The most affecting movies tend to sneak up on you. In the case of The Florida Project, Sean Baker’s new film has been steadily building buzz since the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Still, when I got to see it back in August, there was no way to predict how much it would blow me away, even with that hype. It’s finally hitting theaters this week and should be an Oscar player later on this year. It also represents yet another top notch selection from A24, who have arguably the best taste in the industry. Once you see this flick, you’ll see what I mean. It’s damn near impossible to forget, though trust me, you won’t want to. Set in a poor section of Florida, right in the shadow of Disney World, we follow six year old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) over the course of one summer. She...

Earlier this week, we got a Trailer for a rather small independent movie that could make a pretty big splash during the awards season. This probably won’t shock you, but it’s also an A24 release. The flick in question is The Florida Project, which has been building some steady buzz since the Cannes Film Festival, especially for Willem Dafoe. Long considered by some to be overdue for a statue, Dafoe has received career best notices for his turn here. If he’s truly as good as advertised, he could help drive this movie right through the precursors. Watch out for this one folks. The film is a look at growing up in poverty. The catch is, it’s seen through the eyes of a rather precocious and innocent six year old girl. Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends, including Jancey (Valeria Cotto), run around the a week to...

In 2015, director Sean Baker showed audiences a little seen world with his low budget indie hit “Tangerine.” Shot on iPhone 5s, the film took audiences to the gritty street corners of Hollywood, California telling the story of one night in the life of transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella. Told with both realism and heart, it made Baker a filmmaker to watch. For his next effort, he switched coasts and went to Miami, where he has found another unique story to tell in “The Florida Project.”
Starring Bria Vinaite, Brooklynn Prince, Willem Dafoe, Valeria Cotto, Christopher Rivera, Caleb Landry Jones, Macon Blair, Karren Karagulian, and Sandy Kane, the drama tells the story of six-year-old Moonee, who lives with her mother Halley in a week to week motel.

Editor’s Note: This review originally ran as part of our coverage of Sfiff, and we repost it now as the film opens today at the Quad Cinemas with a national rollout to follow. It seems like the appetite for widely-loved trans/glam/camp musical/rock operas can take a new one about once every two decades. Rocky Horror Picture Show was released in the late ‘70s, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the end of the 90s (even if it wasn’t made into a film until 2001). With Peaches Does Herself, electroclash musician and performance artist Peaches is gunning for an early next spot. The career retrospective/genesis story of the “electro-artist persona Peaches,” Peaches Does Herself is told with the help of trans porn star Danni Daniels, veteran stripper Sandy Kane, and the Fatherfucker dance troupe. It’s a high-energy, transgressive, genial revue with barely a word of dialogue. As...
