The BBC has set its election night coverage for the July 4 poll as broadcasters battle to secure debates with Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer as soon as possible.
Established presenters Laura Kuenssberg and Clive Myrie will helm the BBC’s coverage in six weeks time, replacing Huw Edwards, who resigned from the BBC last month following a scandal involving his allegedly paying a young person for explicit images.
Kuenssberg, who hosts a topical Sunday show, and newsreader Myrie, will “bring insight, experience – and perhaps a little wit” alongside BBC political editor Chris Mason, according to the BBC, whose announcement on the coverage was always expected today.
Others set to feature on the night include Reeta Chakrabarti and Jeremy Vine analyzing results with the famous ‘swingometer’, Kirsty Wark, Fiona Bruce, Victoria Derbyshire, Naga Munchetty, Nick Watt and Alex Forsyth. Nick Robinson and Rachel Burden will be on the radio and Martin Geissler,...

Sky News, a division of Comcast-owned European media and technology giant Sky, wants its coverage to “set an agenda, not present one,” David Rhodes, executive chairman of the Sky News Group, said in London on Tuesday evening.
Speaking during a Sky News showcase at Somerset House in central London, he talked about the news brand’s approach. The event took place at a time when Sky News is preparing for what it has called “a pivotal year for U.K. and U.S. politics,” given big elections in both countries.
Rhodes also described Sky News’ goals as “challenging the powerful in equal measure, challenging the status quo” and being “an insurgent brand.”
He also promised that “we’ll be investing in our political coverage,” mentioning the weeknight 7-8 p.m. show Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge as an example. “We started the Politics Hub on television, it had been a digital brand.

Sky News Boss John Ryley Steps Down
Sky News Head John Ryley is stepping down next year after almost 20 years at the helm. In a letter to colleagues over the weekend, the UK news vet said he would move on to projects “incompatible with leading a news organisation” and that the plan was always to step down by summer 2023. A new Head of News will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Ryley has overseen huge shifts in the news landscape and major stories during a 17-year tenure, including the 2008 financial crash, Brexit, the election of Donald Trump and Covid-19 pandemic. He thanked a number of people in his letter and paid tribute to “present and past colleagues for your exceptional good work, enterprise, innovation, creativity, and success.” He was in turn thanked for his “extraordinary and enduring contribution to Sky over more than two decades” by Dana Strong, Sky Group Chief Executive,...

Broadcast news channels will be able to air judges’ sentencing remarks from the U.K. Crown Court for the first time from July 28, following a landmark change in the law by the country’s Ministry of Justice.
The move will allow the public to see and hear judges explain the reasoning behind their sentences, and will open up some of the best-known courts across the U.K., including the Central Criminal Court, which is more commonly known as the Old Bailey.
Only the judge will be filmed during any sentencing that is broadcast, in order to protect the privacy of victims, witnesses and jurors. The sentencing at the Old Bailey on July 28 of Ben Oliver, who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his grandfather in south London, is expected to be the first broadcasted case.

British news broadcasters’ long campaign to allow cameras into the country’s Central Criminal Court — known famously as the Old Bailey — has been successful.
Laws are now in place allowing the public to watch or stream judges give and explain verdicts at the Old Bailey, the Ministry of Justice announced today, and the first of these will be tomorrow, where a man is being sentenced for the manslaughter of his grandfather.
However, the new laws do not allow for entire trials to be film, meaning those hoping to see Kevin Spacey’s upcoming sexual assault trial will be denied, in theory bar the verdict.
Only the judge will be filmed during sentencing to protect the privacy of victims, witnesses and jurors.
News providers such as The BBC, Sky News and ITN — which creates news content to ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 — have argued for nearly 20 years for cameras to...

Updated 03:20 Am Pt: The race to replace Boris Johnson has begun in earnest and ITV News and Sky News will now both host debates in the coming days, with the BBC expected to follow suit.
Eleven Conservative candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to be the next UK Prime Minister, following Johnson’s bitter sort-of-resignation last week, but by the time the Sky debate takes place on Monday 18 July that number will likely have been whittled down to around four.
Candidates will need to have enough nominations from fellow MPs later this week in order to get through to the final four and, once down to two, the Conservative membership base will make the final decision, with more debates expected over the summer.
The BBC is shortly expected to unveil its plans while Channel 4 is yet to confirm whether it will host a debate. Last time there was a General Election,...

Sky has set up a board to protect the editorial independence of Sky News following its acquisition by Comcast.
The British pay-tv giant has entered into a “legally binding commitment” with the U.S. cable giant that offers long-term funding for the news broadcaster. It has committed to maintain Sky News funding for at least ten years as well as maintaining Sky’s HQ in Osterley, London and a promise not to acquire a UK newspaper for five years.
This comes after Comcast offered the promises in May 2018 in order to be allowed to acquire the company.
Nigel Baker, CEO of Thomson Foundation, formerly VP of business operations for the Associated Press, a journalist with more than 40 years’ experience, becomes Chairman of the Sky News board, while other members include former head of BBC political programs Sue Inglish, former Channel 4 News journalist Chris Banatvala and Mark Astaire, Chairman of Corporate Broking of Barclays.
