In these highly cynical times, it might be hard to process the true-life tale of a young couple’s romance cut short by terminal illness. But the warmth and touching tenderness of “All My Life” melts even the coldest of hearts in its quest to deliver happy and sad tears. Unlike the phony, syrupy, and predictably manipulative devices of a Nicholas Sparks romance (which contains the base similarity that someone dies tragically), this three-hankie weepie holds a surprising amount of heart and hope to accompany all the cathartic crying.
Jenn Carter (Jessica Rothe) is just an average college student, getting her master’s degree in psychology and hanging out with friends Megan (Marielle Scott) and Amanda (Chrissie Fit). But a chance meeting in a sports bar brings about the greatest moment of her life: meeting Solomon “Sol” Chau (Harry Shum Jr.), a digital marketing analyst whose true career passion lies in cooking.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 5 of FX on Hulu’s “A Teacher.”)
A new episode of FX on Hulu limited series “A Teacher” drops Tuesday and if you were wondering where things are headed after high-school teacher Claire (Kate Mara) made the choice to tell her coworker about her sexual relationship with her student, Eric (Nick Robinson), we can tell you — without giving anything away — it’s not going to be pretty.
So why did Claire reveal her big secret to Kathryn (Marielle Scott) on last week’s episode, a move that leads Kathryn to say she must report Claire for the abuse of power? Mara tells TheWrap it’s because Claire was “high” on the fairy tale she had made up about her and Eric.
“I think what [‘A Teacher’ creator Hannah Fidell] and I were going for there was, yes, she has built up this story in her head.

"Nicole's my best friend, too. I'm happy to be here..." Gravitas has released the first official trailer for Our Friend, formerly known as The Friend when it first premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival. Based on a true story, adapted from the article "The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word", the film stars Casey Affleck as a journalist named Matt Teague, and Dakota Johnson as his wife Nicole. Their lives are turned upside down when Nicole is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As Matt's responsibilities as caretaker & parent become overwhelming, the couple's best friend Dane Faucheux, played by Jason Segel, offers to help out. "The impact of this generous, albeit complicated, gesture proves greater and more profound than anyone could have imagined." Also featuring Gwendoline Christie, Cherry Jones, Marielle Scott, and Ahna O'Reilly. This looks magnificent! An inspiring and uplifting story about friendship and unconditional love. Here's the...

The year 2020 is an odd one in which to explore the sexual relationship between a high school English teacher and her 17-year-old male student. If the teacher were a man and the student a girl, a show like “A Teacher” would not happen now. As it is, however, Hannah Fidell’s new series for FX on Hulu is tepid, not explosive. Strong performances from leads Kate Mara and Nick Robinson aren’t enough to propel this middling drama, and what could have been a controversial and deeply disturbing episodic is a safely played affair across 10 installments. At less than 30 minutes a pop, however, it’s addictive as a bag of chips you can’t stop eating because it’s there.
The central problems with “A Teacher” (based on Fidell’s 2013 more powerfully austere film) are quick to reveal themselves. There’s little sexual tension between Claire (Mara), an educator listless in her marriage,...

"Hey, if we get bad news, we should get a dog." Universal Pictures has released another official US trailer for the romantic drama All My Life, from director Marc Meyers. We also featured the UK trailer for this last week. Based on a true story, the film is about a "sweet, fun-loving, newly engaged couple" whose lives change forever when one of them is diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Their wedding plans are thrown off and then change drastically into something else, but their story inspires "an outpouring of generosity and attention from people around the world who want to celebrate the power of love with them." For a significant portion of the The Argument’s running time, there’s a sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop. The set up for the film isn’t particularly strong, and all throughout the first act, it’s hard not to feel like the production is going through the motion. It actually isn’t until the third act that things kick into gear, especially in terms of getting unique and weird. So, as the flick opens today, the question before me is the following: is one really good act enough to warrant a recommendation? It depends on the title in question, but for The Argument, the answer is a low-key yes. The movie is a comedy, focusing on a small group of people and the rather unusual situation they find themselves in. When Jack (Dan Fogler) and Lisa (Emma Bell) disagree in the opening scene, it seems...

"I made a pie!" Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Argument, the latest from actor / musician / director Robert Schwartzman. The Argument follows Jack and his girlfriend, Lisa as they get into an argument during a get together with some friends over wine and charcuterie in their apartment after the final night of a play. As the argument escalates, the party comes to an end and all their friends leave — but the party isn't really over. Jack and Lisa recreate the party over and over again — with all their guests — in order to figure out who was right. Dan Fogler and Emma Bell star, with Maggie Q, Danny Pudi, Cleopatra Coleman, Karan Brar, Marielle Scott, Charlotte McKinney, Tyler James Williams, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Mark Ryder. This is a pretty clever concept for a film, recreating a party just to settle an argument, of course it...

There are so many horror movies released every week – even just in the UK, I’m sure there’s many more released worldwide – it’s a shame that a huge percentage of these wont be seen by as many people as they maybe deserve to be, solely because it might not be top of a long list of films people will see at some point. So I always enjoy watching as many as the smaller indie genre movies as I possibly can and 30 Miles From Nowhere is one of these.
30 Miles From Nowhere doesn’t start with much originality. A group of friends reunite several years after college when one of them commits suicide. They get together...

Penn Badgley is back as Joe in the second season of You, which will be available on Netflix starting December 26th.
You, the Lifetime adaptation of Caroline Kepnes' bestselling book about a young man named Joe who starts stalking and manipulating the woman of his dreams into falling in love with him, has officially moved to Netflix for its second season.
The collaboration from Greg Berlanti and The Magicians' Sera Gamble has already found a broader audience on the streaming service giant. The show is a brilliant subversion of the "Nice Guy" trope with a charismatic cast that included Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, and Shay Mitchell in Season 1.
You Season 2 will pick up following the horrific events of the Season 1 finale, with Joe—seemingly now going by Will—moving to Los Angeles from New York City to terrorize a new city with his machinations.

The year 2017 was a particularly gratifying one in terms of watching a virtual tidal wave of impressive young talent emerge both on screen and behind the cameras. It was also a year in which the major studios finally afforded a good number of talented females plum leading roles. The one constant, however, is that while the major studios became even more obsessed with tentpole franchise films based on comic book characters, it fell to the smaller, more creative independent films to remind us of just how wondrous cinema can still be. Case in point: "Lady Bird", which has received numerous major Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. If you think the movie is the biography of President Lyndon Johnson's wife, known affectionately by one and all as "Lady Bird", you're in for a rude awakening. The film marks the directorial debut of 34 year-old actress/writer Greta Gerwig,...

The Spirit Award- and Oscar-nominated writer-director was joined by “Lady Bird” costume designer April Napier and stars Jordan Rodrigues and Marielle Scott, as well as moderator and fellow filmmaker-actor Jay Duplass, who first worked with Gerwig in 2008’s “Baghead.” Here are some of their insights into the process of bringing “Lady Bird” to life. On preparing to direct her first feature film.“The process of wanting to direct was a long one,” explained Gerwig, who began writing and acting mostly on stage. “I fell in love with movies in college but...

After working under Harris Savides for many years, in the past decade, Sam Levy has emerged to bring a distinct visual style to the face of American independent film. With his collaborations with Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy), Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, While We’re Young, Mistress America), and more, there’s a energetic dexterity and understated beauty to his images that is among the finest of his contemporaries.
His latest work finds him re-teaming with frequent collaborator Greta Gerwig, but this time for her directorial debut, Lady Bird. I spoke with Levy about his part in capturing a film of enormous amiability and vitality, as well as his early days studying under Éric Rohmer, working with Spike Jonze on a secretive Frank Ocean project, and his favorite film of the last year.

Trailer is now below for Greta Gerwig directional debut 'Lady Bird,' starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Lois Smith, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Odeya Rush, Jordan Rodrigues, and Marielle Scott.
In 'Lady Bird,' Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

"You both have such strong personalities." A24 has unveiled the first trailer for actress Greta Gerwig's feature directorial debut, an indie coming-of-age drama titled Lady Bird, being released by the excellent A24. This film actually just premiered at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend to rave reviews, which means it already has some great buzz to go along with this trailer. Saoirse Ronan stars as Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson, a quirky teenager living in Northern California with her eccentric nurse mother. The cast includes Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Lois Smith, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Odeya Rush, Jordan Rodrigues, and Marielle Scott. As seen in this trailer, the film examines "both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter." Looks great! I'm looking forward to seeing it, A24's films are always top quality.

Easily the biggest success story out of Telluride Film Festival this past week was Greta Gerwig’s first solo outing as director, Lady Bird. Following a mother-daughter relationship starring Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan, A24 has now debuted the first trailer.
“Well as I was writing, I really wanted the film to be a kaleidoscope, not a pin hole,” Gerwig tells RogerEbert.com, explaining the main crux of the film. “I think it’s a great tragedy of childhood that you only really appreciate it once it’s done, it’s very hard to feel appreciative of the gifts you have until you’re gone.”
Ahead of a release in November, check out the trailer and poster below for the film also starring Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Lois Smith, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Odeya Rush, Jordan Rodrigues, and Marielle Scott, and return for our review from Toronto International Film Festival.
