out with Ayer at a local dojo or teaching a theater class with Labeouf at their Slauson Rec Theater School in Los Angeles, Soto cherishes the bond that they continue to have since filming wrapped in August 2018.
