You know you’re a TV nerd when your most anticipated awards announcements are the Writers Guild Awards. TV is a writer’s medium. Every TV fan awaits the Emmys, and some even bother to care about the Golden Globes, but most don’t know the major Guilds give out statues to television producers.
Nerdier still, I’m most interested in the nominees almost nobody writes about: web original short form comedies and dramas.
So while you probably could not imagine my disappointment when the WGA released their nominees for original short-form new media this year,...

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

In last week's 30 Rock season premiere, Liz "Cranky Sue" Lemon was, all of a sudden, happy! Fans saw her skipping with animated birds and smooching on a mystery man (James Marsden). It was about time. Sitcoms about cranks have two options: cling relentlessly to the joke or allow characters to grow. Michael Cyril Creighton, creator and star of the critically acclaimed web series Jack in a Box - who also had a hilarious turn on 30 Rock - opted for the latter. “I tried to make him a little happier this past season, which some people weren’t jazzed about. But I needed to do it as a challenge to myself, because it’s really hard to write that character happy...I thought it was time," Creighton said in an interview. "We’ll see how long that happiness lasts," he added. Unlike his character Jack, Creighton has had a lot of reasons to be happy.

The Writers Guild of America East and West announced in October 2010 that for the first time in its then 62 years of honoring excellence in film, television, and radio, its WGA Awards would also recognizing outstanding writing in new media. The writers of Anyone But Me and 30 Rock’s Frank vs. Lutz online series were the honored recipients of two new awards added to the WGA’s 63rd annual ceremony. Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward took home a trophy evocative of a dorsal fin for Oustanding Acheivement in Writing Original New Media (an award online originals) and Jon Haller received the Oustanding Achievement in Writing Derivative New Media (an award for the online companions to preexisting television shows). The WGA just recently announced the individuals and shows with the potential to follow in the aforementioned winners' footsteps. The nominees in the new media category for the 64th annual WGA Awards...

On this week's episode of Then We Got Help we meet Emily's husband Michael! Since he won't come to Group, Emily begins secretly taping Michael (played beautifully by Darren Legallo) at home.
Also this week, a new couple, played by Eric Anderson (Broadway's "South Pacific") and Daryn Strauss (Downsized and Digital Chick TV), comes to group with a secret.
Creator/star Julie Ann Emery offers this explanation to We Love Soaps TV: "I realize all our Guest Star couples seem to have a secret...I just can't resist the urge to be provocative when I write them. I guess the fact that I was raised on Dallas, General Hospital and One Life To Live (worship the Hillary B. Smith!) has had a lasting influence on my writing."...

Web television aficionados will probably find Downsized to be something of an enigma through the first few episodes, and with good reason. As is the case with other mediums, the most successful of web series tend deal in the currency of escapism, whether they're meme-ripe comedies or eye-dazzling action/adventures. Downsized, on the other hand, has no interest in taking us away from the real world or its concerns. It's instead best described as a series of dramatic vignettes, following three sets of characters throug lean times while providing a clear message: everybody feels the recession, but they do so in their own, personal way. The characters are familiar, not because of their conformity to archetypes or because we've seen them before, but rather because they're so close to real. There's Beth (writer and director Daryn Strauss), the smart, career woman who's brusquely let go from her company; Lowell (Duncan Murdoch...
