Vanessa Kirby received an Emmy nomination for her performance as Princess Margaret in The Crown, and an Oscar nomination for her gut-wrenching turn in Pieces of a Woman. Now she’s back on Netflix in a visceral new thriller. In Night Always Comes, based on the novel by Willy Vlautin, Kirby will play a woman on a mission to save her family’s home before time runs out. Directed by Benjamin Caron (Sharper) from a script by Sarah Conradt, Night Always Comes is part of a multi-year, first-look deal with Kirby’s production company Aluna Entertainment. In partnership with Lauren Dark, the actor and producer seeks to bring complex women’s stories to the screen.

The Crown and Pieces Of A Woman star Vanessa Kirby has joined the jury of the fourth edition of Wscripted’s Cannes Screenplay List presented in collaboration with global streaming platform Mubi.
The initiative, launched in 2021, supports screenplays by women and non-binary writers and writer-directors. The list is pitched to producers during the Cannes Film Market to expand deal opportunities for the nominated talents.
“It is a pleasure to join Wscripted on this brilliant initiative. There is still such a clear disparity between the number of male and female led projects, and I am so pleased to unite with Wscripted to support and elevate the next generation of formidable female talent that I know are going to shape the cinema of the future,” said Kirby.
Alongside her acting career, Kirby co-founded production company Aluna Entertainment in 2021, alongside former Film4 exec Lauren Dark, with the mission of championing female creatives and stories.

Netflix and the U.K.’s National Youth Theatre have launch an awareness program after a survey revealed alarming concerns about nepotism in the creative industries.
A National Youth Theatre survey of 3,000 young people across the U.K. found that the “nepo-baby” effect extended beyond on screen talent to behind the scenes roles too. Some 79% of young people believed they need connections rather than talent and determination to make it and a further two-thirds (68%) thought they needed to live in a big city to have a career in TV or film.
To alleviate these concerns, Ignite Your Creativity, a free program from Netflix and the National Youth Theatre, aims to help young people build networks and raise awareness about the wide range of behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theatre. The program will support 500 young people aged 14-25 years in South Wales, West Yorkshire and the Northeast of the country.

Mubi Go, which has helped buoy NYC’s arthouse market by offering members a free movie ticket a week at participating theaters, expands to LA today where the biz could really use a boost. The films are curated and the first is Apple’s Cha Cha Real Smooth.
Mubi, a global streaming service, production company and film distributor, launched Mubi Go in New York last fall and will continue expanding to major markets through 2022 with Chicago next. “We’re being very careful and methodical about the rollout,” said distribution chief Chris Wells.
Mubi members get Mubi Go as a perk. The company doesn’t release subscriber numbers but Wells said its NYC base jumped by 30 after it added Mubi Go.

Kirill Serebrennikov, the director of Cannes competition title “Tchaikovsky’s Wife” and the only Russian director with a film in this year’s official festival, on Thursday called for world governments to lift sanctions on a Russian oligarch and film financier who has been reported to be helping the Ukraine war effort.
The oligarch is Roman Abramovich, who is behind the film fund Kinoprime that helped to finance both “Tchaikovsky’s Wife” and Serebrennikov’s prior film “Petrov’s Flu,” among other Russian art-house films. Serebrennikov, who said he did not receive money from the state to make “Tchaikovsky’s Wife,” defended Abramovich’s work as saying that the films he funds are not propaganda movies but are “rather the contrary.”

Neon has taken the North American distribution rights to Mark Jenkin’s horror feature Enys Men, starring Mary Woodvine and Edward Rowe. The deal was hatched before Cannes, ahead of the pic’s world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section.
Jenkin wore several hats on the production beyond director and writer, including cinematographer, sound designer, and composer.
Set in 1973 on an uninhabited island off the British coast, a wildlife volunteer descends into a terrifying metaphysical and ecosophical journey that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare.
Enys Men was shot on 16mm color negative using a 1970’s clockwork Bolex camera and post sync sound. This was to achieve the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a desolate, haunted movie palace.
The movie is produced by Denzil Monk for Bosena. Johnny Fewings serves as EP. Film4 co-financed the film, with Ben Coren...

Neon has purchased North American distribution rights to Mark Jenkin’s “Enys Men,” ahead of the horror film’s premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, which sounds very shades of “The Wicker Man,” stars Mary Woodvine and Edward Rowe. Jenkin wore a lot of hats on this one. The buddy comedy is one of cinema’s most popular genres, but also one of its most well-worn. As a result, filmmakers are constantly trying to find new angles for stories about two friends. One of the more unique riffs on the genre in recent years is “Brian and Charles,” Jim Archer’s crowd-pleasing mockumentary that premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and released its first trailer today.
“Brian and Charles” tells the story of a Welsh inventor who builds his own friend, a robot named Charles who happens to have a taste for cabbage. While the film contains plenty of charming robot comedy, audiences have loved its ability to address real themes of loneliness, isolation, and depression. The movie is adapted from a 2017 short film of the same name, which earned Archer the top prize at the Cannes Young Director Awards. The feature-length version received strong reviews at Sundance...

It has already been doing so with the likes of Charlie Brooker on the TV side.
The streamer last year picked up Kirby-starrer Pieces of a Woman, and is home to The Crown, in which Kirby played Princess Margaret.

Exclusive: Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer have been cast in Invasion, a sci-fi thriller pic from BAFTA-winning UK filmmaker Michael Pearce (Beast).
I can also reveal that Amazon Studios has taken worldwide rights to the project and will produce alongside American Animals outfit Raw and UK funder Film4, which backed development.
The script is written by Pearce with Joe Barton (The Ritual). It follows two young brothers who go on the run with their father, a decorated Marine, who is trying to protect them from an unhuman threat. As the journey takes them in increasingly dangerous and unexpected directions, the boys will need to confront hard truths and leave their childhood behind. Ahmed is playing the Marine while Spencer is a probation officer who helps to bring him home. The film is aiming to shoot in the States this year.
